In the fall of 2008, David Rohde traveled to Afghanistan to do some reporting for a book about the region. He and two Afghan colleagues were kidnapped by the Taliban and held for SEVEN MONTHS. No words can describe how amazing this story. It’s something even the most creative writers at “24” could not conceive. The most surprising things I learned from watching this? Young Taliban guards enjoy American war movies (such Windtalkers and Band of Brothers) just as much as we do. It seems they don’t mind watching the stories of US troops and are just as enthralled by the act of war as we are. They watch American documentaries about the war in the Middle East, both for recon and celebration when their leaders are featured. They also love playing US video games like “Delta Force” but of course, they just go around shooting US troops and helicopters down. And they also hate President Obama much more than they ever hated George W. Bush. Do yourself the favor and watch all 5 videos of Mr. Rohde retelling his experience in deadpan fashion. The story of his seven month capture AND escape are riveting.
2008年秋、David Rohdeはその地域についての本の調査の為にアフガニスタンに旅をしました。彼とアフガン人の同僚二人はタリバンに誘拐され、7ヶ月間拘束されました。この話の凄さは言葉では言い表せません。「２４」のライター達さえも考え付かなかったような話です。でも、これを見て一番驚いた事は？若いタリバン兵士達は僕達と同じくらいアメリカの戦争映画（WindtalkersやBand of Brothersなど）を見るのが好きである事。アメリカ軍の物語を見るのはかまわないらしく、僕達のように戦争映画で興奮します。中東の戦争についてのアメリカのドキュメンタリーを偵察する為だけでなく、彼らのリーダーたちがフィーチャーされると喜びながら観ます。彼らは、「Delta Force」のようなアメリカのビデオゲームをするのも大好きだが、もちろん、ゲームではアメリカ軍やヘリを打ちのめします。そして、彼らはジョージ・ブッシュが大嫌いだったように、オバマ大統領のことも同じくらい嫌いです。Rohde氏が平然と彼のストーリーを語る5つのビデオを見ることをお勧めします。彼の7ヶ月間の拘束と脱出のストーリーは鳥肌ものです。

Do you know what is the most profitable retail store in the world, based on dollar per square footage? That’s right, Apple. It’s a great testament to design in general that a store as beautiful and sparse as this can generate so much profit versus the Circuit City / Best Buy big box retailers. Apple continues to outdo itself in store design. Their newest NYC outpost is on the Upper West Side. (1981 Broadway at West 67th Street). Grand opening is this Sat the 14th.

PENFIELD x REED SPACE.

Just in time for the holidaze! We worked with our long-time friends over at Penfield on serving up this buttery winter jacket exclusive for Reed Space. I was inspired by old school military issue MA-1 Jackets..but this offers up the warmth and function that only Penfield can bring. The jacket features leather reinforcement at shoulders and pockets as well as cuffs and pocket openings. The interior collar is a soft herringbone corduroy. The lining is complete safety orange. It’s available now at Reed Space and very select Staple retailers.
年末のホリデーに間に合いました！僕達は長いお付き合いのPenfieldの皆さんと共に、Reed Spaceの為に特別に、このかっこいいウィンタージャケットを作りました。昔の軍用MA-1ジャケットからインスパイアされた．．．けど、これはPenfieldにしか出来ない暖かさと機能性を持ち合わせたものになりました。このジャケットには肩、ポケット、カフス、ポケット口にレザーの補強がされています。内側の襟はやわらかいヘリンボーンコーデュロイ。裏地はセーフティーオレンジ。現在Reed Spaceと厳選されたStapleディーラーにて取り扱い中。

THE EGOS.

A few weeks ago, Bing.com hosted an amazing table tennis tournament at Spin NY. It was dubbed THE EGOS—A collection of NYC’s best creative agencies. How crazy is this?
A) That there are even table tennis tournaments in Manhattan.
B) That a place like Spin NY even exists.
C) That I’ve been asked to play.
The competition was pretty intense. I did OK. I made it past the qualifying rounds and was eliminated in the 1st round of the playoffs. I need more practice!
数週間前、Bing.comはSpin NYですばらしい卓球トーナメントを主催しました。その名も、THE EGOS-ニューヨークのトップクラスのクリエイティブ会社の集結。凄すぎじゃないですか？
A) マンハッタンに卓球トーナメントが行われる事自体。
B) Spin NYみたいな場所が存在する事。
C) 僕が招待された事も。
白熱した大会でした。僕はまあまあの成績。予選を突破しましたが、決勝ラウンドの一回戦で敗退。もっと練習しなくては！

Judah Friedlander from 30 Rock was in attendance and hosting the tournament. If you ever get a chance, you should really check out Spin NY. It’s an amazing facility that combines a bar, lounge and world class table tennis facility.
