Found myself at my family doctor's for an annual physical. The last exam was four years ago with the primary purpose of updating my booster vaccination. A good thing I'd done this a while back, and after 1995's change in formulation, due to the current epidemic of whooping cough.

If I had remembered that I'd taken care of the booster years ago I would not have volunteered for this recent physical. Doh! Oh well. I got the chance to reacquaint myself with the nice, woman doctor.

From this exam, I learned a few things. First is that I'm due for my next booster in 6 years. Second, was that my weight hadn't changed since the last visit. My weight is not a thing I keep tabs on so this was welcome news. Also learned about a couple of other housekeeping items.

When I think of it I've weighed about the same for the last....15 years, at least. Hm. I think that, aside from the usual stuff that happens after having kids, e.g. the massive destruction of our mid-section, I wonder why I think I look "beefier?" Not chunkier but thicker? in the other parts. What's spreading? Is my bone's slow density loss being replaced with body-wide fat, which is why my weight is holding steady?

Well, I'm not worried too much about it. Just continue to eat healthy and exercise, is all I think I can do. I was thinking I should reduce my intake of "bad carbs," like no more white rice. Brown all the way.

Speaking of brown rice; a new development in my house. Acquired a new rice cooker to replace the rusted one. This new cooker - labeled OYAMA, which easily (slyly) passes itself off as Japanese but is actually manufactured in China -  utilizes a shiny, stainless steel pot.

This steel pot does a better job of cooking the brown rice. I've always thought the texture of cooked brown rice akin to chewing pebbles and bark but that's where I was deceived. The Oyama cooker softens those tough hulls into something that's more much more palatable! Something those without stomachs of steel might now accept, not shun, if willing. ;P

  • Scott Pilgrim Matrix

    Friday, Aug 27, 2010 9:00PM / Members only

Know next to nothing about Scott Pilgrim Versus the World...but know that Michael Cera's shtick is tired and off-putting (wimp. wuss. whiner.). I did very much like The Matrix (I).

    Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RsZErYEXz8&feature=player_embedded

The Matrix was a fabulous, fabulous, mind-blowing ride of a sci-fi back in 1999. The story, martial arts action, costumes, bullet time, cinematography....everything. Just everything. ;P

Sure would like to encounter another movie that blows my mind. Inception kind-of did.

  • Blinging on FB

    Wednesday, Aug 25, 2010 9:00PM / Members only

Came upon a recent "status" of a friend on Facebook:

About two year ago i got my kids credit cards with their own names on them. So we are on vacation and credit card company stops [wife's] card because charges were not normal. [Wife] does not know this and is shopping at GUCCI when she goes to pay. My ten year old daughter whips out her card and says use mine mommy. The lady at the counter ask [daughter] for her ID so [daughter] pulls out her ID from elemetary school and shows the lady. Lady at the counter says OK. And actually charges a $2000 purchace on [daughter's] card. Look on mom's face PRICELESS!!

Starting on that credit history a little early, doncha think? Even pre-adolescent kiddies need a credit card for emergencies, right? Mr. Priceless is either commenting on his wife's taste for designer handbags and shoes or he's boasting he can support a wife who prefers designer bags and shoes. Or both.

I remind Mr. P how lucky he is that his own wife cares not a wit for such conspicuous and pricey goods. I do say it would be nice to receive a pricey trinket, preferably made with a diamond or two - and can be used to decorate the finger, wrist or earlobe - now and then. Heehee.

Mr. P reminds me that he's already bought me a couple of condos.

I respectfully yet ruefully reply that one cannot wear a condo, nor can one drive a condo. Hello-oh! LOL.

  • Android, Jane Austen and me

Jane Austen in Scarsdale: Or Love, Death and the SATs

I borrowed this book from the library, thinking it had more to do with Jane Austen. Like maybe another story in the vein of time-space-continuum-mix-up-trading-lives-Janeite. It was so not of this fantasy, romantic-comedy ilk. It was, however, a very entertaining, charming rom-com that shares Jane Austen's Persuasion plot.

What made this novel poignant were the passages on the competitive and high-pressure college admission process (test prep, college packagers, over-worked students, etc.). The main character is a high school guidance counselor who must interact with extremely anxious parents about their child's future success...which, y'know, totally hinges on the college they get into
    .

Brr, made me a little sick to the stomach as to what I will inevitably confront. Witty and breezy writing added humor to the serious h.s. business combined with the Persuasion-esque spin was different.

    Huh?
! When I did a search on bing.com for an image of the book cover, it brought up a few of my photos from Alivenotdead...like the one where Daniel's returning my hug (which was very SKWEEEE! at the time ). Weird.

    Next:

    Android Karenina

I've never read any Tolstoy; been avoiding them actually. Adding robots to this love story did the trick though. haha. This fantastical rendition finds companion robots, a new generation of cyborgs that threaten to take over human thoughts, slithering worm-like creatures busting out of the earth, and parasites that bring dire consequences to its human hosts.

The love stories were kind of overshadowed by the fantasy...to my relief. Would rather read less about others' depressing situations and relationship dramas at this point in time. Escape, escape!

  • Bedbugs at the cinema

    Thursday, Aug 19, 2010 12:06AM / Members only

    Yuk!

Imagine sittin' down to a movie at your favorite theater and coming out with bug bites all over your body. Bed bugs habiting the seats? Ick!!!

After seizing the Brooklyn DA's office and the Time Warner Center last week, a new division of bloodthirsty bedbugs has sacked the AMC Empire 25 multiplex in Times Square. A moviegoer who requested anonymity tells us that 30 minutes into last night's screening of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, she was "covered in bites." (Guess The New Yorker was right—that movie really does bite, eh?) And it's not just the Times Square location that's infested, according to our source.

"The staff at the customer service desk confirmed that the theater has known of the infestation for days and that it will not be fumigated until Tuesday," says the bitten woman. "They also told me that the AMC on 125th is fighting a bedbug infestation as well." Bedbugs thrive in the dark, and have previously feasted on moviegoers in Park Slope and Sheepshead Bay. Obviously, this is just another reason to go with Netflix, but doesn't the movie theater have some obligation to warn customers that they're being dinner and a movie?

I'd imagine it'd be even more mortifying on top of paying for a movie that really sucked as well. :D

I've usually only been worried about lice on theater seats. And everything else that could be found on the seats, I try not to think about.

We have blockbuster but it's still expensive. i'll rather just wait a couple of years and then buy the dvd's.
I def. want to watch Scott Pilgrim and Despicable Me but it's taking forever to watch it in the cinema. think it will be out next month or so...

yeah, i could mix, but i'll rather do "nail-art" but have been trying to avoid any nail polish at all :)

I don't know who's coming yet. Donnie has a tendency to skip filmfest appearances but he does leave a note for those who attend the screening. It's happened more than once and I think it's going to happen again. I have a feeling that Andrew Lau and Shu Qi will be there. I'm crossing my fingers for Anthony Wong to be there. Just for that, I think I will bring my Stormriders bluray for the occasion. All 3 were involved in that movie. I get them to sign it all in one place. Like hitting 2 birds with one stone.

It's very Peachey-centric. The last scene is the female lead at a _book reading_.

The whole movie was her _novel_.

    Because ghosts aren't real.

Only-Indian things include the fact that when we go to an indian wedding, we really don't care WHO is getting married, it's WHERE they are getting married that matters. Is the hotel they've chosen going to provide good food at the buffet and are the bartenders worth my wait in line for my free whiskey? :P
Ahaha yea I can mobile upload my facebook and hopefully that means a bit more frequet updates.. unlike my "check-facebook-every-3-to-4-weeks" habit before :P

I'm sure you are familiar with the term "Aunty" amongst indians :P Its funny how this term has its own twist in our community, signifying a woman who is married, gossipy and optionally fat :P

Certainly sounded to liven Tolstoy up, his workings make me think he would be perfect for an Emo these days, it's depression served in a paperback.

Yeah it was pretty bad. I don't blame you . I'd wait for Vampire Sucks as well. The funny parts are probably all in the commercial. I agree about Kick Ass. I was actually pretty shocked at it. It wasn't what I expected.

Yeah it's not surprising how many men find Audition more psychologically damaging than women :D

I think I'll have to watch Martyrs again, I'm sure there wasn't that much violence or gore to be honest, it was definitely more psychological factors, maybe I didn't watch closely enough.

Howdy, nothing available yet comedy wise online, I will probably put some videos up but Im deciding which bit it should be :P heheee Ive realized Ive become quite attached to my comedy bits for some reason and recently some people have even hacked some of my stuff for their own performances and that actually really annoyed me because Ive always wanted to be open about my material but its like inviting a friend for dinner and being robbed while you were serving dessert....:\
Aahaha 99% going for a samsung galaxy S.. i love android more than iphone :p
