Family/Comics/DeepSky and MORE!
Sunday, Nov 16, 2008 8:02AM / Standard Entry
AnD Folks,
Toronto has been one awesome trip - it was nice to come back to see my family and celebrate Halloween and my brothers B-Day. Here are some photos from my trip:
The mornings were awesome - especially when my brother's kids were making some Elmo and Cookie Monster waffles!! They were so well made I didn't want to EAT them.
Here is my brother's youngest - his Halloween Costume was awesome haha! He dressed up as a Skeleton - he didn't want to wear a mask and wanted to show off his cute face. :D What a poser huh?
Also visited some good friends since we all haven't seen each other in ages. Awesome place Donald.
Don't you love these white slippers? It was really cold in Toronto.
More pictures of my bro's kids. Super cute.
Here is my big family on my brother's birthday. Man we're getting old huh?
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DUDE!!
Here is my brother and my beautiful mom - Here we are at the airport, time to head back to ASIA!! It was nice to hang out with them but time to work work work!
Capturing some shots for a project we're developing for DeepSky Pictures - snapping for reference purposes. We busted out our NIKONS and spent a few hours going from one location to another. This is where the fun begins.
Planning is so utterly important - when developing a project it's crucial to know every aspect of what you're working on and to be always fully prepped. Fun!!
Here is another great piece of architecture - looks very futuristic indeed.
The SMOG always helps create mood in a shot. Hong Kong is great for that.
After that -- We went to a local film festival - they were showing some films @ Elements Grande Theatre and we watched a really funny film - the budget was only $5,000 HK, yup - it basically cost only $700usd to make this film. Impressive - 4 years to make.
Here is a page from ORIUS - still in development and I'm looking forward to it's international release. More info on this coming soon!
We've been busy working away on a gallery event which will showcase some of my comic book artwork. Mroe info on this soon - Here we are trying to figure out which pieces to showcase.
Here is a close up shot of an original BATMAN cover I did with DC Comics.
Been super busy lately with DeepSky Pictures, upcoming events, developing our feature film project and on a daily basis working on the ORIUS comic book. Work hard, add fuel, work HARDER. Looking forward to November 21st for the HKSPC Event and especially looking forward to traveling more across Asia - super exciting!
PeaCE!!!

Hey Folks,
It has been one thrilling ride with all the different projects that we have been working on and all in different stages. I am very excited to head back to Hong Kong to attend the "HKSPC" Charity even organization where I will be illustrating a "secret" super Hero thanks to our sponsors. Other projects that are currently in production is "ORIUS" where we have been steadily developing and working on with the lovely 2R and not only have we co-created it together -- yes, they are in it!
I am so enjoying Toronto and the weather is phenominal. It hasn't been much of a mini vacation as I've been so busy with all these different projects we've been developing. We are rebuilding PatLeeProductions.com and starting a Gallery site as well - on top of that preparing and planning a physical gallery event in China. However we are definitely excited to announce our new company.
The past 12 months we have been in the works of developing a new home in the entertainment industry -- "DeepSky Pictures", a creative generator that will combine anime, live action and comics together fusing them with a spice of American Entertainment using our combined experiences of over 30 years in the entertainment field. Asia is a wonderful place to develop film projects and with thanks to my new partner Lloyd Chao who has been an incredible Producing partner on all our projects thus far, we plan to bring strong creative ideas to the big screen and to create properties that will entertain it's audience time after time. Together - we have been primarily focusing on this one project that is considered to be the "knight" of all our project and we are very excited that this story and IP has come to us after a long haul on Shzin (which is still in development). so here it is, DeepSky Pictures and as we take a deep breath to bring life to this name we hope to generate some great projects that everyone will enjoy worldwide. So please visit us at http://www.deepskypictures.net/.
Peace be with you all.

Designs for Janet Jackson
Friday, Oct 24, 2008 4:26PM / Standard Entry
Hey Folks,
It's been pretty nuts coming back to Toronto, it's REALLY cold here - but loving every minute. Been crazy busy with work and wish I can share what I'm working on but all confidential sure you understand. ;)
Anywho, One of the first music videos I've Art Directed in the past was with Janet Jackson and Director Joseph Kahn. It was probably the best experience I've had with music video production. Why? You have no idea how little time you have to do it and the amount of work that needs to be rendered.
I wanted to share this with those who are interested in getting in the US market for design with Music Videos. You have to be fast, creative and you have to be willing to work around the clock 20 hours a day until it's complete. Some of my buds in LA just don't get any sleep doing this stuff BUT -- and there is always a but, its all worth it at the end. Usually you have about a week to get all designs completed for pre-production and all of them have to get the green lit. You just don't have time to spend 5 hours on one piece. So yes - being fast is crucial in this business.
Out of about 40 pieces of illustration - about 50% if not more gets turned down. As a designer, you have to be willing to except that not all of your designs will be approved - with the Janet video and with blessing from Joseph, we were able to get most of the designs completed within a 48 time frame. Yup - that's about 40 drawings, colored, conceptualized and drawn. It was nuts. We had a small team but we pulled it through. Here are just a few of the images that we executed:
Here is a top view of the stage. The stage tilts and was fully rendered in 3D animation.
Here is another shot of the stage which we didn't use. However - we decided to keep the background cyber screens which you will see in the music video below.
This is the scene where Janet us driving in her car with her friends and it's a neo-tokyo type style. Love drawing tech backgrounds.
This was a stage that we never used - but was hella fun to draw.
Here is an outside building you might catch it in the beginning of the video. My old friend James Raiz hooked this one up, he's super fast with architecture and has mad skillz.
Joseph Kahn is a really fun Director to work with - he's a comic book fan @ heart and really digs artwork from a personal level. Joseph's work can be seen with George Micheal, Britney Spears and he also did the "Thong Song", which I thought was cool.
Anyways, here is the final music video if you haven't seen it already. Enjoy -- and keep that pencil moving!!
