  • JCPenney ISA LA 09 ft. Wong Fu Productions & Far East Movement

Lately, I've sort of stayed away from the spotlight and worked in the recording studio with producers and other artists on their projects offering my "beatbox"/producer skills. Prior to that I generated a buzz when I opened for MTV's America's Best Dance Crew (ABDC) season 3 winners Quest Crew for the Movement event in Honolulu.

Since then I've been regarded as Hawaii's premier (top rank) human beatbox in the August 2009 issue of the 808 Scene Zine, and I was voted by Honolulu Weekly readers in their "Best of Honolulu 2009" issue as the "Best Local Musician Deserving of a Wider Audience" (as a human beatbox). Then I filmed a half-hour local TV interview with Shaka Talk that will air through October to November (http://jasontom.com/events has the specific dates and time) on the Olelo 52 channel.

All of that positive momentum inspired me to collect every penny I've earned from my beatboxing (live gigs, recording, merchandise, etc.) in 2009 to fly out to Los Angeles for the JCPenney ISA LA 09 "SOLD-OUT" concert, and I literally became popular in LA overnight. This would be my second ISA concert for 2009, and it sure was worth every penny. The concert featured Wong Fu Productions, Far East Movement, ABDC Quest Crew, David Choi, Kina Grannis, Cassie (surprise appearance), GLP (Gabe Bondoc, Leejay, Passion), Kevjumba, Tom Ngo, Lydia Paek of Quest Crew, the JCPenney contest winner Clara Chung (too bad I didn't get to meet her), and more. I photo-blogged about my LA trip and the ISA LA 09 concert at http://jasontom.com
