How the media can manipulate perspective!!
Wednesday, Jun 10, 2009 12:02PM / Standard Entry
Look at this news header (the left one) below:
'
You read "Supes compared with Nazis" and you got the only three Chinese supervisors on top, and then you click the article http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/06/09/BABD183R7G.DTL and you realize there is not a single sentence in the article mentioning the three persons in the picture, furthermore, the board's resolution they mentioned in the article was passed in 2006, way before the three persons above were elected to be supervisors, plus the one who sponsored the resolution was former supervisor Tom Ammiano. So why did they have to use this pic for this news????? (there are 11 supervisors in total)
I mean, perhaps you can call me sensitive, but when I first read the article, I read the word "nazi" and then saw three Chinese supervisors in the accompanied pic, so what kind of perception do you expect from a reader like me who haven't read the article yet? Or what if someone who don't really spend time to read it but only try to associate the pic with the news header and get an impression of what the news story is about...
I know the media is and always will be very subjective, but they should also carry some social responsibility too...

my storage HD failed and I feel so depressed!
Sunday, May 31, 2009 7:13AM / Standard Entry
Oh shit, I'm really having some bad luck with my computer these few days, i can't believe that one of my storage hd suddenly failed for no freaking reason. what annoyed me most is that this hd contains all of my writing works and pictures I took for work in the last few years, and also quite some of my short film files, and not to mention the porn movies i have been collecting throughout the years (this one just kidding)...
i am really very depressed and I am just hoping to find out if there is any way to recover it! shit...I used to burn my files to DVD or CD for backup, but then people keep saying it is more secure to save your files on a HD, and that's what I got.......
So after the HD failed, I became such a paranoia and was attempting to back up some of my files to another storage HD. and then I tried to plug it to my old computer, and again, I don't freaking know why, it says "new hardware found" and prompted to install it, but it failed saying it couldn't do it and refused to allow access to it. But the ridiculous thing is that it is not the first time I am using that storage HD with that computer, i have been using it constantly and all of a shitty sudden, it prompted to "install" it and didn't allow me to run it... wtf is happening!?

UFO crashed into Tunguska meteor to save Earth, says Russian expert
Friday, May 29, 2009 5:48AM / Standard Entry
Can you believe that? if so, why did a ET have to sacrifice him/herself to save our world?
UFO crashed into Tunguska meteor to save Earth, says Russian expert
London May 28, 2009 1:18:18 PM IST
A Russian scientist claims that a UFO deliberately crashed itself into Tunguska meteor to save Earth from destruction 100 years ago.
Dr Yuri Labvin, president of the Tunguska Spatial Phenomenon Foundation, insists that an alien spacecraft sacrificed itself to prevent the gigantic meteor from crashing into the Earth, above Siberia on June 30,1908.
He said the clash resulted in what is presently known as Tunguska event - a massive blast estimated at 15 megatons that destroyed 80million trees over nearly 100 square miles, however, no one was killed.
Labvin believes that quartz slabs with strange markings found at the site are leftovers of an alien control panel, which fell to the ground after the UFO crashed into the giant rock.
"We don't have any technologies
that can print such kind of drawings on crystals," the Sun quoted Labvin as saying.
"We also found ferrum silicate that cannot be produced anywhere, except in space," he added.
"The Tunguska explosion is one of the world's greatest mysteries," Brit UFO expert Nick Pope, who headed the Ministry of Defence's UFO investigation team from 1991-1994, said.
"Previous theories suggest it was caused by an impact from a comet, a mini black hole or a piece of anti-matter. This new theory is the strangest yet.
"We need an analysis of the quartz slabs to be able to prove this one way or another," he added. (ANI)
Russian Scientist: UFO Crashed Into Meteorite to Save Earth
Wednesday, May 27, 2009
Millions of downed trees ringed the Tunguska site for years after the 1908 explosion.
Did a UFO deliberately crash into a meteor to save Earth 100 years ago? That's what one Russian scientist is claiming.
Dr. Yuri Labvin, president of the Tunguska Spatial Phenomenon Foundation, insists that an alien spacecraft sacrificed itself to prevent a gigantic meteor from slamming into the planet above Siberia on June 30, 1908.
The result was was the Tunguska event, a massive blast estimated at 15 megatons that downed 80 million trees over nearly 100 square miles. Eyewitnesses reported a bright light and a huge shock wave, but the area was so sparsely populated no one was killed.
Most scientists think the blast was caused by a meteorite exploding several miles above the surface. But Labvin thinks quartz slabs with strange markings found at the site are remnants of an alien control panel, which fell to the ground after the UFO slammed into the giant rock.
"We don't have any technologies that can print such kind of drawings on crystals," Labvin told the Macedonian International News Agency. "We also found ferrum silicate that can not be produced anywhere, except in space."

Can you decipher this complaint letter?
Wednesday, May 27, 2009 7:20AM / Standard Entry
Someone sent the below text to me, it is said to be written by a miss hk contestant this year, supposedly a complaint letter to the public... from the paragraph, the writer states that she is a form 7 student....
a form 7 student (that is equivalent to grade 12 or so)!!! can you believe that? hk is always known as an international city, even though most people don't speak english frequently, at least most can read and write simple english... seeing this letter below, it just makes me wonder, what is the root of the problem? the system, the students or the society? i really don't know....
for you guys who don't speak Cantonese, see if you understand what she wrote!
"我是 Lucy, I went to Miss Hong Kong first interview. Wah d judges very not polite and not nice law. Today I see a megazine saying this year's Girls so ugly. Being imprisoned by loneliness
Sunday, May 24, 2009 5:39PM / Standard Entry
There are times that you feel like being imprisoned by loneliness.
That is, when you:
send a msg on msn and no one responds to you;
send an email (that contains a question or begs for a response) and it seems lost or takes ages to receive a reply, and furthermore, the reply doesn't address your question;
make a phone call and all you hear is a recorded message asking you to leave a message, and then you never get a call back;
schedule to meet a person but due to whatever reason, it is postponed to a long time in the future in a galaxy far, far away...
just want to find someone to talk and everyone you want is out of touch.
How often do this kind of thing to happen to make you feel being imprisoned? What if it seems to happen everyday in a month? What if it just happens so frequently that you begin to wonder if you ever exist, or if you existence is worth the attention of anyone?
And you know how I feel now... and i am listening to eason's 浮誇...
p.s. I am not sure if any of you feel some of the banner ads on this site is kinda annoying (definitely not the AnD house ad), like this zonealarm adclick banner, it keeps loading even after i clicked "stop loading the page", and then some annoying popup just appeared saying there are some looping error with the page. And the way it keeps loading also slow down the page quite a bit....

Kenji Lui, born in Hong Kong, is currently based in San Francisco. He first studied films at University of Southern California (USC) and later earned his BA in films from University of California at Berkeley (CAL).
As a big fan of Asian cinema, he started writing movie reviews and later founded Cinespot.com, one of the largest bilingual Asian cinema websites, during the time he was studying at UC Berkeley. His writings can also be seen on various commercial websites and publications.
Kenji is also an independent filmmaker, some of his short films like "Yellow Fish", "Thereafter" and "Dedicated" to… have been screened at various film festivals around the world.
Currently, Kenji just finished directing his latest short film "Evolution", and he is writing a feature length script, a dream project he is hoping to have a chance to direct in the future.
=====Q and A=====
First question people asked when they gotta know my education background: Why did you leave USC and go to Cal?
Ans: Yeah USC was cool, I even met George Lucas in one of my classes, but yeah it also sucks, coz they are all too "Hollywood", also the tuition was dreadful. I didn't want to be in debt for more than 10~20 years after graduation... On the positive side, Cal is not bad, with its very strong independent and experimental spirit... oh yeah and I didn't have to pay a buck... You see that's the dilemma for some very broke college students trying to pursue a career in filmmaking.
If anyone wants to know more about my perspectives on filmmaking, and also on cinema in general, please check out my movie reviews and writing (weekly column) on Cinespot.com. (Most of my recent stuff are in Chinese though...)
Some of the stuff I enjoy: Akira Kurosawa, Yasujiro Ozu, Hayao Miyazaki, Michelangelo Antonioni, Vittorio De Sica, Alfred Hitchcock, Andrei Tarkovsky, George Lucas, Sergei Eisenstein, Kim Ki-duk, Park Chan-wook, Stephen Chow, Johnnie To, Edward Yang, Hou Hsiao Hsien, Jia Zhang-ke...random favorites other than the works of the people above: Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, City Lights, M, Street Angel, Singin' in the Rain, Rear Window, Witness for the Prosecution, Fist of Fury, Private Eyes, Yellow Earth, Christmas in August, Attack the Gas Station, Juliet in Love, Il Mare, Goodbye Dragon Inn
