  • IAM's concert

    Monday, Aug 17, 2009 4:02PM / Standard Entry

Since Last Friday started the so-called Brussels Summer Festival. This will be 10 days of concerts in the center of Brussels.

    Yesterday, evening was IAM's concert.
Most of you probably never heard of them, but it is one of the most well-known rap crew from France (with NTM) and for me the best ever in the history of French hip hop (OK, given the level of French hip hop, especially now it's not that difficult). The group comes from Marseilles.

Their CD "L'école du Micro d'Argent" (the School of the Silver Mic) was just awesome! With lots of solo album, helping other crews from Marseille,... IAM is definitely the French crew from the 90s.
They have worked with people like "Sunz of Man", Method Man & Redman.

Here are some of their stuffs.

    Petit Frere (Little brother)

Their first succes: Je danse le Mia (I'm dancing the Mia)

And probably the best and most underground: Demain, c'est loin (Tomorrow, it's far)

  • This is why I love dance!

    Friday, Jul 24, 2009 5:01PM / Standard Entry

Ok first, a small update. I finally went back to some serious wushu training. I haven't trained that seriously since Shanghai in 2007 and I must admit that it feels good to be back. Now, right now my wushu is just awful so I'm more or less starting all over again. I guess that once the physical condition will be back it will look much better already but I'm far from it at the moment.

    Now to the main subject.

Here are a few videos that just shows why I love dancing. All those videos are from the Street Dance Kemp 2009 in Czech Republic.

Let's start with Yoshie vs Salah
Salah does the show (as always) and Yoshie just feel the music. Awesome!

    Next final, KITE vs Franquey.
Not only do they perform really good but what a real display of fairplay at the end! Sometimes
I've seen battle end with guys fighting (hopefully, not often) but this is what should always happen.

And as it wasn't enough there was an extra round (ending in a draw)

Last final, that's a bit under those two was Hiro Vs Tatsuo

Can't wait to be in Japan and learn from all those guys (only the Japanese ones, of course)

  • Crazy Week-end

    Tuesday, Jul 7, 2009 2:37PM / Standard Entry

    Last week-end was dope!

It was the Sous Pression Dance Battle on Saturday. Sous Pression is probably one of the few big international Hip hop Dance events in Belgium (In Liege, this year). "Sous Pression" means "Under Pressure".

    Categories were as follow:
    Hip Hop
    House Dance
    Popping
    B-boying
    Top rock (b-boying standing steps)

    Judges were:
    Ardit (germany)
    Warry The Warrior (France)
    Pepito (France)
Buddha Stretch (USA, more later on him)

The level was quite high with Belgian but also French, German and Swiss dancers.

One thing was for Sure M.J. was in everyone's mind.
-It began with Bruce Ykanji's son (if I'm not mistaken) doing some M.J. moves in the qualifiers. He got everyone crazy especially when after his round the DJ put some M.J. song for the kid to dance.

-A popper changed his nickname to M.J.

-Bruce Ykanji (France, organizer of Juste Debout and probably one of the best hip hop dancers in the world) and Ibrahim (Belgium) danced under the name. Hihiiii Crew (pronounced HeHeee) as an homage to Michael too

    - A 10 minutes homage M.J. mix with almost everyone dancing on stage (and at least everyone going crazy).

    Results:
Hip Hop: Bruce Ykanji & Ibrahim
    B-boying: Narco & Chucky (Belgium)
    Top Rock: Mathias (France)
Pop: I don't remember but a French guy
House Dance: Mogwai & Filou (France)

All in all an awesome battle with some high level contestants. Only bad side not enough house dancers.

Then Came Sunday. and that was even more awesome!
A 3 hour workshop with none other than Buddha Stretch from Elite Force (NY).
We did about half hip hop and half house dance.

Now for those of you who don't know anything about Stretch (but definitely saw him dance already). He's one of the originators of Hip hop dance and House Dance. dancing since 1984 or 1985 (I believe).
Here's some of his work as Choreographer (and most of the time dancer):

    Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TdOwWrLf628&NR=1

So yes, he choreographed and danced for Michael Jackson (as well as Will Smith, Mariah Carey,...)

The workshop itself was crazy. True old school hip hop with move such as Cabbage patch, ...
House and Hip hop were just crazy. Lot's of basic moves but really challenging choreography (especially house that I totally enjoyed).
Warm-up mostly on M.J. And that's the most surprising including a few wushu stances (I mean with the style and all) just not as low as a wushu guy would do it.

Overview of the basics in this video from a Czech Republic workshop:

  • Move Zone Dance Crew's yearly show (May 3rd 2009)

    Sunday, Jun 7, 2009 4:11PM / Video

Here is the first video of this year's shows.

Unfortunately, they filmed the Sunday afternoon, when most of us weren't doing it at 100% (mostly, because the audience are grand parents who doesn't care about the show but only their grand children). So there was more like a "make mistakes now so you don't make them in the evening" feeling.

That worked, well as the evening show was almost perfect but no videos for that one . So I have to show you the one were I'm totally out of the loop .  (But still the show doesn't look bad)
