Our next destination was to White Fish Point. I think I need to get the map out again...

OK, so here's Michigan again. Traverse City, and our hotel, are in that notch just inside "the little finger" (think of the state as a hand and you'll know what I mean). White Fish is in the Upper Peninsula. Road trip!

First a drive along the cost. There's a section of highway we "had" to drive through called the "Tunnel of Trees." Lemme show you why...

When I spotted this sign (above) along our drive, I ready it as this (below)
I thought, "so this is where they grow stuntmen?"

    Anyway...

The blue circle is the connection point between Upper and Lower Michigan. That connection comes in the form of the Mackinac Bridge--which is pronounced "mack-in-awe," it's a Native American word. If you're into bridges, go check out the wiki for it. This be what she looks like:

The Mackinac Bridge also is the dividing line between Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. This side is Lake Huron.

That over there, is Lake Michigan!

Scroll back up to the pink Michigan map at the top. Lake Michigan is on the left side of the hand, it connects to Lake Huron at the bridge and Lake Huron wraps around into the "palm" of the state. Lake Superior, the largest fresh water lake on the planet, is there on top of the Upper Peninsula. The little round lake below Huron is Lake Ontario and the larger at the bottom, that shares borders with Ohio, parts of Canada and New York is Lake Erie. The point where Lake Ontario empties into Lake Erie is known as Niagara Falls

Next stop, LUNCH. Then, White Fish Point....

All the country roads look like this in North Carolina.  I forgot that they don't have so many trees in the Midwest.  I've been away for 28 year, which is a LONG time!  Fall is a good time of year to drive along roads like this.  Very pretty.
