  • Blood Ties - Review

    Saturday, Oct 3, 2009 2:00PM / Members only

What Doesn’t Kill You, Makes You a Stronger Filmmaker.

You’ve got to admit, anyone who has the courage to partake in the film production business in these times of economic paranoia. ‘Blood Ties’ is a debut film directed by the newest kid on the film block, Chai Yee Wei. While kudos and pats on back give the support, anyone who has made a film will have to be objective and accept the other side of the coin. Only then can all improve.

At first glance, ‘Blood Ties’ the movie reminds the audience of another Singapore film made one year ago, ‘Rule Number One’ from Boku Films and directed by Kelvin Tong. The look of the film and the horror scares are quite the same. Even the titles explaining the ritual return of spirits on the 7th day looks very much the same. One wonders, didn’t Singapore see the same supernatural explanations given in title-block just as well in Jack Neo’s last movie? The movie meanders trying to weave a story with milestones of revelations while keeping the blood-hungry entertained with blood and gore and more blood.viagra anxiety Buy Viagra

  • Earth - Review

    Wednesday, Sep 16, 2009 2:18PM / Members only

You might have missed it, but one notable entry from Singapore made it into the 66th Venice Film Festival earlier this month: the medium length film “Earth” by visual artist/director Ho Tzu Nyen, which premiered on September 5th as part of the Corto Cortissimo section.

Here is a filmmaker who is taking some remarkable flight these past months, having been invited to such prestigious events like Cannes, Pusan this coming October, and Venice as mentioned, one after the other and each time with something different to show. So it should be well worth taking a closer look at the work of one director who with versatility, patience and maturity has not only made his initial mark on the film festival circuit but appears poised to become one more voice from Singapore to be reckoned with.

  • SAMPLIFY Documentary Film Forum

    Monday, Sep 14, 2009 5:12PM / Members only

Moderated by Ms Tan Siok Siok, an acclaimed documentary filmmaker who is currently making the World’s first “twittamentary”, this forum will explore and engage participants in discussing documentary filmmaking and how it relates to the local film scene as well as regionally.Joining her are experienced documentary filmmakers, Mr Craig McTurk whose documentary short, “Street Songs”, received a 1994 Student Academy Award in the documentary category. His other documentary film credits include, Tokyo Blues: Jazz & Blues in Japan, Highway Courtesans, and Satan & Adam. Malcolm Young who has worked for Bang Productions as Executive in Charge of Production in Hong Kong and Singapore, and as such was responsible for the production of many long form documentaries, mostly for Discovery but also for National Geographic and others – those films included bio pics of Joan Chen and Jackie Chan, as well as the award winning ‘Hanging Coffins of China’.

Some questions we will be exploring are, what to shoot and when? When to turn the camera on and and when to turn it off? The editing begins when you decide what to shoot and what to leave out. Is it possible to make a ‘neutral’ documentary? Without prejudice or bias? Should you try? Documentary filmmaking is visual story telling and MUST be entertaining in today’s world - many documentaries are effects heavy these days. What are some ways that a documentary filmmaker can make their films more impactful? Presenter lead? Voice over? Interviews? Animations? CGI? Grab this opportunity to ask the filmmakers these and more.

Tickets are $11.77 including 7% GST
