STPL WINTER ‘09.

The thermometer is dropping just in time for the STPL Winter 2009 Collection. It’s hitting your local Staple retailer this week. Reed Space will also be carrying everything. CLICK HERE to see the entire collection along with interviews and features from our models who are volunteers at community organizations such as Multiple Sclerosis (MS Society), God’s Love We Deliver and Housing Works. (BTW, all of our shirts are hand made right here in New York City! Which means we should be on this list.)

Dubai is a city that is constantly under construction. I think I heard that more than 50% of the world’s cranes are here in Dubai. The recent economic bubble burst has definitely had its effect on Dubai. I noticed it was quite empty everywhere I went and that actually makes for a pleasant trip for me. There are a lot of Vegas like qualities in Dubai. Afterall, it’s also a city created out of the desert. It’s a big tourist attraction so people who come here are often on a mission to splurge. But because there is so much construction, and the desert winds making it very dusty, it’s best to see the magnitude of Dubai from above…
ドバイは常に工事中の街です。世界のクレーンの50%がドバイにあると聞いた覚えがあります。でも、最近のバブル崩壊はドバイの経済にもかなり影響しています。行った所はどこも空いていて、僕にとっては旅行がしやすかったです。ドバイにはラスベガスの要素がたくさんありました。ここは砂漠から作り上げられた街ですから。観光スポットとしては人気があり、多くの観光客は贅沢にお金を使うために来ています。でも、本当に工事中な場所が多く、砂漠の風がとてもほこりっぽいので、ドバイのすごさは上から見るのが一番．．．

This is a glimpse of The World islands. Each small lump of sand is supposed to represent a different region of the world. And each goes for about $5-15million depending on size. About 60% of The World has been sold yet only ONE person has actually built anything on it. Times are definitely tough.
これはThe Worldの島々。それぞれの砂の塊は世界の別々の地域を表しています。そして、ザイズによってそれぞれ500万ドルから1500万ドルで売られています。The Worldの60%は売却済みですが、実際その島に何か建てた人はたった一人だけ。現在の厳しい経済状況の顕れです。

Witness The Burj Dubai Tower…the tallest building in world. It’s set to open this December. How crazy is this building! Just to give you some scale…those buildings next to it are a good 30-50 stories tall. This looks like something from a video game. このBurj Dubai Tower．．．世界で一番高いビルを見てください。12月にオープン予定です。このビルはヤバイ！分かりやすく言うと．．．隣にあるビルは30階から50階建てです。ビデオゲームに出てくるようなビルです。
Advice if you go: Bring good sunglasses. You’re gonna need ‘em. 行く時のアドバイス：質のいいサングラスを持っていくように。必需品です。

I recently took my first ever trip to the Middle East. It is an amazing and eye opening region. Granted, Dubai is the most progressive city of the entire Middle Eastern region, but even with that, you can notice marked differences between Western ways and Middle Eastern ways. You must go and experience it for yourself. Some highlights to come…
先日、はじめての中東への旅をしました。すばらしく、はっとさせるような土地です。確かに、ドバイは中東全土では一番漸進的な都市ではあるが、それでも、西洋と中東の違いがはっきり見えます。実際に行って体験するべきです。旅のハイライトはこちら．．．
I’m so used to seeing “recreations” of places like this in Disneyworld or Epcot Center…It’s difficult to remember that you are in an actual Arabic country! このような「レクリエーション」の場所はディズニーワールドやエプコットセンターでしか見慣れていないので．．．本当のアラブ諸国にいる感覚がしなかったです！
This is Shelter. An amazing art space and retail store in Dubai. I was pleasantly surprised to see an elevated level of design and art here. In fact, I’ll do a separate post just about the all the amazing art I witnessed.
こちらはShelter。ドバイにあるすばらしいアートスペースと小売店。ここで洗練されたレベルの高いデザインとアートを拝見できた事がうれしい驚きでした。またこれはと別に、僕が見たすばらしいアートをブログアップします。

Words of advice from Josh Silverman, currently, President of Skype.
“…I went to Brown University and majored in public policy. After graduation, I was told that Senator Bill Bradley had an opening on his staff for a foreign policy specialist who was from New Jersey. I was neither, but took the interview anyway and was able to convince his staff to create a job for me.
I worked for him about two years, and what I learned helped me so much in business. In Washington, no matter how complex the issue, you have to boil it down to one page. That’s an invaluable skill for a leader…”I so often hear people DEFEAT themselves before they’re even allowed to be defeated. I always think, “Damn, at least allow yourself the chance to get rejected and fail! Why deprive yourself of this by not even trying?”
My old tennis coach back in the day used to tell me, “Jeff, just get the ball over the net. That’s number one. We’ll work on getting it inside the lines after that. But if you can’t get it over the net, it’s already over.”現在Skypeの社長であるJosh Silvermanからの助言。

昔のテニスコーチは僕によくこう言いました、「ジェフ、ボールがネットを越えるようにすればいいだけ。それが一番大切。その後にラインの内側に入るように努力すればいい。でもネットを越えなければ、それで終わりだ。」
