Your Back Pain – Explained

Though often thought of as a separate condition, sciatica is actually a pain resulting from an entirely different disorder. Most of the time, this pain is caused by pressure placed on the sciatic nerve from a herniated or ruptured disk. But since the pain manifests down one of your legs, people often believe it to be something else. Fortunately, you don't need to simply suffer with this pain, as there are a number of things you can do at home to bring about relief. Back pain is pain felt in the back that usually originates from the muscles , nerves , bones , joints or other structures in the spine

For many back-pain sufferers, traditional treatment is usually confined to physical therapy and pain medication, but just as many patients are turning to chiropractic care as an alternate treatment and a means to avoid surgery. According to the Mayo Clinic's website, chiropractic medicine "is based on the concept that restricted movement in the spine may lead to pain and reduced function." Chiropractors often use spinal adjustment to treat restricted spinal mobility or decompression machines to help impaired disc heal. But is it worth trying? Hyperlordosis is an inborn exaggerated inward curve in the lumbar area. Scoliosis, an abnormal curvature of the spine in children, does not usually cause back pain.

Sciatic pain is often described as burning and tingling with an accompanying weakness in the legs. Frequently, sciatic pain stems from a herniated, or degenerated disk in the lumbar spine which can irritate the sciatic nerve, the largest nerve in the human body. Natural treatments can be effective in alleviating the symptoms often associated with sciatica pain. Some cases of sciatica pain may occur when a muscle located deep in the buttocks pinches the sciatic nerve. This muscle is called the piriformis. The resulting condition is called piriformis syndrome. Piriformis syndrome usually develops after an injury. It is sometimes difficult to diagnose. back pain pregnancy

Spondylolisthesis causes lower back pain and a narrowing of the vertebral canal. The condition can also cause leg pain if the area where the nerves come out of the spinal canal narrows. There are five major types of spondylolisthesis, but they are all caused by a vertebra that slips forward and puts pressure on the adjacent vertebrae. Treatment for spondylolisthesis ranges from rest to surgery, depending on the severity of the condition and associated pain levels. Four out of five people will experience lower back pain. One of the potential causes of persistent lower back pain is a herniated disc, also known as a bulging disc (see Reference 1).

Epidural steroid injections can help relieve pain caused by inflamed spinal nerves, bulging discs and other spinal conditions. The injections are given between the vertebrae and the protective covering of the spinal cord. The positive effects of epidural steroid injections are usually temporary, and you may need more than one injection to reach and maintain the desired level of pain reduction. The spine is a complex interconnecting network of nerves, joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments, all of which are capable of producing pain. Large nerves that originate in the spine and go to the legs and arms can make pain radiate to the extremities. 4 Classification edit

In the most common cases of low back pain, professional organizations recommend that physicians not immediately seek a diagnosis but instead begin treatment to reduce pain. 23 24 25 This assumes that the physician has no reason to expect that the patient has an underlying problem. 25 In most cases, the pain goes away naturally after a few weeks. 25 Research has shown that typical patients who do seek diagnosis through imaging are not likely to have a better outcome than patients who wait for the condition to resolve. 25 26 27 back pain relief
