  • I'm alive not dead!

    Wednesday, Jun 25, 2008 7:02AM / Members only

Hello everyone! Hope all is well. I am taking a few minutes break away from postproduction to blog to you. For the past few months I had the privilege to work with some of the most amazing people in front and behind the scene. First, I would like to tip my hat off to my mentor, father figure and a friend, Mr. James Hong. Working with him was the best experience ever! My favorite memory is not when we were working but when I was invited to Dreamworks to watch him do voiceover for "Kung Fu Panda". Watching him do his magic was amazing; for someone his age, he has so much energy! He's the one that influence me to do what I do now, work in films. As my expedition continues, I also got the privilege to work with Chil Kong (West 32nd, Crossover) a talented actor and director. Watching him direct was a great learning experience and boy can he sing!!! "The Mikado Project" also includes David McInnis (Typhoon), Yuri Tag (Kaba Modern), and my favorite actress Tamlyn Tomita (Karate Kid 2, The Day After Tomorrow). Tamlyn Tomita is an amazing woman! Not only is she a great actress but a very charming, intelligent, beautiful and humble person. A few time when we were low in craft service, she would stop by the supermarket and bought food for us. Another time she surprised us with a special macaroni and cheese that she had baked for us. It was delicious! But the most amazing thing of all is that Tamlyn always give a great performance. Every time she does her scene, she hits it on the nose. I love her! In between working on these projects, I also got signed to a manager, work on music video where I discover a great band called Elliot Minor, take acting classes, work on a reality show, two TV pilot, host the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival where I ran into Patrick Lee and Terence Yin (Hi guys!), learn how to use a camera crane (jib), was backstage with Megadeth, in the press room at the Daytime Emmy's, now I'm editing for a production company, meanwhile helping my friend spread the word for Project Michelle, promote my fellow Asian musician, involve with the Chinese American Community Night and will start on another film feature soon! Looking forward to that! Wish me luck and I'll let you know when I'm done! Much Luv, Kim Mi Ly

  • Post Holiday Rejuvenation

It's Friday night and I have decided to cancel a party to stay home, relax and blog on AnD. I hope everyone had a great holiday. It was a busy month for me but I made sure to spend X-Mas day with family. Now I have to go back to my calendar to revisit what I've done...               In late November, I went to Dustin Nguyen's house for the Viet Filmmakers gathering. It was my first time at Dustin and Angela's home. It was nice to see old friends (Stephane, Ham Tran, Tim Bui) and make new ones like Tony Bui, director of "Three Seasons". After the gathering some of us decided to lounge at the Roosevelt Hotel where I met more great people like the British in LA (Darren, Beverly and Eileen). They are so fun to hang out with; very uplifting, out-going, energetic and warm. We party till five in the morning! I haven't gone out that late since 1999! ;-) We went to a beautiful mansion in Beverly Hills and ate at Mel's Diner on Sunset till the sun rise. I never felt so young and old at the same time. If you ever come to LA make sure you hang out with the Brits in LA.   November 29th, I was supporting my man Paul Kim doing his comedy stand at the Icehouse. He was the only Asian comedian and was representing! Paul Kim won the audience award for funniest comedian. Yeah! You go PK!               December 1st was the red carpet event at the Imaginasian Theater grand opening. We did lots of interviews and party all night with the some of the best Asian Artists in America like Carrie Ann Inaba from Dancing with the Stars, Michelle Krusiec, John Cho and many more. I took lots of pictures and will post them up shortly.               Early December I did a walk through with Disney on an event that I will be involve with soon (sshh). On that same week I was invited to a green carpet premiere of Blade Runner DVD release. Most of the casts were there plus many more celebrities. I have to say, if you are a big fan of Blade Runner, you should definitely get the digitally enhance DVD final cut. I had the privilege of seeing it on the big screen at Warner Bros. studio couple months prior and it is THE BEST one out of three! After the green carpet, we snuck out of the theater, straight into the limo and went to the after party to fill up our stomach with delicious food and wine. The after party was located at the Bradbury building where they shot Blade Runner. It was decorated just like the movie. I have great pictures to prove it and with Sean Young, Patrick Stuart, Will Sanders, and of course my man James Hong with the mannequins. We had such a great time!               The rest of the week I cancelled some parties, it was all work but I'll skip the boring stuff and go straight into more parties! December 15th I help out my director friend on casting calls. Immediately went to James Hong's house to eat dinner with him and his family. I invited him and his wife, Susan Hong, to join me at a Christmas party thrown by KoreAM Magazine. My friend and host, Paul Kim, was the MC with DJ Shy. But wait... let me rewind a little bit. Before I went to the Christmas party, I had to stop by at Talk of Da Block party to say hi to my friends Grace Su, Carl Choi, FarEast Movement, Tatum Jones and Ken Oak. I couldn't stay long cuz I had to meet up with James.               The Christmas party was fabulous, Paul Kim on the mic, DJ Shy spinning, seeing old friends, Joe Hahn from Linkin Park was there, John Cho, Margaret Cho, Bobby Lee, Leo Nam, Brian Tee, James Kyson Lee, CS Lee, I can go on and on AND of course the free drinks kick it up a notch too! We dance and mingle all night, had so much fun!               For two weeks straight, work, work, work; house sit for a friend and went to James Kyson Lee's birthday party. Christmas day hang out with family, New Years Eve hang out with friends. January 6th, went to an actor friend (Lee Garlington) post holiday party. I went to some press screenings, hang out with my Brits in LA friends, learned photoshop, camera work, editing and supporting the Writer Strike! I have no time for politics yet but hoping to focus on that soon. My best friend's birthday party is tomorrow and I would like to wish Cindy Lam a Happy Birthday.   I hope everyone one have a great and prosperous year. Much love and see you soon!   Kim Mi Ly
  • What have I been upto these past few weeks?

Hello, last time I mentioned I was going to explain to you my journey following James Hong at the AFI premiere of "Hollywood Chinese"... Well, it was amazing! The doc. was great! Arthur did a wonderful job and it was nice to see all the legendary Chinese American Artists on the red carpet like Joan Chen, Tsai Chin, Nancy Kwan, Amy Tan. Lisa Lu, Collin Chou, George Cheung and Arthur Dong. I believe I saw Kelly Hu in the audience as well. But the best part was the after party, dancing with James Hong to Saturday Night Fever and seeing all his fans waiting for him to sign autographs. We had late dinner with James and his family plus George Cheung and KW Hong decided to join us too. It was the night to remember! I'll put up pictures later. Nov. 9th was the red carpet for "The Savages" and coming from Orange County to LA on a Friday night was a nightmare! We got there late but I was able to harass Orlando Bloom to wave 'hi' to our camera :-D To my surprise there were a lot of Asian female fans with flowers and signs, not for Orlando but for a newcomer actor Purba Rgyal in "Prince of the Himalayas". I got to interview the young hot star and the director Sherwood Hu as well. That sure made my day! Instead of seeing "The Savages" I decided to watch "Prince of the Himalayas". I was curious on how they can pull off this version of Shakespeare's "Hamlet"? But to my surprise, they did. As an editor myself, the editing was a little bit choppy but overall it was a well-done film. Saturday, I decided not to work and just sit back and enjoy the movies! I saw the documentary "Please Vote for Me" which was recommended to me by my cameraman. Very interested concept about democracy in a third grade classroom set in CHINA! It has great humor, charm and realism. "Margot at the Wedding" was my next film. There was nothing Asian relating to this film but it was conveniently at the right time after my late lunch. If you like character driven films, this is for you! The whole casts were amazing which stars Nicole Kidman, Jack Black and Jennifer Jason Leigh. The last film of the night was "In Search of a Midnight Kiss" and I was not aware that Kathleen Luong (Green Dragon) was in this movie. It is nice to see her on the big screen again. The movie reminded me of my past life all squeeze into one day but without the crazy boyfriend and sex! During the Q&A I saw my Viet posse Tim Bui and Cathy Uyen in the audience they came to support Kathleen. We went to the after party but I only stayed for a little bit. It was time to party at Nancy Kim's birthday party. For those of you who were in Hawaii, Nancy Kim was the cool Festival Coordinator. We had to give our love to Nancy! The rest of the week was work! The fun stuff is only 1% of being an Artists; the rest is work, work, work! I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. Next time I'll tell you my adventure of going to Dustin Nguyen's house with more of the Viet Posse and partying with the Bui brothers (Filmmakers of Three Seasons, Green Dragon and Powder Blue)! Peace!
