  • the Big Ask march

    Friday, Aug 24, 2007 3:24PM / Standard Entry

Some of you might already figure out that I'm a little "green" person, always advocating how we could tackle climate change.  Here is another blog about this.   Wanna share with you one of my beloved websites: Friends of the Earth.  They're based in the UK, and they're working hard to make a change to help creating a healthier planet.

They're doing a virtual march, asking people to upload a short video online to petition to the UK government to reduce CO2.  They've already got over 170,000 virtual marchers and it's growing!  They've got some famous marchers as well: my hero Thom Yorke, KT Tunstall, Jude Law etc...

Although it's a petition to pressure the UK government, but you could sign up and join the march from around the world.  And honestly, climate change is a global issue, so we should do our little part to pressure *any* countries to do something about it, not just the one we live in.

So go on, make your little vid and join the march!

    Spread the word, people.

  • 胡楓的年代 The era of Wu Feng

    Tuesday, Aug 21, 2007 6:46PM / Standard Entry

I suddenly had the urge to write a Chinese blog, probably because I just watched an old Cantonese film called "Yi Fan Feng Shun" (Smooth Sailing,) with Wu Feng,  Li Xiang Qing and Zheng Jun Mien.  They're famous Hong Kong actors from the 50s and 60s.  When I was young, my primary school classes were all in the afternoon, so my mornings were always free, I usually just stayed home and watched old black and white films on telly with my grandmother, (there was this telly program called "Cantonese feature films" at 10am daily, and we loved to call it “Cantonese ruined/old films" cause most of them were so old and scratched up.)  Maybe that's why I particularly love Hong Kong films from the 50s and 60s, they reminded me of my late grandmother and my old home.  I still find the actors from that era so charismatic, they processed a kind of charisma and "stardom" that I rarely find in contemporary actors.  My favorite ones are Wu Feng and Zhang Ying Cai (they looked so classy and irresistible in those suits circa. 1950s, and with a fedora too... then forget it!  Now why can't men look like that these days!?)  With modern technology, a lot of these old films are being re-released on DVDs now, and so I got to stock them up every time I go back to HK!

  • Eric Lin

    Monday, Aug 20, 2007 11:11PM / Standard Entry

Just a warm welcome to one of my best friends, aka my brother, aka my partner in crime - Eric Lin - for joining the AnD family.  Can't believe it's been over a decade since we've known each other, I still remember our first rendezvous in the office of Film Arts Foundation, when both of us were still living in San Francisco then.  I received a small grant from FAF to make my very short film (before film school,) I posted a little sign on the little bulletin board, looking for cast / crew help, and Eric answered my post... and that's when and where our friendship and collaboration started.

I love what he wrote in his first blog.  It is exactly like what he said, film-making is a battle, especially independent film-making.  Eric and I fought many battles together, since the very beginning, and along the way during each battle, we bonded and gained a few more family members, a few more super-friends.  The bats are growing in this bat cave.  Us mutants will find and support each other to continue this fight.

He's an amazing cinematographer, a great writer/director and above all, an amazing friend.  And here is my public apology for putting him in *all* the inhumane shooting/fighting conditions, time and time again, one film after another...  (so E, you ready for our next fight? )

So go check out his profile page and give him a big and warm welcome.

A friend of mine just sent this to me and thought I'd like it... and I LOVE it!  I didn't know anything about her.  Love her voice!  And the fact that she's singing her (and my) hometown - SF!!  Maybe some of you already know about her, but if you don't, this is a treat.

And while I'm at it, might as well put on my hero and one of my favorite videos (if you haven't seen this before, make sure you watch until the end, I promise it's a treat):

I love that some guy wrote on YouTube: " holy crap... he just made the ukulele badass"  =)

  • Capitulation (US folks)

    Wednesday, Aug 8, 2007 4:03PM / Standard Entry

The US Democratic-controlled Congress did the unthinkable on Saturday night: They gave President Bush and Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, who is currently mired in scandal and probably committed perjury on this very issue, more unchecked power to wiretap Americans without a warrant.

There is no trade-off between fundamental liberties and security.  Preserving our Constitution is essential to our security—we can't lead on freedom around the world when we're actively undermining the rule of law at home.

If this concerns you a great deal, then sign onto this petition demanding that Congress reverse this capitulation to Bush and the politics of fear.
