  • How To Steal Someone's Identity

Apparently there's another Jason Tobin running around opening bank accounts, taking out credit cards and getting physiotherapy under my name!

I have unknowingly been the victim of identity theft for the last couple of years and I'm currently sorting through the mess.  It only came to my attention earlier this year when a collection agency contacted me about a credit card that I had absolutely no recollection of.  Anyway to say it's been a monumental pain in the ass would be an understatement.

Instead of boring you with the details of my case I'm posting up these insightful and entertaining videos as they illustrate the ease with which one can steal your identity.

What really sucks about this situation is that banks and credit card companies make it so easy for your identity to be stolen by sending out credit applications that fill up your mailbox every day.  Then it's up to you to prove you're innocent.  So much for innocent until proven guilty.

    It really pisses me off..

That sucks. I think the banks should bear responsibility for those mass-mailings for several reasons. But hey, they've got $$$ up the wazoo to fist$$#$% the politicians in DC...

Wow, that's scary! And sorry to hear you had to go through that... =(

I make it a point to shred anything with my name and address on it, all one zillion of those junk mails. Even then, I still worry about other ways that ppl can get info.

Jason.. would it be too much to ask to make this blog available to "Any Member" .. more than fans and friends really should be made aware of this kind of thing.

Totally sucks! My co-worker had his bank account tapped 3 times in 4 months. Our IT group told him it could be his wireless network at home...they told him to wire in when doing bank stuff. Good luck to you.

Unfortunately it's all too easy these days for this to happen.  You should take advantage of getting free credit reports pulled every 6 mos. if you don't already  (www.annualcreditreport.com) . That's a great way to keep tabs on your accounts and find ones that aren't yours.  I found that someone had opened a cell phone in my name the first time I did it.  Now I shred everything.

So sorry for you Jason.  It is an enormous pain in the neck.  Has any of this found its way to your US credit rating?

Great bit of info .. my family doesn't receive mail at the house .. too dangerous where we live (unsecured rural route boxes in front of the homes) all the JUNK mail that comes gets shredded or burned .. have had some of those phony balony prize phone calls .. just tell them "not interested" and hang up.

Am skeptical of that "LifeLock"  thing that's been advertised on TV too .. the one where the guy displays his social security number on the side of a truck .. if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

Hope you don't mind, but I'm going to point out this blog to friends of mine here.
