Announcement

  • Never in my dreams as a little child did I ever think I would come to live, work and play in Hong Kong. Born in Canada to Chinese parents, I moved here in 1994 and worked as an architect for 4 years before pursuing my greater interest in photography and art. Having published my second book themed and titled 'The Asian Male', I'm set to continue and explore all things that make this Universe as diverse and interesting as it is.

  • My studio is nearly there...

    Wednesday, Jun 18, 2008 9:39PM / Standard Entry

After nearly 2 and a half months of packing, coordinating, moving, unpacking and sweating, my studio in Chai Wan is taking shape to looking pretty good. I think I aged about 5 years in the process, so I gotta hit the gym and spa or something to get myself looking decent again. Moving is hellish, but renovating is fun and exciting. So here we go with some pics of the space...

In time, I'll start planning a sale of my art work and....erm... opening party. Yes, another reason to throw a party. My friends are all asking for a date...but give me some time la. The official name? STUDIO 8. Hope you like it.

  • A studio in it's minimalist state...

    Thursday, Apr 10, 2008 12:21AM / Standard Entry

Here are a few pics of my future studio. Nothing in it now. Bare. Minimal. So cool. I only wish the ceiling was a about a foot higher, but I'll deal with it. My friend Gavin Tu, interior designer, sculpture, and painter, will be helping me out with the design of the space. He always comes up with very creative ideas. Here they are...

  • Bionicle, Yellow Frog, Audiotraffic and Chups Chups.

    Tuesday, Apr 8, 2008 2:08AM / Standard Entry

'Today is a good day'. A student intern once said this to me. Smooth, productive and smiles all around that made me think that I'm so lucky and fortunate to be where I am, right here, right now. Living in the moment on the thread of the unknown.

This morning I was asked to photograph these toys called BIONICLE, Transformer-like creatures for a young boy's birthday party. Manipulating and positioning the robotic figures to look menacing and ferocious was a task and challenge. Looking ridiculously silly and cartoon one moment; frightening and deadly the next. Anyway, I am uploading a few for the sake of how the shoot went.

Subsequent to the shoot, I went to ran off to sign my lease to my new studio. As it turns out, the owner of the building happened to be a photo enthusiast and we had much to share on the advantages and disadvantages of digital. He then pulls out his Leica M6. I drool. I have always wanted to buy one, but the price is exorbitantly high. He's loving every moment of it and then proceeds to talk about the joy of black and white photography the old fashioned way.

Later on, I headed over to Tsim Sha Tsui to meet friends Betty and Robert, the team behind Yellow Frog (a recording studio). Betty and I go way back to our years in architecture school and tonight was her birthday party. Rob made introductions to everyone at the table, but I noticed two guys that looked very familiar. To my surprise, they were Adrian and Don from Audiotraffic. Only days ago, has I surfed into their alivenotdead profile and listened to a few of their tracks. The birthday party was a blast, and Betty got Chup Chups from Adrian and Don.

    A good day.

  • Studio hunting...

    Friday, Apr 4, 2008 3:52AM / Standard Entry

For the past week, I have been looking for a new flat and studio space to live and work in. As it turns out, my landlord wants the flat that I am currently living in back to himself. With rental units increasing as much as 30 - 100% from last year, its been rather difficult finding a suitable place to accommodate my photography and living quarters without paying an arm and leg.

Today, I was happy to locate a studio space not too large or small within my price range. Although I can't live in it, the studio component should work out plenty fine. It's going to take some thought as to how I make the space comfortable, friendly, creative and usable to it's full capacity. I guess this will bring my architect/design side out of me. Subsequent to this, my next plan is to find a place to live, which may take a lot longer than my studio hunting. Sometimes, finding a place that is right is more about fate or luck. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for something that really speaks to me...

  • Photography exhibition of 'The Asian Male' at Shanghai Studio, Shanghai

    Tuesday, Mar 4, 2008 12:55PM / Standard Entry

Here are some photos of the exhibition I recently had in Shanghai Studio, a bar and gallery located in an underground bunker. The gallery space is basically long narrow corridors. No windows anywhere to be found. The turnout was great, with many supporters of both the bar and my photography.

The ominous entrance to the underground Shanghai Studio. Rather dramatic...

First few photos upon entering into the Studio.

Below is me... trying to act cool. Photo of Kris D on the right hand side...gotta love that body!

A photograph of Lien, (the flying man) on the left, as it works it way down the corridor.

A shot down the narrow corridor.

From the end of the corridor, you turn the corner to look back at a photograph of Han. The blue and red lights add a rather dramatic feeling to the entire space.

Here we are into the actual bar area wherein hangs the composite photograph of Lien amidst a lucid green wall.

    Myself and new friend Edward.

Party organizer and socializer extraordinaire Raino and myself.

Myself on the left, Kenneth on the right, owner of Manifesto shop.

    More guests at the party...

    Camilo and me.

Jack, owner of Shanghai Studio on the left, Roland in the centre, me on the right.

All in all the turnout to the exhibition was well received. Thanks to Kenneth, Xavier (whom I didn't get a photo with unfortunately), Jack and Matt for all the effort into getting this exhibition off the ground.
