Writing/Rewriting

Just got back to London and am welcoming the jetlag stage since I'm always sleep deprived (can't seem to sleep more than 6 hrs these years...) slept a lot yesterday (in my own bed!) and woke up at the wee hours this morning...  I love getting up early cause it's the best time for me to write, so I pulled out my computer and started thinking how to tackle the rewriting of my scrīpt.  And after reading Dax's fabulous blogs, I thought I'd right a bit about writing/rewriting as well.

People often asked me about writi...Read more

What time is it there?

10:43 am GMT... in about 19 hours, I'll be home back in London...

It's sad to think that my HK trip is about to end, as I'm getting ready to board the plane tonight.  I had such a great time, thanks to T, Pat, Stephen, Mark, Boon... and the great people whom I met,  Sam, Angela, Kevan (!!) and Oki.  I'm glad too that I had time to catch up with my old friends, Eva and Irene, thanks to these two who got me to experience my first 12-hr karaoke marathon!  I've come to the conclusion that the theme song for上海灘  ...Read more

I cried this morning...

I wasn't gonna blog until I get to the office this morning, but I had the urge to let out some emotions... just woke up and saw my friend's email, the subject: "you know about edward?"  A vague subject line... so I clicked on it.  My friend, Cyn, she's an efficient emailer, i.e. most of her emails are short and sweet, so all she wrote was, "my uncle told me that Edward died.  Hope you're doing well in HK..."  I immediately knew which Edward she's referring to... the master director and one of my...Read more

Days of being wild... in HK

Can't believe that it's been almost a week since I've been back... it's been crazy, lots of things are happening, running around trying to prep the b-roll shoot this coming weekend, having meetings with people etc... the days that I thought I don't have much to do, they always ended up being really busy...   but of course I also love the time I spend hanging with the AnD boys and friends.   and I met some great people too, like Sam (you rock btw!)

Everything seems uncertain and all over the places, yet...Read more

Audio Traffic Rocks!

Got back to HK a few days ago, and now sitting in the AnD office blogging... it's such a great and warm feeling... like I'm home.

I'm happy to see that Audio Traffic's "Way Too Long" MV is up on their page now, brought back a lot of good memories from the shoot...  When Terence first mentioned to me about making a few MVs for some HK underground bands, he gave me a few songs to listen to before I got to HK.  I felt in love with WTL instantly and was listening to it practically on repeat.  As soon as I h...Read more

Zola and fishbone in my throat

Yet another eventful weekend (this time in an ironic sense)...

Made dinner for family and friends on Friday night, duck with plum sauce + salt baked sea bass, we were having a good time until I swallowed a fishbone... I didn't think it was a big deal, given that it's happened to me before and there were guests around.  So I did what my mom taught me long time ago, I shoved in a fistful of rice and swallowed it without chewing.  Normally, it'd have done the trick, except that this time my throat felt funny....Read more

Thierry Frémaux speaks about Cannes

Cannes turned 60th this year, and Thierry Frémaux, the Festival's Artistic Director, came to the BFI last night and speak about the festival.

A lot of the questions were quite predictable - Is Cannes becoming more commercial, selecting more Hollywood films and less "auteur" films?  Has Cannes been taken over by the paparazzi, starlets and red carpets and lost sight of its core belief?  Frémaux answered succinctly and intelligently.  He said one thing that I can't agree with him more, is that there...Read more

Bird, wine, and south of the border...

A pretty cultural weekend all around.

Went to see Andrew Bird play @ Scala just before the weekend.  It was just sublime!  That man is so talented, it's beyond words.  He was alternating and looping 4-5 instruments (violin, guitar, glockenspiel AND whistling!) for each song, on top of singing.  And the drummer too was playing the drum AND the piano at the same time.  Just insane!  The house was packed, and I ended up in a squating position in order to get the best view, but it was totally worth it.

For folks from / live in the US

Despite our serious global warming problem, the US Congress could vote in the next fews weeks on a bill that would double the greenhouse gas emissions from planes and cars, if a current plan to use "liquid coal" passes.

If interested, you can sign a petition urging Congress to vote no on tax breaks and subsidies on coal:

Voyage in Italy

Been writing like a mad woman... nothing much to report as a writer's life consists of staring at the computer, pacing back and forth in the room, and cursing to high heavens why that scene just doesn't work... BUT, I did take a break and watch another amazing Rossellini film, so I thought to share.

Just watched Voyage in Italy (1953).  Different from his earlier neo-realistic films, this one is more about the psychological and spiritual exploration, about the dissolution of marriage between a conservative couple.
