  • Running Away From Home: Gone North Part 1

Last weekend, Rhett and I abandon the wee-people--at my parent's house--and took part in two age old Michigan traditions--going "Up North" and Color Touring.

Up North isn't an exact place. It happens, the further north you go in MI, the more rural it seem to get. Fewer cars, fewer houses, fewer people, fewer gas stations and lots and lots of trees. When you hit that point on a northbound highway in Michigan, you've reached Up North. The people Up North are different too. They're a lot more friendly and laid back.

Color Touring can be done anywhere in Michigan. All you need are trees with leaves (as opposed to needles). With the arrival of fall, the trees change color. Go. Drive. Relax. Enjoy the color. Congratulations, you're Color Touring. It also happens Up North has some of the best places to Color Tour becuz of all the trees without distractions. Bonus!

Lemme help you get your bearings.

This is the United States (obviously).

And this, is Michigan. Yes, it's shaped like a hand. FACTOID: It's common for people in MI to use their hand as a map when showing another person from MI where they're from. Most people don't realize MI has an Upper Peninsula. Yeah, that pink thing above the hand. That's part of MI too!

Our ultimate goal was a resort town called Traverse CIty. That's it right there where the star is on the map below. It took us a couple hours to get Up North...

...but the drive there was beautiful.

Scenery roadtrips I love. I didn't realise how big a state  Michigan was, my geography is shocking.

Ah, yes, Leaf Peeping!  We do it here in NC, too.  We had a dry summer, so our leaves are really colorful this year, a lot of reds and oranges.  But it rains every weekend, so I don't have any pics to share.  I got up this morning, the supposedly "sunny" day of the weekend--it has been raining overnight.

Enjoy your time with your honey and no kids.  You deserve it.

I like road trips for the scenery. Your drive reminds me of the time we drove from Toronto to the eastern cities (Ottawa, Quebec, Montreal) one October. No kids and very relaxing. The night driving and the itty bitty snow flakes kept us alert.

That looks like such a pleasant drive at such a nice time of year.  I love the fall.  Ours is VERY late this year - some trees are just turning - about 3 weeks later.  I like the smell of the forest too.  It is probably technically decay but it still smells like fall.
