  • Making the Kong Christmas-ier??!!!

For the final CFK intro of 2011(and probably for a while), it was pretty much of a no-brainer what to do once the halloween titles were finished.

I started in late november on the christmas titles mainly as by that time the shop's here in the UK are so full of christmas stuff, that its pretty easy to just have a walk around looking for idea's and inspiration.

I pretty much stuck to my original idea of having the guys travelling in the northpole towards a christmas cabin.

With this idea in my head, i started where i have on each of the titles, the background.  I wanted to fill the background with elves doing various activites ie. skiing sledging, snowball fighting.  So i created a backgound solid in AE, then created various elves and placed them in the background.  I then filled in the remaining spaces with christmas tree's and snowmen.
Originally in the background i had animated and added the northern lights.  Although it looked ok, once i had added the snow and video's etc, i removed it as it wasn't that visible anymore.
I then created a list of objects to create in 3D, including the nutcracker and the turkey.
Jona and Michael were actually completed first as a test during making the halloween titles.
The longest time i spent was on the end shot of the house, especially the snowglobe which was abit of a pain to animate at first.
I have to say a huge 'thank you'  to Arne, Joe, Spencer, Jona, Michael.  It's been a real joy to work on CFK stuff over the last few months, cheer's for the opportunity.  Fingers crossed i'm hoping to be thanking you in person this year!!

Also a big 'Happy New Year' to all those who have visited my page here on AND over the year, especially the AND staff for your fantastic support for yet another year.

When i originally began work on the CFK titles, i purposly set them up so they were easy to amend/update if needed.  So if any of the guys wanted something changing or adding, i could implement it with relative ease. ie. during creation of the titles as new episodes came out, it was simply a matter of replacing the old footage with the newer episode via a click of a button.

So over a dull weekend i decided to experiment with changing thing's in the titles on a grander scale to see if this was equally as simple.  As the Uk's been pretty full of halloween stuff since about August i decided to experiment on creating a halloween themed title sequence.

Here's how it looks in the show.

Firstly, i experimented with replacing a random amount of the HK buildings with gravestones, and changing the main colour from blue to red.  I wasn't entirly satisfied with this look, so i then changed the gravestone colour to black, but still it just didn't seem right.

So i decided on the idea of deleting all the buildings and replacing them all with grave stones, however once i did this the background was very very boring.  As it was now only the gravestones appearing on screen now, i came up with the idea of adding a background image that gave the impression that the car was driving through a graveyard.

The uk is awash with halloween stuff, so i went out to the shop's to make note's and get idea's of what to add to the background.  With my list i then decided what i would need to create in AE and in 3D max.

For the tree's they were created in 3Dmax, using this allowed me to create the tree''s without the leaves easily(more importantly quickly).  It allows me to create a large variety for tree's quickly by changing it's seed value, i also added a bend modifier to some of the tree's, for an older spookier look.

To create the background image i started by masking out a random shape to act as the ground.  i then created alot of halloween themed shapes, tree's, skeletons, graves etc. and added them to the comp.  I also used some of the tree's to act as grass and wooded bushes too.
I also wanted to add some animated elements into the background ie. the witch and the bats

For the Bat's i simply draw a very rough bat body shape, then a bats wing shape.  Then using a combination of 3d layers and expressions in AE i was able to simultate a very simple bat animation.
The witch was created in max as a simple extruded spline.  I then added  some low poly foilage and animated it simulate the brush of the broom.
These titles also mark the first appearence of Jona, who i felt guilty about leaving out of the original titles.  I wanted him to be interacting in some way with Michael Chan, i wrote a few idea's down(one of which had Jona as a zombie eating Micheal) but the one that stuck in my mind was having him as a ghostbuster.
To make the background pop-out more, i duplicated it and filled it orange and blurred it out, i also added an orange solid at the top and blurred it out.
i then replaced all the food elements on the road with pumpkins and skulls
Next i wanted to replace the hk taxi, and as they're now driving past a graveyard i decided on replacing it with a funeral car.
With the funeral car added i wanted to then change the begining inside and outside the car.  So i added a skeleton hand to the key, and added a blobmesh modifier and some particle bones to the exhuast, so that it looks like the car spits out blood and guts when it starts.  At this point i also added a masked black solid and fethered its edges to create a vinyet.

For the end, i first kept the original CFK titles ending as the camera zooms from the bottle, and added a skeleton holding onto the bottle, but i wanted to keep the background image of the graveyard, so thought about having the camera pan away from a witches cauldron.
To this new ending i added some 3D gravestones and some pumpkins, bats and the witch, as well as the guys heads in the cauldron.  I kept the skeleton though, but resized him and placed him in the corner.  I then created a simple blobmesh particle system in 3D max, rendered this out and placed it on top to simutate blood dripping downward.
On reflection, i'm pretty pleased with how easy it is to amend the titles, although this dosn't mean i'm gonna keep changing them every episode, it wound't be fair to bombard the guys with minor revisions every week.  So updates will only happen if the guys require one other than that i'll probbaly only update them every 3-5 months.
Although, i do have an idea for one more version before the end of the year????????

  • Making the Kong Crazier!

Hi Guy's, i previously mentioned i'd just finished working on something pretty crazy.
    Well here it is...
Yep, i've been working on the new opening titles for the awesome 'CRAZY FROM KONG', which has featured quite a few AnD artists in it's episodes(Joe, SpencerArne, Micheal, Dan F, Emma)

Actually the titles were a complete accident as i was working on some faux food titles for my showreel, when those titles didn't look right, i replaced alot of the assets with CFK related stuff and built on it from there.

First things first, i set out watching alot of CFK episodes back to back, making notes on certain thing's, ie. the guys reacting to the food or certain reactions of there faces.

Taking these stills of there reactions i created there main credit.

I then did some research looking for HK buildings for the background.

Originally the guys were going to be on the starferry instead of a taxi, however i decided to replace it with a taxi as the water was proving a pain to animate.  If you look hard, the starferry still makes an appearence in the bkg.
With the road now taking the place of the ocean, it gave me chance to add more objects on the road, as a floating burger didn't really look right.

With the taxi in the video, i decided to add a bit at the beginning showing the key and the exhuast.  These two scenes took longer to render themselves than the whole project together.

For the end logo i had to model the text from scratch as i didn't know what font the the guys were using.
The whole project probably took just over 2 weeks to complete, and i was pretty pleased with the end result, so pleased infact that i sent the video to Joe to see what he thought too.

i've gotta say a huge 'Thank you' to Spencer, Arne & Joe for using my video, you guys rock.

  • 1 minute update till it all goes CRAZY!

Hi Everyone, sorry i've been kinda inactive here on AnD for awhile.
I've been really busy trying to put together a new showreel, it's
certainly taken longer to put together than i thought.  I've also
been working on a few other projects at the same time, so it's been
    quite busy.

Last time i wrote on AnD i was talking about my 1 minute film based
around air pollution.  Well the results are in (well the results were in, in April!!).

As it was my first competitive film competion i had entered, i was pretty pleased to place 'runner up'.
    Thanks to everyone who voted.

Also, i've just finished a project which started life as something very different, but then changed into something i can only describe as'CRAZY', but more of that next time.

  • Why i love air pollution! - 1 minute Film

Hi guys, Happy New year 2011 and happy Chinese New Year Too!!!

Etchy reminded me a few weeks ago about the 1 minute film contest, although at first i wasn't sure if i was going to enter, but his message and video got me thinking of idea's.

So after a few days thinking, i came up with an idea, which didn't really work out too good! but it lead to another idea which allowed me to reuse the 3d cel-shading look you may remember from the audiotraffic commercial

Here's some pics with the video after, don't forget to cast you vote!!!
