The Price Of Love?
Monday, Nov 23, 2009 11:57PM / Members only
I came across this amazing story today in the HK tabloids:
http://www.thestandard.com.hk/news_detail.asp?pp_cat=21&art_id=90928&sid=26184474&con_type=1&d_str=20091123&sear_year=2009
There was a bunch of about 18 ladies, (a good proportion from HK and the mainland) who went onto a two day matchmaking event on a yacht in Shenzhen. They were brought in as dating potentials or matches, to match with 15 wealthy 'multimillionaire' batchelors from the mainland. The event was organised and brought together by a dating agency.
According to the reports about 9 couples had been successfully matched so far, one of whom were was a 26 year old girl matching up with a 39 year old man, who apparently looked like Chow Yun Fat and was just as wealthy! The girl apparently had her dreams come true because she wanted to marry a rich man.....
All this makes me think.......what is the price of love?

Adventure Games
Sunday, Nov 22, 2009 2:21AM / Members only
I dunno about you guys, but I have a real big secret love in life that I so far haven't yet divulged on these pages. What is it you wonder? It's the subject of.........adventure games!!!

Recently I came across some games emulators for my PC and Mac, and came across some stuff that really brought back a lot of memories for me when I was a kid.
Ever since I was young, I'd always been a fan of really well-made adventure games. From Police Quest to Maniac Mansion; Zak McKraken to Martian Memorandum; or Monkey Island/Grim Fandango/Zork to Sam & Max/Leisure Suit Larry......I'd been a huge fan of the genre. I started playing when I was about 9, and I'm still playing them so-to-speak. Although in modern days its called an RPG under the name of WOW (World of Warcraft), Final Fantasy, Assassin's Creed or Dragon's Age Origins, its focus remains the same.....its exploration. But where it differs to the modern RPGs is that, there is a lot of descriptive text involved, which gives it a really good storyline.
Before the advent of modern computer games on systems like the Commodore Amiga, Atari ST and PC, I started off on adventure gaming with books. In the mid 80s in Britain, when home computing was just starting and imagination was the game of the day, there was a very famous author by the name of Ian Livingstone who created these really wonderful 'adventure gaming books'.
For example, one of the titles I remembered was called 'The City of Thieves'. Just thinking the title alone really got to me (remember, I was a kid then!). And what these books differed from the normal fiction books you normally read, was that you made decisions as you were reading the book.
What I loved about these books was that the book itself would have different numbered pages, and not all paragraphs were in order. There was a reason for this. It was because as you read the page, at the end of the paragraph, YOU had to make a decision. And depending on your chosen decision, you had to turn to the relevant numbered page (through the roll of a die), and then see what would happen next!

Say for example you were a thief in the 'City of Thieves' book. After the short introduction to your character on the first page, it would describe you were in fact running away from a band of orcs having stolen one of their artefacts say. So at the end of that page, it would say you ran and came towards a corridor. Then it would ask you 'Do you want to go left, or do you want to go right?'. So then you would roll your die. If you wanted to go left, it would have to be a certain low number and you turn to page 15, and if you wanted to go right it would be a 5 or 6 say, and so you turn to page 36. It was so clever and unpredictable that during my younger years I had bought almost the entire collection of those books. It was so much fun! I really loved the series, specially the book about the future worlds where there were robots involved!!
Anyways.....shortly after my book reading adventures, I gravitated onto computers, as the home versions just started to appear then. At the time, text adventures were the hottest things of the day! I started my first text-based adventure when I was about 7 on a BBC B Micro, on a game called Sphinx Adventure. I still remember it. To load the game I had to play tape to the machine! It was so old fashioned! At the time the game was controlled by very basic commands. As you read the page you had to type in stuff like GO NORTH, GO WEST, PICK UP LAMP etc to navigate. While it was tedious, it certainly made life fun, especially after school where my local secondary also had it installed!
Now as you may know, this was way before the Playstation era, so we didn't have good graphics about, especially on the BBC (even though it could move blocky objects). But around 1986, an innovative British company called Magnetic Scrolls brought about probably the first graphic-intensive text based adventures onto the computer market. Beginning with the Amiga and Atari ST, they brought out what I consider to be the most original and most fondly remembered games I'd ever played. I remembered one day in July 1985, a friend of my dad's brought over an Amiga 1000 computer for me to try. This was a huge computer with a PC keyboard, mouse and a 3.5" disk drive. The computer had a 256K memory slot on the front of the case, and was brand spanking new with a rare 16-bit colour screen. It was one of the first units to arrive in the UK at that time, and the reason I knew this was because our friend had just finished reviewing the unit for a UK computer magazine!
Because it was an early machine, I was given only two games at the time. The first I remembered was Marble Madness by EOA (now known as EA or Electronic Arts) which was a hugely addictive game using a mouse (which was really really futuristic then!). And the second was The Pawn by Magnetic Scrolls. This had a musical score on the front (a first for a computer game at that time!) and is considered (I think) one of the most beautifully illustrated games of all time.
This was the box cover of The Pawn:

and this was one of the screenshots I was confronted with! (this version I took from my Mac Magnetic Scrolls emulator).

They had another game called Guild of Thieves. This is one of the screenshots from that game:

Our friend lent the Amiga to me to try out for a month, and was probably one of the most memorable moments I've had, where I felt really inspired both by computers, and by storytelling in the most elegant and inspiring way!

Helping The (World) Economy
Wednesday, Nov 18, 2009 2:02AM / Members only
So currently President Obama is visiting China and Asia.....what more can I say? Other than he is very welcome in my home country, I believe most Chinese are proud to have him here. For the first time, we have someone in the Oval Office who is humble by any account, and not displaying any form of arrogance the moment they touch down. Far removed from policies of before, this is certainly a welcome development. Sadly it takes might and money for China to show this before anybody listens to them.......such is the ironies of life. If only they displayed this level of courtesy to China much earlier in history........maybe things would have been better for all......
In the light of his visit, the question of 'economy' and the current world slump/crisis springs to my mind. I've often pondered this question, and think to myself 'what can we do as individuals and people or nations, in this current world crisis, to help avert the situation?'. My suggestion would be simply........to spend money.

After a long thought, I've come to this very simple answer because I've realised.....this is the only way we are going to get out of our rut (at the moment) until we have a better solution than our current system. The truth is, if we do not spend the money it is going to be sitting there, and it's going to do nobody any good whatsoever. Look at the economies of the UK vs Germany for instance. The UK economy has been lasting the longest in all of Europe because of heavy consumer spending the last few years, whereas in Germany it was virtually stagnant because everyone was just saving and unwilling to spend. It shouldn't be like this........
My recommendation to all my friends and family is........if you can afford it, spend it. If you want something, just go and buy it.....you will be helping a lot of people in the process. Keep some of it, but above all, try to utilise it in some way......invest it or give it away, but don't keep it in the bank because the world needs it. Think of it as an energy of life......it is needed to refresh and to help the world.
Another point also is.......do not try to worry about the impact of consumer spending on the environment from a physical or spiritual perspective......the Earth I've found, has ways to recover itself. What I've noticed the last few years is that people are worried about the spending of money into consumer goods in case they further affect the environment by the filling of landfill sites. I say don't worry about this....the truth is there are far more companies doing recycling now more than ever before, and if you spend your money from an environmentally conscious perspective it will impact future consumer policies for sure. What you can do to help is to invest into ethical and environmentally friendly products, plans and projects and just be aware. ie. buy and eat less packaged goods, buy more environmentally friendly cars.
Talking of environmentally friendly products, on Saturday I came across this wonderful product in Mongkok:

It is an environmentally friendly washing ball from a Korean company called Biocera. Using 'Nano' technology it is capable of being totally clean and anti-bacterial and can produce up to 1,000 washes.......or a single wash for every day for the next 3 years. The great thing about this is it costs only about $450 HKD and you can wash with it till then, without the need for any more chemicals!!!! So no more chemicals going down the drain and no more tens of plastic bottles filling the landfills per household. How is that for being an ingenious product?

Scenes From HK...and Apple Crumble
Sunday, Nov 15, 2009 1:19PM / Members only
It's been a while since I've blogged about my photography. Maybe its because of the chilly November weather we've been getting lately that my nocturnal (caveman) instincts for art have been switched on!
One thing I love about HK since moving here is that there are so many places you can photograph good pictures. Not just any places but really beautiful, calm and atmospheric spots. And one of the most beautiful places you can do this, is at the harbour. If you can find a time during the day/evening, you can get some really good shots.

The reason I find the harbour here so entrancing, is that in London where I was from, there was very little harbour-like places that we could shoot good photos with. Apart from Central London where we had the River Thames, Docklands, London Eye and London Bridge....(London Eye is the ferris-like wheel where you can see the whole city from really high up) it was hard to find a good spot like HK where not only do you have lovely tall buildings but mountainous views. We had canals in some parts like the western side of Thames River near Kew, Richmond where you could get lovely shots of people and parked barges in the summer. But if you really wanted to take shots of picturesque boats on a lake/river in Britain, you had to go to places like the Lake District or old abbey in Cambridge, where they had the green grass, gondolas and bridge crossings.
So on the way home earlier this month, I took a stroll down the waterfront after work one evening. The sky was just starting to get dark then, but it was a beautiful bronze (it was quite hot earlier that day) and I managed to grab some shots of it:

Oh, and I caught this pic too! >

Apple Crumble
One of the things I really missed since coming to HK three years ago was the fact that I hadn't had my fix of Apple Crumble! Ever since I was little and introduced to the recipe by my friends and family, apart from Lemon Refridgerator (a really rare British lemon-cake recipe from one of my aunts) Apple Crumble had been designated as one of my all-time favourite desserts.
Apple Crumble is very different to Apple Pie. First there is no pastry involved, and secondly the base is filled with cooked softened apples (usually Brambles). The top is filled with a bread-crumb like topping, and when you combine the whole lot with thick custard it is just like......arr.......heaven!!
I'd gone to restaurants in Lei King Wan and Fat Angelos in HK before to try out desserts, but their so-called apple crumble (which was an apple pie tart in reality) was not up to scratch, sadly.
So you can imagine my surprise recently when my family decided to make our own apple crumble! My mum had wanted to cook some baked dishes for a long while, so we'd went out and bought a small oven. And this was the result....

Needless to say it was the best apple crumble I'd had in ages!

silkyposted on Sunday, Nov 22, 2009 6:18PM [Report]I think the reason for the depression and suicide of the korean model was the lost of identity and noticing that the life is not as she thought it would be....I know these feelings very well. Luckily I have friends who care for me and help me to build up a new future. I started to work for the consultancy and trading company of a friend and this helps me to try myself in new things in a secured surrounding which is quite helpful for me...

Thanks for being such a nice fren ;) Hugz
Now, that's why CCTV comes in handy when such cases happened :D
Quite a lot of possibilities like you said. Really hopes things sort out soon for your friend.. -
MICHELLE_KAYposted on Sunday, Nov 22, 2009 12:56AM [Report]Hi Jason,
Thanks so much, you been such a gem!
Well, before all of these were happening, I have sort of made up my mind for my life. I was planning to move on from my daily routine to something else. It gonna take me awhile to finally moved on entirely. I given myself till Dec to sort all out. Same goes with this relationship. Initial plan was to have a nice 3rd yr anniversary with him and then have a serious talk about US. If we still thinks the parents issue going to remain, I planned to move on and just be friends. I am the type of person prefers to address the problem, unlike him who likes to avoid. Maybe it is just shocked to me that he didnt respect me as a person, to come forward to talk to me as a person, but chicken out in such a manner and disregards our relationship for the past 3 years.
Anyhow, I met up with him yesterday. I see some hesitant in his eyes. Marrying someone whom you only met once, not knowing the person and not even able to plan out the life after marriage yet. It is really messing him up. I just felt pity for him. I was quite surprise I could actually face him and have a proper conversation with him without thinking of killing him or making a scene. Ah.. still, the trigger to my sadness is still unknown. I no longer cries to the song 'Already Gone' by Kelly Clarkson, but having to attend weddings I guess I will need time to suit myself for that.
I hoped to move on. I been planning some things out for myself next year. Hoping with baby steps I could move out from where I am and do what I like.
Wait! Canon 1DS Mark III - gone??? Geez! and no trace?? That's odd.... very hard to claim insurance. Insider job?? -
MICHELLE_KAYposted on Friday, Nov 20, 2009 5:36PM [Report]Hi Jason!
Thanks! I been feeling better. I woke up yesterday morning felt way much better. Perhaps like you said, i am laughing at my life.. I just find that GOD is just playing a huge joke on me.. because apart from this, I am actually sick at the moment, untill the point I thought I was having cancer but thank god it wasnt! I gotten clean bill from doctors after doing Ultra sound, but bad news is they havent find out whats wrong with me.. so I am still in pain and having my medication hoping all would end soon.
I woke up in the morning, I wrote a very long text message to him. I said to him after all these years, i only cared about him and him to be happy. Right now, I still feel the same. I wished I could tell him I hate him for what he had done for me, but I couldnt. I dont think I can change from loving someone for so long to hatred forever. I may be angry but I dont think I can hate him for long. So I wished him well, and I asked if he was happy. As long he is, I bid his marriage well. Thats all I can say.
I am meeting him tonight, basically to get back all my stuff from him and hopefully claim back the money he owes me. I hope I can face him, as a I am stronger person than he is. Just hope the tears wont come flowing down LOL I also spoke to his housemate, he only received his wedding invitation this morning. The rest of his buddies will be receiving it tonight.
I do feel that kids these days are so much mature than adults. The best point is they see things more direct and less complicated than us adults.. Maybe it is just us complicating our life too much -
Ee Hoon Khooposted on Thursday, Nov 19, 2009 4:10PM [Report]Hi Jason, can I meet you on the 14th Dec 2009. I will be in Hong Kong 13th - 15th. MICHELLE_KAYposted on Thursday, Nov 19, 2009 12:06PM [Report]thats my point.. i mean we are both adults..we can actually talk it thru and find a solution
and really the fact the parents cant accept me, fine i will walk away and we both can still be friends right?
but he messed up the situation so badly.. he himself cant even handle it.. i cant even accept a defeated battle where by I didnt even pull out my sword LOL if u get what I mean.. anyhow I will be alright ;)

Lydia Kuanposted on Tuesday, Nov 17, 2009 11:07PM [Report]Jason that's amazing.Have you tested it on anyone yet? Let me know. It's exciting -
MICHELLE_KAYposted on Tuesday, Nov 17, 2009 6:21PM [Report]Thanks Jason,
I had to let it go my chest.. if I dont, i will be like what you said, cry at a corner.. I used to do that until I got into depression..
I felt the need to write it out. People can laugh at my life and call me stupid, but it was a well lesson learn for me.
I know he will be unhappy, as he cant even manage his now screwed up life, and having a family now. I dont think he is ready for it. That is why the divorce rate is high -

I plan to be in HK a few days before the April 1 Leslie Cheung anniversary and probably for a day or two afterward. Plenty of time to make plans. As soon as my dates are firm, I'll drop you a private message. I want to come early enough to catch a new production of a Kunqu opera that Zuni Icosahedron is putting on at the end on March. -
Ee Hoon Khooposted on Monday, Nov 16, 2009 2:44PM [Report]okay, when I'm coming I will drop you a message. Hopong I can come in December. After Beijing, but have difficulty with tickets, most flights are full on the dates that I chose. -
silkyposted on Monday, Nov 16, 2009 5:27AM [Report]Hello Jason, thanks for your answer on my blog. These complex questions are thoughts that come up from time to time and which I like to write down and share with you all, which is quite helpful for me.
I think you situation is a little bit different, yet you are right that I have to reinvent myself and take things as a challenge and be just open to them. But before I gain my full strength back I have to leave a lot of disappointments and injuries behind me, which happened this year and which have a big share at the way I feel at the moment.
But the good thing is that I have friends around me who can see talents in me and make use of them before I know about them. So this is what I rely on at the moment and what keeps me going. I picked up a class in event management in order to have a profound basis for it. Other things are yet to come... - More comments >

Born and raised in England for most of my life, I came to live in Hong Kong with my HK-native family in 2006 to expand our family business, and start a new life in Asia. My background is in digital imaging from both material and creative aspects, and our family has been in the commercial creative printing business for well over 25 years. Our expertise in the field is so compelling that in 2006 with a European paper company we helped develop and launch our own groundbreaking photo inkjet paper called 'Da Vinci' which won the hearts of many artists over there. Apart from working with well-known people like the singer Robbie Williams, comedian Spike Milligan and even Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, my family has also worked in conjunction with firms like Epson and HP in London to promote the technology of environmentally friendly inkjet printing.
