  • Moli Hua (Jasmine Flower) – A Brief Introduction to the Song
     |  )

While I was selecting songs to remake for this album, the primary thing I had to consider was if I liked the song or not. But apart from this, I had to consider other factors as well, for example; how were we going to rearrange the new melody for the song? Would the song be suitable with the other songs on the album? How many times had it been remade before? And other factors had to be taken into consideration when making the selection. This song Moli Hua (Jasmine Flower) is a well known traditional folk song that has been around for a long time. You can’t actually trace back the origins of this song or how many people have sung it before. So attempting to do a new rendition of the song and to create a new face for this universally appreciated popular piece of work did have a certain degree of difficulty. But in the end, I have to say that I truly admire the producer for recording this song and including it in the album because I really like it a lot, and it was a challenge for me.

The songs that were selected to be remade for this album happen by chance to have a common point. That is the song and lyrics are very simple and clean. Normally, it’s just a few tunes that are repeated throughout the entire song, but it’s because of this repetitiveness that makes these songs classic and very well known, even to today. I particularly like how Ya-dong planned the music. He used some modern musical beats and added many different kinds of harmony and mixes in the music, creating a piece with many different layers and a space for people to enter, allowing the richness of the original music to come through with dimension. Looking at the selection in the entire album, this song took the longest to complete the vocal recordings because I used a lot of time trying to find out which way would be the best way to perform this particular song. When I listened to this song, I suddenly felt a light breeze blow on me and it instantly made me feel “light” as if I were drifting in mid-air. It felt very comfortable and free.

Words from the Producer, Zhang Ya-dong:
Even though this song has been remade many times before, I still wanted to record this song while retaining the enriched Jiangnan flavor. With regards to the music arrangement, I deliberately recorded more voices to harmonize with the song, and I also used a beat with a very modern feel to coordinate with the melody, creating a classic song that is also filled with class and style.

  • The World Outside – Brief Introduction

The magical power of this song is truly very strong. I honestly can’t explain why but I started crying every time recorded the vocals for this song, I just couldn’t control myself……

I remember back in 2004, I was very fortunate and had the opportunity to participate in CCTV’s Spring Festival Celebratory Event. It was such a memorable experience. That evening, I was on the stage with big brother, Chiyi Chin, and together we sang “Waimian De Shijie” (The World Outside). He played the guitar and I whistled in between the music breaks. The feeling I had at the time was very heartwarming; I didn’t feel one bit of that sad, sorrowful feeling that was in the original song. The response from the audience was also very enthusiastic. Even now, I know that there are many friends out there who are searching on the internet for this particular performance, wanting to watch it again and relive that moment!

I listened to this song when I was a student and at the time, I thought the melody was very pleasant to listen to. I was simply attracted to it. And now, many years later, I have the opportunity to record a new rendition of this song and I realize that I have a deeper understanding of it as well. After all the things I’ve experienced over the years, I certainly have a better understanding of the meaning and feelings expressed in the lyrics. So in the rendition, I thought it would be best if I expressed all the feelings and emotions that I’ve accumulated over the years and sing it in the song. I truly believe that this song is also a reflection of stories for many other people.

Just as I finished recording this song, I met up with Xiao Ge (Chiyi Chin’s nickname) in Beijing for dinner. We hadn’t seen each other in many years and being able to catch up together like this was a very rare occasion! And I also thought to myself that I should make good use of this opportunity to let the original singer of this song have a listen to the version I just finished recording, and see if I met the standard! As it turned out, he was very excited about it and told me that it sounded like he was listen to Koji Tamaki (he’s a Japanese singer). He said that that song still had that deep emotional feeling and it still moved people quite easily. Gaining this kind of praise from the original singer was amazing; I could finally put down the rock that was burdening me!

Xiao Ge, I truly feel very honored being able to sing a new rendition of your classic song. I hope that you will like the way I sang this song, and I also hope that I’ll have another chance to sing with you on the same stage again!

Words from the Producer, Zhang Ya-dong:
Producing this song allowed me to become familiar with this song again, and it allowed me to experience the beauty of simplicity. The way I see it is that there is actually no relation between technical skills and the ability to sing a song that can emotionally move someone. Listening to Karen sing this song allowed me to see things in an entirely new way. I was deeply moved by this song!

  • Red - Song Intro
     |  )

    Monday, Nov 2, 2009 11:24PM / Event / Lyrics

When I was young at school I could really be considered an activist. Besides studying, I spent just about all my spare time participating in extracurricular activities. Recalling the life back then, it was really very enriched! Amongst which of course I learnt musical instruments, and guzheng was one of them. Perhaps some friends still remember I once performed the guzheng before, this is the musical instrument that accompanied me during my childhood growing up, and also the instrument that let me learn how to find joy in music. At that time, one of the Chinese music that I had to learn, <Red Flowers Blooming All Over the Mountain> a song that left a very deep impression on me, until today I have the opportunity to make a cover album, this song has also given me some inspirational stimulus. I hope I can apply it to use on some new compositions.

Among the album this is the only completely new composition. Me and producer Zhang Yadong both consider producing an electronic song rich in ethnic colour to be an extremely challenging task. At the same time we also hoped to bring out the notion of a Chinese classic folk song flavour throughout the whole album, therefore I suggested the song <Red Flowers Blooming All Over the Mountain> to the composer and lyricist to look at. This song seeks to create an imposing force that's boundless, no matter if it's in the melody, lyrics or arrangement, together they can express the strong and powerful immense feeling, the elements of the original song are also permeated in the music. Lyricist Francis Lee has his own unique view on "Red", within the lyrics there are only two colours, "red" and "yellow". This symbolizes the colour of our Chinese national characteristic, making this song particularly full of hot-blooded emotion.

    Producer Zhang Yadong said:

This completely new work, seeks to create the feeling of a Chinese mistral wind, extremely rough and wild. Francis Lee's lyrics also grasps the special feeling that people have towards the colour red, vividly bringing the text into play, forming a perfect combination with the song's melody.
