For Day of the Dead in the Philippines do you picnic on the graves of your ancestors? That is apparently a very old indigenous custom in Mexico--the Aztecs were doing it when the Spaniard arrived, and the Maya and some of the other groups that were under Aztec control, but had a much older culture, had the same custom.

Here, in North Carolina, I have seen the sugar sculptures for sale in Latin American craft shops. There is a large Mexican and Central American population in this state (around 12%), most having arrived in the past 10 years, so there are a lot of businesses that cater to this community. We now have Spanish-language television, radio and newspapers, which is all new in the past 5 or 6 years. All of this media made it very easy to learn Spanish. I wish the same could be said of Cantonese. I guess the Internet will be my friend for learning Cantonese.
