SPECIAL TIMES EDITION BLANKETS U.S. CITIES, PROCLAIMS END TO WAR

Early this morning, commuters across America were delighted to find out that while they were sleeping, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan had come to an end.

If, that is, they happened to read a "special edition" of today's New York Times.

In an elaborate operation six months in the planning, 1.2 million papers were printed at six different presses and driven to prearranged pickup locations, where thousands of volunteers stood ready to pass them out on the street.

Articles in the paper announce dozens of new initiatives including the establishment of national health care, the abolition of corporate lobbying, a maximum wage for C.E.O.s, and, of course, the end of the war.

The paper, an exact replica of The New York Times, includes International, National, New York, and Business sections, as well as editorials, corrections, and a number of advertisements, including a recall notice for all cars that run on gasoline. There is also a timeline describing the gains brought about by eight months of progressive support and pressure, culminating in President Obama's "Yes we REALLY can" speech. (The paper is post-dated July 4, 2009.)

"It's all about how at this point, we need to push harder than ever," said Bertha Suttner, one of the newspaper's writers. "We've got to make sure Obama and all the other Democrats do what we elected them to do. After eight, or maybe twenty-eight years of hell, we need to start imagining heaven."

Not all readers reacted favorably. "The thing I disagree with is how they did it," said Stuart Carlyle, who received a paper in Grand Central Station while commuting to his Wall Street brokerage. "I'm all for freedom of speech, but they should have started their own paper."

  • UK Urban Artists in HK

    Wednesday, Nov 12, 2008 3:11PM / Standard Entry / Members only

Just a reminder that tomorrow night, Schoeni Gallery launches it's new collaboration with UKadapta with an exhibition of works from 5 of the UKs leading urban artists. The boys from UKAdpata and four of the artists are already in HK and just dropped by the studio, so I promised I'd give them another plug...

The exhibition entitled ATTENTION SPAM features artists Cyclops, David Bray, D*Face, Word to Mother and Vesna Parchet and runs Nov 14 to Dec 10.

It's all good stuff and it's good to see it over here. But – press play on broken record – let's not forget that there is plenty of quality home-grown talent right here that could really use this kind of professional support from the galleries, corporates and often fickle punters.

Vernissage (fancy word for launch party) is from 6:30pm – 8:30pm tomorrow night (Thursday) at Schoeni Main Gallery, 21-31 Old Bailey Street, Central, Hong Kong

I just had to share this - one of many "artist" press releases that I receive on a (sadly) daily basis.. Who writes this stuff? Is "art" just one big acedemic club of pseudo-intellectuals patting each other (metaphorically of course) on the back, smugly safe in their own self-absorbed universe where people actually give a fuck? Or maybe I'm just not very clever.

See below entirely unedited (except I changed the artists real name). It's so full of shit that I'm lost for words - they however, clearly have plenty to go around...

    =====

With a distinct predilection for fragile equilibriums, defacings or unnatural postures and movements (particularly as concerns animals), THE ARTIST reconstitutes or invents situations replete with cruelty, which viewers cannot fully grasp through plain responses of compassion or shock.

With their kinship to minimal and hyperrealist art, THE ARTIST's installations, taxidermic objects, naive drawings, and projections deal with physical constraints as in dance, ballet, or animal training.

THE ARTIST's works, whose narrative constructions oscillate between documentary practice and pure invention, confront viewers with their own perceptive faculties and their necessary limitations, such as the obsessive desire to distinguish truth from illusion. In doing so, they create openings toward fiction that come into play at the very moment in which the viewers' perception is hampered by doubt.

While the somewhat embarrassing literalness of the work's presentation thwarts a potentially violent and emotional reaction (whether through shock or banality), no less disquieting doubts as to their veracity become more acute.

This allows viewers to apprehend the distressing notion of anti-tragical beauty, which in THE ARTIST's installations remains without effective resolve. Behind the veil of these uncertainties – which cannot be lifted if the work's meaning is to be preserved –, the elements of our affective construction of reality reveal themselves through a thrilling confrontation without the slightest hint of possible catharsis.

Actually it was the most fun we've had in ages... It started off at FC HQ with me, Mrs FC and the Uptown Rockers getting ready for the big night out (and making the most of Mrs FCs professional makeup skills). Then first stop of the night was the awesome Dead Not Alive bash at AZURE where the whole possee was out in force and then later on to the Africa Bar (via Dragon-i and Yumla) for the mighty Uptown Rockers gig...

Massive shout out to Patrick, Shan, Belvedere and team for an awesome event in a great location - one of the best for a long while. And also to Uptown Rocklers and friends for a messy messy end to a truly unforgettable night.

    TFC getting involved.

Cuter than Jonny Depp by a long way.

    Rockers get ready.

Mrs FC works her magic while a psychopath lurks in the background

Note: there is only one joker in this image.

    Mr and Mrs FC.

    My beautiful wife...

    One more Belvedere please...

My fave outfit of the night (left).

    Surely time I went home?

But the boys were just getting started...

  • If the world could vote...

A friend in the UK sent me this and I thought it was interesting... Apparently set up by a couple of curious guys in Iceland, who wanna know what would happen in the US election if the whole world could vote...

    http://www.iftheworldcouldvote.com

In my (very personal) opinion I think politicians are all a bunch of self-serving crooks and it makes no difference how people vote, they'll simply cheat to get the results they want anyway. Like they did last time.

This website may be the only accurate record of the whole tragic circus. Although cunningly, perhaps it too is part of the big conspiracy...
