About Sowers Action:
FOUNDINGOne day in 1992, upon return from an investigative tour in Mainland China concerning education and education assistance, three Hong Kong youths were deeply moved by what they saw. They realized that the acute shortage of resources could never meet urgent needs for education development in backward regions of China. Feeling certain that they could contribute to the Motherland in this respect, they proceeded to found “Sowers Action.” In the early days of the organization’s founding, Sowers Action’s co-founders solicited donations from friends and families. Having successfully raised several thousand dollars, they hastened back to China to carry out education assistance.CHILDREN ARE OUR HOPE FOR THE FUTUREChildren living in those not-so-far-away mountains were equally innocent and lovable. Despite their vivacity and intelligence, their families were so poor that they did not even have enough to eat and to clothe themselves. As a result, children from families that could not afford schooling often loitered at the doorway of schools, trying to catch a few words from lessons given by teachers. Also, schooling in these impoverished regions was mostly conducted in buildings risking collapse at anytime, and inside crumbling and poor-lit classrooms. It was obvious that improvement was urgently needed. In view of the awful conditions, we could not help being moved by the teachers’ perseverance in striving to provide proper schooling to their knowledge-thirty students. For the sake of going to school, children from certain impoverished mountainous regions had to walk bare-feet for one to two hours to and from school everyday. They endured such hardship because they understood that “to be literate” was their only way out.TURNING THE BURDEN OF A HUGE POPULATION INTO USEFUL HUMAN RESOURCES “Sowers Action” was registered in Hong Kong in 1992 (Tax Exemption No.: 91/3859) as a non-lucrative charity organization having no religious or political affinity. The significance of its name is, while seeds and seedlings that need to be sown and nurtured refer to children, sowers naturally refer to those who sow the seeds and nurture the seedlings by providing them with assistance. Through concrete action, such as financing the re-construction of dangerous school buildings and planning the upgrade of teachers’ quality and ability, the sowers endeavor to help children of China’s impoverished mountainous regions to resume schooling by creating for them a save environment for studying. Following the working guidelines of “On-the-spot investigation, direct assistance and long-term follow-up,” Sowers Action must ascertain that all donations received are put to effective use. Our target is to assist in the development of impoverished localities in China, with the view of enabling the people there to become self-reliant. Our development strategy is “Help people to help themselves,” our slogan is “Education is the cure to poverty.” We believe that China’s progress resides in turning the burden of its huge population into effective intellectual resources. “ALL THE GLORY BELONGS TO OUR VOLUNTEERS”It is you who are open-minded enough to abandon your prejudice so as to seek common ground with others while reserving your opinions to yourself. It is you who are humble enough to put down your ego and regard education assistance as your main concern. It is owing to your consistent support in these 15 long years that Sowers Action has been to continue its work until this day. Thank you, volunteers of Sowers Action! When Sowers Action was presented the winner in the Community/Public Affairs category in the “2006 Leaders of the Year Awards” its representative openly declared that “All the glory belonged to our volunteers.” In the “2006 Leaders of the Year Awards” an event hosted by the Sing Tao News Corporation Limited., a group or an individual whose contribution to Hong Kong had made a difference had been selected from each one of the four categories:(1) industry/commerce/finance(2) social/public welfares(3) education/research and(4) sports/culture/performanceOn 29 March 2007, the award was presented to the winner of each category at Hong Kong Conrad Hotel. It was an important event attended by many of the territory’s well-known and important people. Hong Kong’s Chief Executive Mr. Donald Tsang was the event’s Guest of Honor. This was the first grand and ceremonious event attended by Mr. Tsang after his successful election to a second term of office.Sing Tao News Group, a subsidiary of Sing Tao News Holdings Limited, began hosting the annual “Outstanding Leadership Contest” in 1994. The purpose of the event was to openly commend leaders who had made significant contributions to Hong Kong, their effort in pushing forward Hong Kong’s development and their remarkable achievement in connecting Hong Kong with China and the world.Mr. Chan Tak-lam, Chairman of the Board of Judges of the “2006 Outstanding Leadership Contest, Vice-chairman of Asia cum Chairman of the Intelligence and Finance Research Center of Standard & Chartered Holdings (渣打集團亞洲區副主席兼智經研究中心主席陳德霖), heaped praises on Sowers Action for its contribution to community and public welfare matters. Sowers Action, on the other hand, encouraged the public to take action by actually walking the walk so as to raise money and by visiting China’s mountainous regions in person so as to acquire first hand experience about the place and the issue.
