  • Have this bloody mary with lunch and keep your job

    Sunday, Nov 16, 2008 9:13PM / Standard Entry / Members only

Sunday mornings are the perfect time for enjoying a spicy bloody mary, hair of the dog as they say. At the same time, enjoying a bloody mary at your desk in the middle of the week would probably get you fired, especially if you work in an office. Well thanks to the Terra chip company, you can now enjoy a bloody mary at your desk and still keep your job! Well, maybe not a real bloody mary but these Bloody Mary Crinkles from Terra taste just like the real thing. They are crunchy, salty, slightly spicy and best of all have amazing bloody mary flavor.

The Terra chip company was founded by two four-star chefs in Manhattan who left their posh kitchen jobs to start a catering business. Looking to create a signature for their business, they looked to the one place where most event guests began their night, the bar. They decided to create an appetizer that their guests could enjoy at the bar, and the original Terra vegetable chips were born. We're not talking potato chips here, if you know the Terra brand, you know they became known for their exotic root vegetables chips made from taro, ruby taro, sweet potato, batata, parsnip, and yuca. The Terra Chips was founded in 1990 and the rest, as they say, is history. Check out the Terra Chips web site for more information on this great chip company and go out and buy yourself a bag of the Bloody Mary chips, you won't be disappointed!

  • The Big Cheese

    Wednesday, Nov 5, 2008 9:23AM / Standard Entry / Members only

I had originally thought to name this post "Cheese that will make your Ground Shake", but since tonight is the culmination of the most important Presidential election of my lifetime, I thought "The Big Cheese" was much more fitting.

So as I anxiously flip back and forth between CNN and NBC coverage of the election watching states turn blue [and red] I want to quickly share a new favorite cheese of mine; a cheese that is certainly better suited for a strong economy thanks to it's hefty $25.99/lb price tag. This cheese I speak of comes from the Cypress Grove Chevre company in Arcata, California, most notably known, I think, for it's amazing ripened cheese, Humboldt Fog. Actually, while looking at Cypress Grove's web site, I realized that they are the producers of some of my other favorite cheeses like Purple Haze and Midnight Moon.

This ground shaking cheese that I want to tell you about tonight, though, is called Truffle Tremor! Truffle Tremor is a ripened goat milk cheese laced with black truffle! All I can say about this cheese is WOW! The velvety texture of this ripened cheese with the other worldly flavor of black truffles just makes me so happy! This very flavorful cheese is best served by itself or on a very simple cracker, like the 34° Crispbread, and it pairs nicely with a crisp, dry white wine - Cypress Grove recommends a Pinot Grigio or Albariño.

I highly recommend going out to your local cheese shop and picking up a small piece - or large piece if you have the bank - I bought my Truffle Tremor at my local Whole Foods Market cheese shop. A quarter pound will run you around $6.50 and it's worth every penny!

  • Rudi's Organic Bakery

    Saturday, Oct 25, 2008 9:58PM / Standard Entry / Members only

I'm a big breakfast sandwich guy. I like to make them with eggs, english muffins and cheese, sheep or goat cheese of course! I also use local, organic eggs but that's not the point. My point is that I have found a new, favorite english muffin. I've always been a fan of the Thomas' 100% whole wheat english muffins because there are no refined, enriched flours; however, the ingredients list is still quite long. But I think I found a new favorite/

Nutrionally, Rudi's Organic multigrain english muffin with flax is quite close in values to the Thomas' 100% whole wheat muffin, but in the taste and texture category, Rudi kicks Tom's ass! And more importantly, this organic muffin has fewer questionable ingredients in them which makes me feel better about what I'm eating.

You can find Rudi's Organic mutligrain english muffins yourself at your local Whole Foods or online at http://www.rudisbakery.com - and for the record, I have received nothing from Rudi's to make me want to talk about them; I simply think that these are superior english muffins!

  • More Tacos...at The Cheesecake Factory

    Saturday, Oct 25, 2008 12:30AM / Standard Entry / Members only

I just can't get enough tacos. I've told you about the great tacos at La Verdad in Boston, I told you about Trader Joe's Mini Beef Tacos, I even told you about the fresh fish tacos I made at home last month, inspired in part by the great fish tacos at Acapulco's Restaurant. The other part of my fish taco inspiration came from the great Fresh Fish Tacos at The Cheesecake Factory. I bet you didn't know that The Cheesecake Factory makes amazing fish tacos?!

I think it's safe for me to say that the fish tacos at The Cheesecake Factory are my favorite dish on their menu. I know, that is a very bold statement considering their food is consistently good at all of their locations, and their enormous menu is full of great dishes.

The last few times I've gone to The Cheesecake Factory I've ordered the fresh fish tacos, and I roll out of the restaurant stuffed to the gills! The plate is loaded with three big tacos, tasty rice, black beans, guacamole, and a spicy citrus salsa. The tacos are made of two soft corn tortillas each, loaded with fresh grilled white fish (it might be cod, I didn't ask,) shredded cabbage, cilantro, and a spicy avocado cream. Oh man, I can't wait until the next time I go to The Cheesecake Factory so I can get me some fresh fish tacos!

  • Baseball and Tacos, Take 2 - Free Tacos!

    Thursday, Oct 23, 2008 7:10PM / Standard Entry / Members only

Exactly one year ago today, I first posted about Taco Bell's Steal a Base. Steal a Taco. promotion. In the 2007 World Series, Taco Bell ran this promotion promising to give away free tacos for everyone if any player on the Boston Red Sox or the Colorado Rockies stole a base in one of the World Series games. The promotion generated a lot of buzz, even among the players!

On October 26th in game 2 of the World Series, Jacoby Ellsbury of the Boston Red Sox stole second base, winning everyone a free taco! This wasn't the first time Taco Bell tried out a free taco promotion but it was the first time they had to give out free tacos.

So now that we're up to speed, Taco Bell is running the Steal a Base. Steal a Taco. promotion again for this years 2008 World Series between the Tampa Bay Rays and the Philadelphia Phillies. This is a pretty bold move considering the Rays and Phillies were 1st and 4th in total stolen bases for all of Major League Baseball with 142 and 136 stolen bases respectively. Whats more is that Philadelphia lead all of Major League Baseball in Stolen Base Percentage swiping the base 84% of the time a steal was attempted.

Taco Bell had to know they were going to be giving away free tacos, and guess what, they are! In the bottom of the fifth inning of last nights game, the first game of the 2008 World Series, the Rays shortstop Jason Bartlett stole second base winning everyone free tacos!! In fact, there were four stolen bases in last nights game. Philadelphia won the game 3-2 in case you're wondering.

So taco lovers, here are the Taco Bell Steal a Base. Steal a Taco. free taco details:
Run on down to any participating Taco Bell location between
    2pm and 6pm on Tuesday, October 28, 2008
to get one (1) free Crunchy Seasoned Beef Taco.
    Buen apetito!
