  • Charlie Bit My Finger

    Tuesday, Nov 10, 2009 5:10PM / Members only

I still remember last month in a newstory in Apple Daily about about the YouTube movie "Charlie bit my finger". When I found the movie on YouTube and clicked to play it, I was number 130,277,879 visitor to do so. The theme of the newsstory is what it “tells us about Web.”

Here is some of the flavor:

But here’s the really interesting part: Tens of thousands of people who saw this clip did more than just smile and surf on.

They “mashed” it up with other media (”Charlie Bit Sarah Palin”), created a song about it (”Charlie bit my finger – The Musical”), created their own versions (”Shoshi bit my finger … again!”), posted their own comments, shared it with friends, or otherwise interacted with the original clip like ("Charlie bit my finger Remix")

This is the world of Web. It is the evolution of Web platforms that are supporting millions of simultaneously connected global conversations. And it promotes the idea that a community is more powerful than an individual.

The point of this new media landscape is to create something and share it with the world. When we post anything to the Web, we are begging for a conversation. We want to be ridiculed, called out, accepted, talked about, linked to, and, most important, not ignored.

It’s easy to criticize the rise of participatory social media as a giant waste of time. And it’s true that a fair amount of what’s being created is adolescent.

But that criticism misses the point: This trend is setting the stage for greater long-term engagement. It’s an indicator that people are working to find new ways to collaborate and to be part of something larger than they are individually. The sheer immensity of the participation is the story.

Lehman Brothers Metaphor - "Breaking up is just like when the funds you invested goes bankrupt, you can get nothing from your investment coz the bank/relationship no longer exits."

I was extremely amazed that how similar these two investments are -- investing in a fund and investing in a relationship. When a relationship fails, it's like a bank going bankrupt. You lost all the valuables you gave in and your faith, leaving you a broken heart. Others can only shows sympathy but can't get you out of your misery, not even the government. All kinds of everything reminds you of what the investment seemed to promised to return. Passing by a restaurant you two used to patronized, drinking the cocktail you used to tease other with, looking at the pictures you took...everything used to bring a smile on your face now is haunting you days and nights. The sweet moment you shared popping up in your mind is simply like a stab in your heart.

In monetary investment, you lost your money or your faith to the system. In a relationship, however, you invested much more, your love, your time, your money and of course your heart. That's why the damage of a broken relationship is beyond measurement. And there's no ROI in a relationship.

Another similarity of relationship and investment failure is that people's sympathy fades away. You might be very angry when you first saw the raging victims of Leman Bro protesting on TV but when the news is repeating day after day, your anger or sympathy is becoming milder and milder till the day you simply find the news annoying. Same story for breakups, women are very self conscious about their grieving behavīor.

No matter if it's an investment in a fund/stock/equality or a relationship, when it goes bad, there's no one but You, and only you can pick yourself up and get your life back to track. Salute to all the survivors of the econmoic tsunami and traumatic breakups!

    Love
