  • Olympics vs. South Ossetia

I had written an Olympic entry last night, and was going to blog it with pictures I took tonight at the Bird's Nest and Water Cube. Honestly, I'm having a lot of fun. The facilities are dazzling. But aren't we being distracted by the sparkling fairy dust? There's a war going on, and thousands of civilians are going to die, if not more. I know many of us are hyperventilating from Olympic fever, but shouldn't we have a proper perspective on what's more important and urgent? Yet even my station, thanks to my stories today on China's first gold, buried the Georgian war deep into our newscast. I feel a little guilty. If I had my way, I'd lead with the Caucasus upheaval. I'd tell the world about how absurd this all is.

I understand, but how often can you point to an event which is all about sacrifice, devotion, and individual achievement, in your own backyard?  I know that as a kid the Olympics were important to me, fired in me a can-do attitude.  There's nothing wrong with reporting what's going on in your neighborhood which is important for the whole world.  Your viewers want a break.  They can have war the other 349 days.  You can count on that.

Why do you think the Russians timed the invasion when they did?  They knew the world would be distracted by the Olympics and not give this story the attention it deserves.

It is so sad that the US wasted its moral capital with the invasion of Iraq.  What can we say to Russia about this situation that would have any credibility??  George Bush should be ashamed.  He started this whole damn mess in Iraq, and now Russia is following our rotten lead.  Yet another occasion when I am deeply ashamed to be an American.  How awful to have to stand up to the world for the idiocies of a president I never voted for and have thought was a twit since the first day I heard him speak publicly.

if it makes you feel better, it looks like most western outlets are putting the georgia story ahead of the olympics now that the opening ceremonies are over.    you work for a HK-based channel,  the priorities for chinese people (the importance of the beijing olympics in chinese history, etc) is obviously more olympics focused...  no need to feel guilty.
