  • Running Away From Home: Gone North Part 2, Irony

On our way Up North, we hit a section of highway that was closed and were forced to take a detour. How ironic is it that a small town called Kalcaska was one of the little burgs we were going to have to pass though. Why is that ironic? First, because this small town holds a lot of memories for Rhett. His family use to own a cabin on a lake in Kalcaska and, many moons ago, they'd spend, all nine--10 when his dad came up for the weekends cuz he had to work--of them would  enjoy several weeks every summer. While we were planning this trip, Rhett had commented that he'd kinda like to go through Kalcaska "if we have time" and see the cabin. Well guess what? Here we were.

Rhett wasn't sure if he'd be able to find the place. Then he saw a landmark that was familiar.
What? People in your state/country don't navigate by giant fish?

After a bit of driving, we found it.

Seeing the cabin brought back a flood of memories. Rhett was regaling me with stories of The Cabin. He remembered stopping at some little bar/diner multiple times on the way home. His fondest memory of the place were the pancakes "as big as the plate!" Good memories...

Soon we were back on the regular highway and getting hungry. I used the Garmin (yes, the same evil Garmin we used on our trip south this past summer) to find a restaurant. I settled on a place and told her to take us there.

The Travelers Motor Bar and Grill.
More irony. Once we got inside, Rhett realized this was the place! The place from his childhood!

Michigan has some kinda weird names for towns. Yep. Bet you didn't no Paradise could be found here. Hell is also located in Michigan. So is Climax.

We also learned Michigan is home to the town where Wily E. Coyote gets all his cool explosives and equipment. Yep, Acme is in Michigan too.

Rhett wanted this to be a special get-away and was even willing to splurge on one of the nicer hotels. But, once we read the reviews of the ones in our price range, we started looking at a couple of the others. Ironically, one of the very reasonably priced places has much better reviews so we went with good ol' Howard Johnson's. Turned out to be a really good decision. Not only was it conveniently located, it was very clean, FREE breakfast, had a comfy king-size bed and a couch hide-a-bed, if we had the wee-people with us, and some other stuff we really liked...
Yay for hotel S.W.A.G.!  And it smell like creamsicles!

    The all important in-room coffeemaker!

    And a heart-shaped hot tub

Also kinda ironic, was the fact that we arrived in Traverse City a lot sooner than Rhett planned. That meant we had to find something to do. Oh look! A downtown shopping area (Rhett was hoping to avoid the shopping... )  So shop we did.

I didn't take many pics while were were shopping but I did sneak this one in a toy store.

Don't buy their stuff...I've seen enough to know that it doesn't work very well, especially if you're next to or in close proximity to a canyon!
