The F word

That's right boys and girls, I'm talking about feminism, when did it become such a bad thing to be a feminist.  Hearing "I'm not a feminist but..." makes me want to bang my head against the wall.   Feminism is about choice for woman, wanting equal pay for equal work, living a life free from domestic and sexual abuse.  It is not about hating men (I love men) and being militant and burning bras etc.

I was reading Mark Allen's blog before (about rape prevention) and it really pissed me off.  It is the exact reason ...Read more

Kiwi in Korea 6 - Busan

Hi all

It was a long weekend here so K and I finally braved the buses and trains and went to Busan.  We stayed at Haeundae Beach, which is apparently famous, well it's famous in Korea and my supervisor used to have this picture on his office wall (because it contrasted starkly people wise with our local beaches in Nelson - you should know this is my idea of hell, however the beach is only like this in the summer holidays here in Korea - I intend to avoid at that time).  I am taking K to Japan in August for my week holiday....Read more

Kiwi in Korea 5 - junk food

My resolve to eat healthy has taken a few set backs.  K and I like to try out the different kinds of junk food while we are here, after all its all part of the experience

The vegetarian pizza with fries, for some reason pickles (gherkins, whatever) are provided with the pizza, along with hot sauce.  ...<a href=Read more

RIP Beryl Cook

Artist Beryl Cook, known for her colourful and comic paintings of larger-than-life ladies, has died at the age of 81.  I can remember my mother and my aunty buying each Beryl Cook calenders in the early 80s.   Beryl Cook had no training and didn't start painting until she was in her 40s.  Her work was largely ignored by the art establishment but was loved by the general public.  Beryl's inspiration was the people in the pubs of the city she lived (Plymouth).  For those of you unfamilar with her cheeky style of art - here is som...Read more

Kiwi in Korea 4 - Korean wrestling.

Yesterday Youngsan High School had its sports day.  It was a day the principal was hoping the students would enjoy because this year the boys and girls high schools have merged to become one school.  It was great, the school houses (though I'm not sure if they have school 'houses' like they do in the UK and NZ) looked really colourful and the backdrop of green mountains was lovely, the parents provided a beautiful lunch, it was a real community affair (it's days like yesterday that make me glad I came to th...Read more

Kiwi in Korea 3 - pizza with fries

Howdy everyone. hope you are all fine and dandy.

Had pizza tonight, we thought we would try the vegetarian pizza, it came with fries - litterally, they were on the pizza, under the cheese.  Weird never tasted so good.  I bought fizzy that I was hoping was lemonade but it turned out to be a really nice cider instead, both K and I really enjoyed it and I hope to find it in the supermarket.  Everybody thinks K is my sister until I spell out she is my daughter (very good for the ego I must say).

Met the grade on...Read more

Kiwi in Korea 2

Okay, don't have a lot to blog about, I'm just bored and lonely (I know I have to suck it up).

Currently I'm trying to learn to read some Korean, Mark pointed me in the direction of a really helpful website http://outsideinkorea.com/inside/2006/08/readingkoreanpart_one.php

I have found it interesting watching the behaviour of the High School students.  I like the fact that they hold hands - girls with girls...Read more

Kiwi in Korea update 1

Actually there are many Kiwi's in Korea but I am the only one in my town, infact K and I are the only westerners living here.  I may buy a t-shirt that says, "No, I'm not American".

Things are settling down and K and I are freaking out less.  It helps we now have internet and phone.  It also helps I now have time to prepare for my lessons properly.  I still get a little nervous every morning though.

Good news on the laptop front, Casskickass was right, the ...Read more
