  • 1st Night of the Rivermaya Concerts at DXO Singapore

    Friday, Jun 26, 2009 2:24AM / Standard Entry / Members only

Back in May, Rivermaya was in Singapore to play some shows... they played 2 concerts at DXO at the Esplanade on 22 and 23 May 2009, and I was there both nights to watch them play "live"... and they were such a treat to watch, 'cos they are such a great band to watch "live".

These concerts were made possible with the support of ABS-CBN/The Filipino Channel, Pinoy Village, Smart Saver Travel, and NTUC.

I had bought a ticket to the show on Opening Night, 22 May 2009... it cost me 30 Singapore dollars and it came with a free drink...

I went by myself, 'cos I didn't think anyone else might want to come with me to a Rivermaya concert... of course, I was soon to discover that I was totally wrong to think that.

I didn't take many photos that first night, and the setlist that the band played the first night was different from the second night... the first night, they played more of my favourite songs, which at that time tended to be the ones sung in English... so their setlist included "You'll Be Safe Here", "Nice To", "I Want You", "Balisong", "214", as well as some other songs in tagalog.

At the time, I wasn't all that familiar wiith what these other songs in tagalog were, so I can't really tell you exactly what was played that night, but here is the one song that stood out to me that night... there is a story behind this song and why it stood out to me.

The last time I saw the band, they had asked me if I was going to be at the Marina Bay Countdown Show to watch them play "live" and I said no, because I already had a family thing on that night.

Every year, my cousin holds a New Year's Eve Party at his place, and every year we show up there to welcome in the New Year together, and this year was not going to be any different, so I apologised to the guys, saying I wouldn't be there, and wished them all the best for the show.

When I mentioned that my favourite song was "You'll Be Safe Here", they told me that they would be playing this same song this very evening for the Countdown Show, and although I can't be at the show to watch them playing it "live", when I watch them playing it on TV tonight, I'll know that they were playing it just for me... gosh, I just melted when I heard them tell me that.

So when they played "You'll Be Safe Here" on the opening night of their DXO concerts in Singapore, of course this song stood out to me, because I remembered that they had dedicated it to me during the Marina Bay Countdown Show.

I couldn't help but be moved when I heard them play this song on the opening night of their DXO concerts in Singapore... here's "You'll Be Safe Here"...

    You'll Be Safe Here

    1st verse:
Nobody knows just why we're here
Could it be fate or random circumstance
At the right place, at the right time
    Two roads intertwine

    And if the universe conspired
To meld our lives, to make us fuel and fire
Then know wherever you will be
    So too shall I be

    1st Chorus:
Close your eyes, Dry your tears
    'Cause when nothing seems clear
    You'll be safe here
    From the sheer weight, O
    f your doubts and fears
    Weary heart
    You'll be safe here

    2nd verse:
Remember how we laughed until we cried
At the most stupid things, Like we were so high
But love was all that we were on
    We belong

And though the world would never understand
This unlikely union, and why it still stands
Someday, we will be set free...
    Pray and believe

    2nd Chorus:
    When the light disappears
    And when this world's insincere
    You'll be safe here
    When nobody hears you scream
    I'll scream with you
    You'll be safe here

Save your eyes from your tears
    When everything's unclear
    You'll be safe here

From the sheer weight, Of your doubts and fears
    Wounded heart

    When the light disappears
    And when this world's insincere
    You'll be safe here

    When nobody hears you scream
    I'll scream with you
    You'll be safe here
    In my arms
    Through the long cold night
    Sleep tight
    You'll be safe here

    When no one understands
    I'll believe
    You'll be safe
    You'll be safe
    You'll be safe here

Put your heart in my hands
    You'll be safe here

    -- END --

That night, after the show, I brought home a little souvenir with me...

Thank you to the person who gave it to me, you know who you are... it's a lovely colour too! :-)
