  • The 1st Singapore Tattoo Show

    Tuesday, Jan 13, 2009 3:35AM / Standard Entry

The 1st Singapore Tattoo Show is an event that was organised by Tattoos.com.sg and held in Singapore from 09-11 Jan 2009 at the Singapore Expo.

Sunday was the last day of the event, and Quinn and I decided to go check out the Show.

Here's some of the stuff that was going on in Hall 6B of the Singapore Expo that day...

Apparently more than 8,000 people visited this Show, and there were more than 100 booths set up in the hall with exhibitors from all over the world, showcasing the skills and artworks of over 60 tattoo artists under one roof.

Some of the star attractions of the Show included Chris Garver from Miami Ink and Bob Tyrell from Night Gallery... that's Chris on the right, and Bob on the left.

Reverend Ar Jahn Tong from Fo Guang Hang

Needless to say, there was a long queue at Chris Garver's booth, as people queued up to meet the man in person. I decided not to join the queue madness, and instead opted to walk around the hall and see what there was to see... after all, I came because I was curious.

With exhibitors from 25 countries represented at the Show, one could travel all over the world collecting tattoos on one's body, all just by attending one Show...

    Mummy Tattoo (CHN)

And this is one of my favourites of the day...

Among the featured highlights at the Show were traditional Borneo tattoos from Borneo Ink... apparently, the unique point about Borneo tattoos is that they do not fade, but actually get darker over time.

And traditional Thai Sak Yant tattoos from Fo Guang Hang... these tattoos are done by Thai monks and have spiritual significance to them.

As you can see, all these traditional tattoos are done by hand and not by machine.

There was a Tattoo competition with various categories, and the categories that day were Most Realistic, Large Black N Grey, Large Colour, Back Piece, and Tattoo Of The Day.

Quinn took most of the competition pictures, 'cos he was able to see over the crowd... LOL! :-p

These are my favourites... check out that tiger!

And here's a pair of wings that I just adore!

As we were watching the competition, we noticed someone rather familiar-looking among the contestants who was going onstage to compete, and it was kinda weird, 'cos this guy went up onstage with a video camera in his hand... LOL! :-p

Yes, it was Phat Chan from 24 Herbs!!! And he was taking video footage of the judges looking at his tattoo up close, and when he turned around to face the crowd, he was pointing his camera at the crowd, panning over the crowd, when suddenly, he spotted 2 people in the crowd, yelling out at him with hands raised in the air... one of them wearing a pink Alive Not Dead trucker cap... haha! :-)

I must say that Phat created quite a commotion just about everywhere he went in the expo hall that day...

Quinn and I managed to catch up with him during one of his "free moments"...
    24 Herbs, yeah!!

This is a close-up view of the tattoo that Phat had on his calf... this piece of artwork was entered in the "Most Realistic" and "Tattoo Of The Day" categories of the tattoo competition that day...

The artist was his friend from Denixxx Tattoo (Hong Kong)...

So who won?? erm... not sure exactly, 'cos we left halfway through the competition to go explore the various booths in the Hall.

Other than the tattoo competition, there was a photo exhibition.

There were lion dance and dragon dance performances too, but we only managed to catch the dragon dance performance, which took place after the Tattoo competition. It featured a glow-in-the-dark dragon.

Also spotted at the Tattoo Show that day was Jonathan Leong of Singapore Idol fame, and if my eyes did not deceive me, I might have also seen Chris Ho somewhere in the crowd.

Not too shabby for the first ever Tattoo Show of its kind in Singapore, and from what I hear the organisers are planning to have a bigger and better one next year, including more interesting things like rock band performances and a motorbike show.

So did I get a tattoo? erm nope... but I did the next best thing, I got me a T-shirt! :-)

**All the photos in this entry were taken by Jeanette Chin, except where otherwise indicated**

Also, you might want to check out Ivan Chen's blog for more great pictures of the Singapore Tattoo Show - Ivan took more pics than I did, and they are beautifully taken pics too! :-)

**Thanks Ivan, for your permission to link my blog to your blog for all those amazing pics!**

  • Hot Shot... B-ball Superheroes!

    Saturday, Nov 8, 2008 6:59PM / Standard Entry

I got a little distracted as I was doing my Onimal homework... and what's responsible for it?

Well, there's a Taiwanese idol drama that's pretty hot right now... in fact, it's probably the most highly anticipated idol drama of 2008... it's called "Hot Shot", or in Chinese that would be "Lan Qiu Huo" (which literally translates to "Basketball Fire").

I hardly have time to follow these TV shows when they're showing on TV anyways, so I usually watch them on DVD instead. I love watching idol dramas, 'cos they're feel-good shows... they are pretty much bright and happy, or at the very least they give me a sense of hope after I've watched them, whether I'm in tears or not by then.

So what's the hype with this show?? Well, first up, and the most obvious reason for the heat it generates... the 3 male leads in this show are all Taiwanese superstars in their own right...

**Jerry Yan / Yan Cheng Xu (from Taiwanese superband F4, solo artist, model, actor and basketball enthusiast ~ he's No. 12 of the Thunderclap Wolves)

**Show Luo / Luo Zhi Qiang (solo artist, pop idol, actor, variety show host and basketball enthusiast ~ he's No. 1 of the Thunderclap Wolves)

**Wu Chun / Wu Zun (from another Taiwanese superband Fahrenheit, model, actor, gym owner and ex-Brunei National Team basketball player ~ he's one of the members of a top team that plays against the Thunderclap Wolves)

Let's see, it would be like Justin Timberlake, Nick Carter and David Archuleta all in one TV show... well, not really, but you get the idea as to how big these guys are in Asia!

There's a song in the "Hot Shot" soundtrack that caught my attention, and it's one of those songs that plays in your head mercilessly, even when you don't want it to... anyways, here's a clip of the boys and their B-ball team, the Thunderclap Wolves, performing a little boyband-like dance to this song after a victorious match against a rival team...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5B3DQWegCQ

Incidentally, if you look closely at who's the leader of the rival team in this clip, it's none other than AnD Artist Gabriel Lee making a cameo appearance here! (and boy, is he pissed at being defeated by the Wolves... you can bet that he's not gonna let them get away with this!)... and yeah, there's another familiar face in this clip, it's Coco Chiang from "New Police Story", she acts as the coach of the Thunderclap Wolves... quite a cast here, eh? **winks**

Here's a pic of the lovely Coco Chiang...

Right now, I'm listening to the "Hot Shot" soundtrack CD, and I'm loving the songs in it, especially the ones by Nese Ni... OK, here's where I step aside and let the videos do all the talking...

"Superman" by Nese Ni (Ni Zi Gang)... this is the actual music video with Nese in it... it's pretty funny... LOL! :-D

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uyoxn19cC9Q

If you'd like the English translation of the Chinese lyrics to "Superman", then check out this link:

Here's the other song by Nese that I am sooo hooked on right now... this is "Jue Dui Wu Di (U Got Me)" by Nese Ni (Ni Zi Gang)... the literal English translation of the Chinese song title is "Ultimate Team with no enemies" aka they're INVINCIBLE!! This is the video that features scenes from the TV series, so you can see just how hot this show is... the action is pretty crazy, and needless to say, there's some wirework involved here... suspend your belief for a few minutes ~ literally ~ will ya?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PFgJ8llWv3Q

And here's the actual music video for "Jue Dui Wu Di (U Got Me)" that features Nese Ni...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vet8Q3Nfuqs

There's an English version of "Jue Dui Wu Di (U Got Me)" by Nese... the English lyrics are different from the Chinese lyrics, so they are not a translation of each other.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BSBO9c0Yaj0

Here is the English translation of the Chinese version of "Jue Dui Wu Di (U Got Me) .  (Just ignore the English version of the song that is playing there, 'cos the translation is actually for the Chinese version of the song).

Also, since we have some major Asian music superstars acting as the leads in this show (with the 2 main leads being Jerry Yan and Show Luo), they also had to have some of the musical action here... their songs are not in the "Hot Shot" soundtrack CD, so here are some clips from the show, so you can hear what it sounds like...

This is the opening theme song that was sung by Show Luo...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zniYcZUp6Go

And this is the closing theme song that was sung by Jerry Yan...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LmNHT-JbFfg

If you think that "Hot Shot" is all special effects and hype, with not much substance in terms of basketball skills, then check out these 2 behind-the-scenes news clips, where the guys prove that they are not just pretty faces with no real B-ball skills... the first clip features Jerry Yan scoring with one hand, while NOT even facing the basket...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-UGUPEniybU

And the second clip features Jerry Yan and Wu Chun playing B-ball and scoring for real...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZZc5BqjRnU

All the B-ball match scenes were played "live" for the filming of the matches in this show... and in case you're wondering, the people in the crowd at the B-ball match here are actual fans of the stars in this show, so all that screaming and cheering was pretty authentic, as fans even flew in from Korea and Japan to cheer for their favourite celebs.

So now you know why I got distracted...?? Hehe! ;-p

  • Top Doctor in AnD

    Friday, Nov 7, 2008 6:49PM / Standard Entry

Recently, some of us here at AnD have been referring to Andy On as the "Love Doctor"... well, I thought it might be interesting to see what Andy might look like as a doctor... I mean, he seems to enjoy playing the part enough... so in our usual spirit of fun (and thanks to Miss Scarlett's creative magic)...

McDreamy and McSteamy step aside... here's Doctor Andy On!

And of course, any good doctor will need a good nurse to back him up... so feeling rather impressed with Doctor Andy, after he had successfully rescued me from my fainting spell a few days ago (clearly his fault ~ haha!), I decided to volunteer for the job.

Incidentally, I was supposed to have dressed up as a nurse for someone's party in Taiwan... but unfortunately, due to a rather gruelling schedule there, I was unable to make it for the party (*sob sob*)... still, the nurse outfit didn't go to waste, 'cos here's Nurse Jean!

Oh BTW, the fainting spell and the rescue effort seems to have left a rather permanent mark on my arm... and gosh, it looks like... *gasp*

P/S: I have some Onimal homework to catch up with this weekend... oh yeah, and all that stuff on my trip to Taiwan too... yes indeed, life is beautiful! :-)

  • Darth Maul vs Jedis vs Supergirl

    Thursday, Nov 6, 2008 10:54PM / Standard Entry

This video clip is for radwynn... it was made by my director-producer friend David Liu, and it features my Star Wars pals, Faiz as Darth Maul, Azmi and Mike as the Jedis, and Kelly Latimer as Supergirl... the costumes are from Movie Mania, a costuming events company run by another friend of mine... and the fight choreography was done by SEJA, otherwise known as the Subterranean Esplanade Jedi Academy... SEJA has been involved with various public events and corporate events, check out their performance during CosFest 2006 at Downtown East in Singapore... not bad, eh? :-)
