While a tailbone injury usually heals itself after a brief period of time, those who suffer from chronic cases of coccyx pain may have to live with the condition for several years or even for life. The tailbone is a very delicate bone and is prone to injuries caused by trauma and other causes. And when compared to other cases of back pain, coccyx pain can be one of those that take the longest time to heal. Minor injuries can take months to heal, while cases like a fractured coccyx can take years for complete healing to occur.
The sciatic nerve runs under or, in some people, through the piriformis muscle. This muscle is located in the pelvis. It is connected to the bottom of the spine and the top of the femur, or thighbones. If the piriformis muscle starts to spasm or becomes tight, it can put pressure on the sciatic nerve and cause the pain as well as the radiating symptoms. This persistent spasm of the piriformis muscle is called piriformis syndrome. It can be caused by an injury or sedentary lifestyles in people who don't stretch or exercise. Particularly if you sit all day at a desk or computer, this can be a problem.
I finally couldn't take it anymore, ( it's the same pain you feel in your legs when you are in active labor,) so I went to the ER. The doctor there confirmed that yes, I have sciatica. He leaves the room and my nurse comes in and has me take some prednisone and darvisets. About thirty minutes later, I was almost pain free. The doctor returns to my room and tells me he is going to prescribe me prednisone, a muscle relaxer and a few pain pills. I get my discharge papers and prescriptions. I got the prednisone, Norflex and Ultram. WRONG!!!
At the time my back "went out on me", I had just harvested my winter keeping onions. I had them drying on old screen doors in the garage. The screens were propped up on house blocks. I was going through the onions, rearranging so that they wouldn't touch and mold. I was bent over and stretched way forward when I felt a sudden, sharp pain in my back. Ignoring it, I reached even further, intent on my job. I felt the sensation of my back "dropping away", and then intense pain. I should've stopped at the point of the first twinge.
Piriformis syndrome is believed to be a condition in which the piriformis muscle, a narrow muscle located in the buttocks, compresses or irritates the sciatic nerve. There is debate within the medical community whether this is a discrete condition, since it lacks objective evidence, and thus can not be reliably evaluated. Pain associated with piriformis syndrome is exacerbated in prolonged sitting. Specific physical findings are tenderness in the sciatic notch and buttock pain in flexion, adduction, and internal rotation of the hip. Imaging modalities are rarely helpful. Physical therapy is a mainstay of conservative treatment; and is usually enhanced by local injections (Papadopoulos and Khan, 2004).
Sitting for long periods and that too without any support can create muscle tension and result in pain in the lower portion of our back. Back pain is now so prevalent that studies are showing 8 out 10 people suffer or will suffer from back pain. We use our bodies in many different ways from light duty to heavy duty. Light duty could be staring over the computer for a few hours and then our neck and shoulders ache. Heavy duty could be unloading heavy boxes or packages which may concentrate soreness in the lower back. Getting relief is important to reduce pain and help healing.
But you need not worry as there are various treatments that can help you get rid of back pain. Pain relieving medications are usually the first choice to treat chronic back pain. Counterirritants, a category of topical medications can be used to treat chronic back ache. These medicines are available in a cream or easy to spray form. these medicines trigger your sensory receptors and enable them to fight the pain. Antidepressant medications, when taken in small doses can also help treat back pain. Nortriptyline, desipramine, amitriptyline, doxepin etc are some examples of tricyclic antidepressants that can help relieve back pain.
In order to restore movement and alleviate pain, chiropractors will use therapeutic massage and stretching exercises, and some may also teach patients breathing exercises and a few stretching techniques which the patient can then practice at home. Arthritis and Other Joint Related Pain The various joints in a person's body endure a great amount of wear during the course of a person's life, and as one grows older this can often lead to a person experiencing a great deal of pain. In fact, because of the huge amount of wear occurring in the joints, many people even experience limited mobility or arthritis.
Sometimes it seems hard to figure out the best way to battle back pain. For many women the fact that their back hurts has just become the norm. Over time they've become accustom to the ache that ails them. Often times, the only recourse seems to be back surgery. No one likes the idea of that. Back surgery can take up to a year to recover from and for those wives and mothers out there that's just an impossible amount of time. But for some women, a tummy tuck can actually help their back pain and the recovery time is just a fraction of that of a back surgery.
The AARP suggests doing arm stretches if you have a stiff back. To do them, stand with legs about shoulder-length apart. Face forward with the knees straight and loose. Keep the arms at your sides with the palms facing inward. Slowly raise your right arm as you bend to the left, keeping the palm pointed at the floor. As you bend, slide your left palm down the side of your leg. Face forward, keeping the head aligned with the spine. Hold this stretch for approximately five to 30 seconds. Repeat stretch on the other side. You Might Also Like Knee to chest
