  • 2046 by Wong Kar Wai starring Tony Leung and Zhang Ziyi

    Tuesday, Oct 11, 2011 6:35PM / Members only

2046 is an awesome film by acclaimed Hong Kong director Wong Kar Wai. Set in late – 1960’s Hong Kong.

It follows the life and exploits of Chow Mo Wan (played by Tony Leung Chiu - Wai).

He is a journalist with a playboy lifestyle and is currently writing fictional stories. One such story is a science fiction tale about a high tech train that carries people to the year 2046 to reclaim their lost memories.

Chow Mo Wan imagines people who he has met in real life and places them in the context of this wild science fiction story, making for some interesting scenes.

  • Infernal Affairs 2 by Anthony Lau and Alan Mak starring Andy Lau and Tony Leung

    Tuesday, Oct 11, 2011 6:21PM / Members only

Infernal Affairs was the story of two men whose paths cross in extraordinary ways to a bitter ending.

In an imaginative plot twist you will be on the edge of your seat waiting for one to meet the other.

Make no mistake; this is one of the best films I’ve seen for a long time.

It’s an intense thriller with stunning performances by all and the climax really pays off.

During that film we were treated to a brief flashback scene showing both men in their younger days.

  • The Emperor and the Assassin by Chen Kai Ge starring Gong Li and Zhang Feng Yi and Li Xue Jian

    Sunday, Oct 9, 2011 8:30PM / Members only

This is a classic piece of Chinese cinema directed by the legendary Chen Kaige.

Originally released in 1999 and now available on DVD, you really need to see this film.

Why? Let me tell you. Imagine a man with unlimited power on a quest to unify his country to achieve the will of his ancestors.

Imagine that same man, decimated, as all the personal relationships he depends on, both family and friends, slowly fall apart around him as a result of his brutal one-man crusade.

    Intrigued yet?

    You will be.

  • Save the Green Planet by Jang Jun Hwan starring Shin Ha Hyun

    Sunday, Oct 9, 2011 8:26PM / Members only

This is a Korean film by acclaimed director and writer Jang Jun-Hwan starring actor Shin Ha-Hyun in the lead role.

Produced by Tartan Films’ Asia Extreme line, I attended an advanced screening for Chinatown magazine.

Our protagonist, the self styled protector of the planet, Byung-Gu (Shin Ha-Hyun) starts off on a quest to save the Earth from invading aliens.

With the help of his alter ego, garbed in a very homemade costume, he is steadfastly resolute to complete his quest at all costs.

Running parallel to this is the study of one man’s mental breakdown and the factors leading up to it. Byung-Gu’s actions are grotesquely comedic in places and torturingly macabre in others.

  • Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon by Ang Lee starring Chow Yun Fat, Michelle Yeoh and Zhang Ziyi

    Sunday, Oct 9, 2011 8:22PM / Members only

I have to include in my reviews, one of the greatest Chinese language films, in my opinion, to come out in recent times.

I am of course talking about Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon which debuted in 2000.

Directed by Ang Lee and starring Chow Yun Fat (Zhou Runfa), Michelle Yeoh (Yang Ziqiong) and Zhang Ziyi.

It is spoken in Mandarin language with English subtitles.

This film is a true masterpiece and if you haven’t seen it yet I recommend that you check it out and prepare for a feast.
