Nation's, a local restaurant chain, has been around for over 40 years. Used to pass by one every workday when I'd pick up baby from the sitters. I knew of their pies - basically, the same stuff you'd find at a Baker's Square or a Marie Callender's restaurant - yet that's not where I'd procure the dessert.
There was a time when our metabolisms were higher and our waistlines were trimmer, when hubby and I used to drive miles to a Baker's Square for our weekly dose of pie, usually banana cream, apple or sometimes peach. Then a Marie Callender's opened and I came to like their low-sugar apple pies. Pie consumption dropped off significantly some time after the first kid came on the scene, not surprisingly coinciding with the fact that we were both a bit...shall we say... rounder.
banana cream goodness
That Nation's restaurant near the sitter's shut down to make way for new track homes. Missed opportunity (life's full of 'em, innit?).
Luckily for this gal, there's a Nation's restaurant in the current city I call home, not 2 miles away nestled in an older ("vintage") shopping center, that I only ventured in a few days ago. How did this come about? It started with a recent luncheon and a Nation's banana cream pie. It was so good! So good, in fact, that somehow the left-overs followed me home.
I dropped by Nation's to check out the joint. It wasn't very pretty inside - it looked very dated, possibly its original decor, a bit '70's' with plastic tables and bolted chairs, earth tones, tiled floors, the open grill behind the front counter, and small. Its facade didn't bother me as I was thinking about which pie I was going to bring home.
Traditional cheesecake. The topping is lemon-flavored. Uber-fantastic
Was ecstatic to learn that they offer a no-sugar apple pie, but then I learn it's made with Sweet 'N Low (saccharin). Hm... I'm not a big fan of artificial sweeteners so I had to go for the traditional version.
Apple! A little sweet but good.
I think I ought to try their giant hamburgers someday as well.
Gotta support local business!
