Michael Fitzgerald WONG was appointed Pilot (Helicopter) in December 2000 in the Hong Kong Air Cadet Corps (HKACC) with the rank of Specialist Flight Lieutenant (Flying Stream).
Inaugural Programme Founder
Flt Lt Wong is the founder and contributor of Hong Kong's first helicopter air experience programme, "Operation Flying Eagle", for young air cadets aged 11 to 21. The objective of Operation Flying Eagle was to provide 12 outstanding cadets with 20 minutes of flight experience each month in the Robinson R44 helicopter. It was entirely due to Flt Lt Wong's initiative and passion for flying that HKACC was able to have its first regularly organized (bi-monthly) air cadet flight experience programme, flown and funded by Flt Lt Wong himself, so that young people could be inspired to "spread their wings" and to consider future service in the Hong Kong Aviation Industry.
Giving Opportunity
It is all the more a precious opportunity for the HKACC because in spite of Flt Lt Wong's hectic working schedule which require frequent overseas traveling, he managed to return to Hong Kong whenever he is rostered to fly and carried out each scheduled sortie on time. This is a testimony of his reliability and intense love for flying.
Recent Programmes
Operation Flying Eagle is a milestone in the Hong Kong Aviation History and the scheme managed to convince many more private helicopter pilots to provide similar flying experience for young cadets on a volunteer basis. Four years on, HKACC now has one hundred 20-minute sorties each month to take young cadets to the year using the Euro copter EC120B and Robinson R44. History will remember Flt Lt Wong as the person who started it all.
Personal Commendation
For his services to local Aviation Education above and beyond the normal call of duty, Flt Lt Wong was awarded the HKACC Commandant's Commendation in 2002.
