HAZE EXHIBITION.

The legendary graffiti artist and designer (and also proud to call a friend and colleague), Eric Haze recently launched a new exhibition @ Level 2 Gallery in NYC. “New Abstracts And Icons”. I love the work. It really feels like the evolution of graf. Simplified. Textual. Abstract. And Graphic. You can really feel the movement in the pieces. In the fall of 2008, David Rohde traveled to Afghanistan to do some reporting for a book about the region. He and two Afghan colleagues were kidnapped by the Taliban and held for SEVEN MONTHS. No words can describe how amazing this story. It’s something even the most creative writers at “24” could not conceive. The most surprising things I learned from watching this? Young Taliban guards enjoy American war movies (such Windtalkers and Band of Brothers) just as much as we do. It seems they don’t mind watching the stories of US troops and are just as enthralled by the act of war as we are. They watch American documentaries about the war in the Middle East, both for recon and celebration when their leaders are featured. They also love playing US video games like “Delta Force” but of course, they just go around shooting US troops and helicopters down. And they also hate President Obama much more than they ever hated George W. Bush. Do yourself the favor and watch all 5 videos of Mr. Rohde retelling his experience in deadpan fashion. The story of his seven month capture AND escape are riveting.
2008年秋、David Rohdeはその地域についての本の調査の為にアフガニスタンに旅をしました。彼とアフガン人の同僚二人はタリバンに誘拐され、7ヶ月間拘束されました。この話の凄さは言葉では言い表せません。「２４」のライター達さえも考え付かなかったような話です。でも、これを見て一番驚いた事は？若いタリバン兵士達は僕達と同じくらいアメリカの戦争映画（WindtalkersやBand of Brothersなど）を見るのが好きである事。アメリカ軍の物語を見るのはかまわないらしく、僕達のように戦争映画で興奮します。中東の戦争についてのアメリカのドキュメンタリーを偵察する為だけでなく、彼らのリーダーたちがフィーチャーされると喜びながら観ます。彼らは、「Delta Force」のようなアメリカのビデオゲームをするのも大好きだが、もちろん、ゲームではアメリカ軍やヘリを打ちのめします。そして、彼らはジョージ・ブッシュが大嫌いだったように、オバマ大統領のことも同じくらい嫌いです。Rohde氏が平然と彼のストーリーを語る5つのビデオを見ることをお勧めします。彼の7ヶ月間の拘束と脱出のストーリーは鳥肌ものです。

Do you know what is the most profitable retail store in the world, based on dollar per square footage? That’s right, Apple. It’s a great testament to design in general that a store as beautiful and sparse as this can generate so much profit versus the Circuit City / Best Buy big box retailers. Apple continues to outdo itself in store design. Their newest NYC outpost is on the Upper West Side. (1981 Broadway at West 67th Street). Grand opening is this Sat the 14th.
