You know that you're here for a reason. You know it. And if you leave this place, that knowledge is gonna eat you alive from the inside out... until you decide to come back.
- John Locke in "LOST" - Season 4, Episode13
Today I read the very sad news on tinlunlau's blog that Hong Kong movie legend Shing Fui-on has passed away on August 27th 2009 at the young age of 54. My deepest condolences and well-wishes to his family. Rest in peace.
The first film I remember watching with Shing Fui-on's appearance was John Woo's The Killer. I first watched the movie in 1995 and I was only 11 years old. My older brother brought home the video tape and even though I was very young I understood the film and just loved the shoot-outs. Shing Fui-on's screen presence had an intimidating impact on me back then and still has today whenever I watch the movie. Anyone who has seen the film will agree with me that he brilliantly portrayed the ruthless gangster boss who just wouldn't catch a bullet by Chow Yun-fat or Danny Lee during the final shoot-out.
I subsequently saw him in God of Gamblers. Here he played yet another mob boss who Chow Yun-fat and Andy Lau play against in a gambling den. Even though it is a serious situation on paper it was a hilariously funny scene and Shing Fui-on was as responsible for the scene's success in being funny as it was the film's leading actors'.
One of my favourite scenes in HK movie history features Shing Fui-on. It is the beginning of Herman Yau's Ebola Syndrome. Here the character of Anthony Wong (Hard Boiled, Infernal Affairs, Exiled) has sex with a woman who happens to be the wife of a gang boss played by, you guessed it, Shing Fui-on. The scene starts to become hilarious as Shing Fui-on and his men catch the two in the act. The way he punishes Anthony Wong's character is just legendary. Check it out if you haven't seen it.
He has appeared in over 200 films and his performances were so memorable that whenever he showed up on the screen filmfans from all over the world would go, "Hey, that's the bad guy from The Killer."
Hey everybody, I just found a quite amusing fan version of the Edgar-teaser. The guy changed the music and some sound effects and it seems that he got hold of a version with no colour correction. You can watch the fan-made version below.
The following blog entry is written by Filippo Valle (Finn) the lead actor of FINALE and Bae Seul-Ki’s co-star. He tells us how he got involved with FINALE and about his impressions of his trip to Seoul.
The story of how I got to play Finn is indeed what an actor would like to happen every time he or she goes to meet with a director. I went into meeting to be interviewed for a smaller role and on the second meeting I was asked if I was interested in playing Finn. "Are you kidding me?" I said "I wanted to play Finn from the first moment I read the script!" I was delighted, and after I got to know Rouchdi I was honored too, because I truly believe that Rouchdi is a special, a good hearted soul, very giving person and has something special to offer with this movie and I am glad to be part of it. What impressed me the most on our first meeting is how meticulous and detailed Rouchdi is, which I love because I am like that myself. Hussain has to work twice as hard of course because he has to listen and translate to English quite a bit!! I also spent a week in Seoul with the two of them to meet with the lead actress Bae Seul-Ki, the action director Jung Doo-Hong and the music composer Jo Yeong-wook. Great experience in Seoul guys, and Jung Doo-Hong is the best. I was introduced to him one night at a restaurant but the funny thing is that every time he tried to walk to our table he would be stopped by all different people, they would just not leave him alone which made our wait longer and longer... That guy is so busy with what he does, that knowing that he is thrilled to work with us on Finale gives me extra adrenaline. The shooting date has been pushed back a couple of times now but" Man, I am so ready for this one, I can barely sleep at night!!!"
This is actually the very first digital storyboard I have directed for an action sequence about 4 years ago.
Digital
Storyboards are used mostly for action scenes of high value film
productions. The action director gathers his team and films the action
scene the way he imagines it. This is done at a very low or no cost at
all. It is just to display the director and the producers of the film
what the action sequence at a certain point in the film might look like.
If
they like the result of the digital storyboard, then it is re-shot with
high quality production values using the actual actors of the film, 16
or 35mm cameras, lighting etc. If they don't like it the scene usually ends up in the archive of its director.
The
scene you see here was shot in 6 hours and with a usual MiniDV camcorder.
It would take far longer when done professionally due to various
reasons. For example would you need to setup the lighting over and over
again with every new angle you are shooting from. Of course we wouldn't
face such problems when shooting the basic digital material.
Unfortunately,
this very first action scene I directed was not re-shot professionally
in the finished film, because the producers thought it was too unrealistic. But I kept the digital material as a remembrance.
I hope though it's good enough for you guys to enjoy it! =)

Hussain Abdullah has been fascinated by movies (especially Asian cinema) since his early childhood. Over and over he worked on TV productions and commercials as extra, stunt performer & coordinator, runner, grip, driver etc. However, what he enjoyed doing a lot more was making short martial-arts videos with his team called GoingVisual. He was a movie and DVD reviewer for many years before he started working as 1st Assistant Director on his first international action movie called FINALE.
