  • I SHOT HONG KONG 2009 Short Film Festival Stirs Up Debate about Hong Kong Independent Film Industry

    Monday, Feb 23, 2009 5:15PM / Event / Members only

On the evening of  Wednesday, 11 March at 9p.m., the independent short film festival, I Shot Hong Kong, will host a rare panel discussion at LKF Entertainment’s California, featuring three of Hong Kong film industry’s most respected leaders.

The panel discussion will give filmmakers and the public the opportunity to ask questions about independent filmmaking as they prepare their film submissions for the festival.

This event is part of ISHK's 2009 programme and follows the kick-off of this year's submission period, which began on 24 January 2009. Filmmakers may submit entries in either English or Chinese in the categories of short, music video, animation and documentary. The finalist will be chosen by a panel of industry specialists and be shown during a three-day festival in June 2009.

This panel discussion features Shaw Brothers director of business Lloyd Chao, who is credited for launching the biggest names in Hong Kong to Hollywood stardom, Bey Logan, screenwriter, producer and V.P. of Asian Acquisitions & Co-Productions at the Weinstein Company, and cutting-edge director Antony Szeto of Wushu and Dragon Blade fame.

ISHK founder and discussion moderator, Craig Leeson, hopes this discussion will spark the much-needed public debate around Hong Kong's independent filmmaking resources, which he argues are desperately lacking. "Hong Kong is respected globally for producing some of the biggest talent in film history such as Wong Kar Wai, Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee and Maggie Cheung. Yet there is such a lack of structural support to help inspired local filmmakers launch their careers. That's why we started the festival," says Leeson, who is also the CEO of Ocean Vista Films, the organizer of ISHK.

ISHK2009-submitting filmmakers will have the opportunity to ask the three panelists practical questions about the city's best resources. This event will also serve as a networking opportunity for other talents, including actors, musicians and producers, to collaborate with ISHK2009 filmmakers. Final submissions for ISH2009 must be received by 24 April, 2009.

This panel discussion is open to the public but RSVP is necessary for entry. Contact sandy@oceanvistafilms.com by 4 March 2009.
