What luck to have caught it in time.

Was shopping at a clothes store, far, far away from home. Don't get out there too often. Only interested in a handful of stores in that mall in which I care to shop. So, basically, gotta shop carefully cos returns or exchanges would be such the hassle or, at the very least, delayed for months.

Mr. P had finished paying for 6 items for the both of us. As we're j-u-u-st about to step out of the store, I spot a jacket I want him to try on. As he's doing this, I'm twiddling my thumbs as he stares at himself in the mirror, turning this way and that.

I spot the receipt sitting on top of our new purchases in the bag. With nothing better to do, I study it. And then I spot something - we were charged for 7 items instead of 6.

And to think we were about to step out the door and be on our way home. If I hadn't given into my impulse to examine the sales receipt, we would've been thoroughly upset when we discovered our credit card was overcharged $48+tax for something not included in the bag.

Mr. P had handled the transaction at the cashier. He's not as careful a shopper as I happen to be when it comes to having purchases rung up. This comes from his lesser experience and his trusting nature. However, people make mistakes and that's what I try to avoid seeing happening. Even at the grocers, I try to empty my contents onto the conveyer belt as quickly as I can so I can monitor them ringing up each item. Do you do this?

Anyways, just happy to have averted one headache.

Another item of mundanity from Peachey. =)

I have a rough idea of what my bill is suppose to be so that's how I double check.  Good thing you caught this expensive error!  Every little bit in your favor helps!

That would of been quite a hefty extra too!, yeah definitely it pays to be vigilant, I always like to check my receipt before leaving the store.

I mean think about it.  If it was, we wouldn't be buying girls flowers, candy or jewelry or anything like that.  We'd get more useful practical stuff, like a wheel lock for your car.

i used to do this ALL the time in toronto, but now in HK, everyone is in such a rush (esp at the supermarket) that i try my best to look at the cash register as the cashier rings the items in vs looking at the receipt afterward. i agree though, men are less inclined to check!

    glad that you did!

good on you! mr p must be really glad he have you as his wife - heehee.

i usually will look thru the receipts from cothing shops, but not at the supermarket. i will always try to remind myself to make a mental calculation of the things i put into the basket, to aviod unnecessary overspending.

i love my regular grocery run at the supermarket .... sometimes the weekly highlight of my boring mid-life crisised existence .... bugs me to hell, when the cashier charges me normal price for promoted or displayed "special priced" or "discount" items .... point of principle, right?

It just happened to me.  My cousin and I walked the trail, 6 miles, and she's always on me about how beat up my sneakers are so we went to Dick's Sporting goods.  I had a $10 off coupon.  I'm a hard fit, particularly with my orthotics, and a really terrible shopper, but as she rang me up my cousin said, no that's too much, those were on sale, $10 less.  Oh, you're right.  I woulda never caught it.  Thanks Jen!  Yesterday, at Panera's, I caught it that they didn't charge me ENOUGH.  Yeah, that I'm right on.....  I don't how much I've been cheated out of over the years.

Good catch professional shopper. You're like my cousin, no amateur like me.
