Chapter One
I could still remember the day I went home to Devon City
which I was away for almost 3 years. The picture was so vivid on my mind. I
woke up as the pilot announces that it’s time for the plane to land. I watched
the scenery outside the plane’s window. I saw the sky was clear and below was
the beach where I enjoyed swimming with my friends every summer. I was coming
home from school for the semester break. At that time I didn’t know that from
then on my life would change.
As the plane came to a stop, I just sat and watched the
other passengers hurrying to get their luggage. I wasn’t in a hurry. I have
more enough time to spend the whole 3 weeks.
I was about to get my bag from the compartment above me when
I bumped to a guy as we accidentally reached above at the same time.
“Ooops…sorry” I apologized without looking who it was. I just take note of the
watch that he wore on his right wrist…OMEGA...” Hmmm…branded” I thought. “Maybe
one of those tourists….” And I just pushed the thought at the back of my mind.
I got my bag, walked the aisle going to the front exit of
the plane. I was one of the passengers who were last to embarked from the
aircraft. The salty air with a taste of seaweeds welcome me as I step down the
stairs. “Yes this is home….” Smilingly I said…
I walked hurriedly avoiding a
group of Japanese tourists outside the arrival area. I spotted our driver standing
meters away from the locals who were also waiting for their relatives and some
were bargaining with tourists. Geronimo as we called him…has been with us for
40 years. He was my grandfather’s driver and now my dad’s. His wife Adela is
also working with us as our cook. Geronimo walked up to me, reached for my bags
and greeted me “Welcome home hija…”
“Thanks…I really miss home”…
Our city is called the Sea Garden City of South. The Medina island is as big as Jeju island of South Korea
and was composed of 2 districts. Tourism commands a large fraction of the
island’s economy. Medina’s temperate climate,
natural scenery, and beaches make it a popular tourist destination for Westerns
and as well as visitors from other parts of East Asia.
Main production of course Coconuts…
I got in at the passenger seat in front of the car and
waited for Geronimo to finish loading my bags at the compartment. I asked him
as he sat down at the driver’s seat, “How’s home?” He smiled and said “All in
chaos…busy preparing for Selina’s wedding.” He chuckled. The girl he was
referring to was my sister. All were excited because this is the first marriage
for our family.
She will be married to Ken Chan, heir to the Real Estate
Magnate in Singapore.
The two met in Paris when Selina studied
Architecture in University
of Paris and Ken earning
his Masters Degree in Business Administration. 2 years ago. Ken was mesmerized
by the Spanish-Filipino beauty. Actually Selina’s my half-sister. My dad
remarried Selina’s mom Anna when I was three years old. My mom died when she
gave birth to me. It was Anna who saved me. I would be dead too if without her.
Anna is a doctor. Now as the director of our family owned hospital, she
influenced me in becoming a doctor myself. After all she is my mother even not biologically.
I am thankful that
Dad didn’t put blame on me when my mom died. My mom sacrificed herself to have
me. She has congenital heart disease but because she loved Dad so much that she
gave him a daughter. My father is a great family man. He loved mom and Anna in different ways. And Anna knows that. He is fair to all his
children. And we love him so much.
We arrived at last. I missed my home very much. I got out of the car and Adela
greeted me by the foyer. She hugged me “kamusta?” (How are you? She said in Filipino. )
“Mabuti.” (Good) I answered and hugged her back. ”Nay, where
are the children ?” Nay is a term for mother in Filipino, I call her that. I was referring to her children, Aimee and Joan. Both are also working for us but only at the winery. We produce lambanog...coconut wine. We are exporting coconut wines to Japan and Korea.
“Outback,
helping Selina preparing the engagement
party.”nodding her head to the direction of the garden
“Ah…Is it today?’ I
said smacking my forehead.
Shaking her head “
you’re too young to be forgetful. Hurry and change your clothes your Dad is
waiting in his study.”
“Ok…Oh Where’s mom?” I asked as we went up the stairs.
“She is in the
kitchen checking the menu for the nth time” Adela said smilingly. “You know
her…wants all to be perfect…”
I laughed. When we reached the 2nd floor landing,
I was greeted by my younger siblings Tony and Larry who were wearing the Barong
Tagalog (formal clothes for men made in Pineapple’s silk)
“Welcome home sis!”
The two seemed to be uncomfortable wearing them…
“Hi…nice clothes…” I said as I tapped Tony’s left shoulder.
I always teased the twins. Both are in their teens and hated formal gatherings
like this.
Tony looked down on his clothes and frowned while Larry
smirked and said” Yah? See yours?”
“Why…?” puzzled “ I
looked at Adela.
She shrugged and said hurriedly “I’m going downstairs…I’ll
help them finish the preparations.”
I looked at the three as they hurriedly went down the
stairs. I walked the hallway to my room. I opened the door and saw the room as
it was before I left for 3 years ago. White and yellow curtains hanged by the window
and sliding door with matching beddings. The room was painted light yellow. I
had it painted when I was sixteen. I have thrown the pinkies when I went to
college. I sighed as I lie down the bed…”It’s good to be home…” I said hugging my pillow.
I heard a knock and Selina’s voice…”Sis?...”
“Yes come in…”I said as I got up the bed…
She ran and hugged me excitedly…”Good to see…I was thinking
you could not come…”
“I cold not miss my sister’s wedding.”
“Come…I’ll show you the dress I made for you” she said as
she dragged me to my walk in closet…
“Oh that’s why you asked for my body stats last week”
“uhuh…and I chose the color light yellow “
“What is it?...would it suit me?” I said teasingly…
“Of course” she assures me…”If not I have here Donna
Mercedes to fix that for you…” she points at the lady designer by the door…Donna
was my schoolmate and one of our closest friend in high school. As one of the
top designer in our place…Now she is venturing abroad especially U.S.
“Hi, Donna…nice to see you! When did you fly in? “
“A month before…flying back in forth for this wedding…” Donna
winked at me…
The dress has a Spanish concept…and it was beautiful…the
front are studded by dark yellow gemstones…
“Oh Selina this is beautiful…” I swirled around I looked at
my reflection on the mirror.
“Thank you…and it fits me…” I kissed her chick…
“Don’t thank me yet…I
have not found a man for you…”
Donna and I both laughed. Selina the matchmaker… We know she
is in love and euphoric that she wants everybody to find love… I’m glad that
Selina found the man to spend her whole life with. I know Ken adores and loves
her. He will take care of Selina for the rest of their lives…
To be continued….
