Along the Silk road: shooting in Dunhuang Desert and Jiayuguan City

http://http://www.timonwehrli.com/blog/

Our epic journey began with a short drive from Hong Kong to Shenzhen.  We then hopped on a plane from Shenzhen to Xi'an City, where we caught another plane to Jiayuguan City.  Jiayuguan City was our first shooting location, so immediately we scouted out the location and quickly became acquainted with our our new clients, advertising agency team, and extremely helpful local production team, all of whom would extend great friendship, wisdom, and riotous bouts of laughter.  The Next day we drove another five hours into Dunhuang to prepare for our shoot in the Desert.

This album attempts to share a glimpse of what we encountered along the way.  We feel very fortunate to have encountered such great people and places, and look forward to our next adventure.

Andrew Bird Live at Grappas in HK -images by Jesper McIlroy

For all those fans of Andrew Bird, here are some images I had the opportunity to take while he was playing his gig at grappas in Hong Kong.

I stumbled upon the music of Andrew bird about 5 years ago while I was living in South Beach, Miami.  I had been a regular customer at a small independent music venue on Collins Ave, and they have a great music listening area that allows customers to listen to albums as long as they want.  So, that day en route to a meeting I stopped in and randomly picked up a copy of Bird's "Mysterious Production of Eggs."  Well... I ended up 30 minutes late to my meeting because I had to listen through the album s end.

So, I was finally able to catch him live, and it was no dissapointment.....Here are the resulting images of a man caught in the moments of, as Bird described it after the show, "definitely one of the most intimate shows I've had in a long time."

Hoping for lots of great musicians to follow, with the support of the hong kong community.  A special thanks to The People's Party for organizing the event.

Clockenflap Music festival -Hong Kong

The day began early afternoon with a spicy bloody mary and a few drops of rain.  Not a typical Sunday by any means in Hong Kong, not due to the weather or choice of beverage, but the  convergence of locals for a music festival.  Clockenflap.

Here are some photos from the day:

Jay FC AKA Dj Bohdi layin down the sick tracks with his son and protege Tristan!

I have to make some comments about a couple of performances that really made an impression on me.  First, Fink, who is completely new to me, and a very unexpected surprise.  His solo on stage acoustic performance was so engaging and intimate that at times he had to apologize because his content was a bit sad.  But the Lo-Fi resonance of his guitar and voice was, at times heartbreaking, but nonetheless brilliantly crafted -the crowd was seemingly spellbound.  He was a great artist to take us from daylight into the darkness, literally.

Here are some photos from his performance:

Another performance of interest was by a band called Yacht from Portland, Oregon.  They are creating music that is very inventive and theatrical, and it is this theatrical element that makes them so much fun to be a part of during live performances.  They have totally embraced their "theatre kid geekiness" and created incredibly entertaining alter-egos for their music on stage.  A lot of their songs have a driving electronic beat, that gets people dancing, and their proselytizing, at times philosophical, statements and advice about life tip toes across a line of the absurd.  After the show, we had the chance to meet up with them, and they were really quiet and introverted...a very nice couple.

Here are some photos from their performance:

Halloween with the mini diana camera....

Well, I know I'm quite behind on my comments about Halloween night, but without saying much I will let my pictures speak for themselves.  As some of you may know I dressed up as a 60's "erotic" photographer and had an old diana camera with me.  I think most people just assumed I was snapping away with a fake camera, but as you can see, It was indeed real, and captured some eccentric moments.  See if you can spot yourself!

Thanks for a great party Alive not Dead.
