Holy Crap I'm Awkward
Tuesday, Aug 19, 2008 5:37AM / Standard Entry
I've come to the realization that I'm HECKA AWK to the WARD!!!! I kid you not. To prove my point I have recalled a story from the past school year: an encounter with a very hot, very cute and very smooth talking bboy that I danced with in my crew (WreckBreakz). Needless to say, I had a bit of a crush on him and we had a mini thing, but at the point of this story I was still in that stage of being very nervous around him. Sadly the guy has gone on to do better things, ie: grad school at UWO, a couple hours away from me...boo. Well, on with the story:
I spent most of my days in the library. I knew how hard it was to get into my intended program so I worked really hard and did my best to focus on what was important. After classes on most days, I would go to the library to do my school work and stay pretty much until the library closed at 2AM. Geeky, I know. But competition is high, I can't afford to get booted for being lazy.
One day while I was working on some biology notes, jamming to my iPod while sitting at my hole in the wall, I had yet to realize the awkward moment that would be bestowed upon me as my stay at the library continued. After a lot of note-writing, I decided to take a little break. Being the extreme dork I am, I've learned a few dorky tricks to go along with my image. I can spin pens on my fingers in all sorts of directions, and my pride and joy: I can balance a pen on my upper lip. Like so:
Blows your mind, doesn't it? Well on this day, I decided to go with the pen-on-upper-lip look and I turned to my friend, who was working beside me, to make her laugh. As she cracked up next to me, I heard a guy voice say, "Hey Virginia. I thought I'd find you here." I turned around, with the pen still on my lip, to see hot dance guy Thomas standing in front of me. My face turned dull and the pen dropped from my face. Crap, now it's dirty.
"Oh hey Thomas!" and before Thomas could say anything in response, I was on my way down to pick up my dirtied pen. Little did I know, these stupid library desks do not give very good head clearance way, and I proceeded to bang my forehead on the edge of the desk...hard. Hard enough for my side of the library to hear the thud and then my "AHHHHH" to follow. "GOD DAMN" I thought, as my head was throbbing and a bruise probably forming.
"Ahaha are you okay??" Thomas laughed, as I rubbed my dumb head.
"Oww...yeah I'm fine," I said. "So what are you doing here today?"
"Oh, just working on a presentation for PHIL class, you?"
"Bio notes...not fun...boo." Our small talk continued in a similar manner for a little while. When I'm nervous, I have a big tendency to play with my hair. I feel the need to keep my hands busy because they would probably be shaking if I weren't doing something with them. I'm pretty sure people see me as being more interested in how many split ends I have than what they have to say. I swear, I'm not =(!!
Well as I talked, I combed my fingers through my then long hair (I have shorter hair now.) Suddenly I felt my fingers hit a knot. All I could think of was HELLZ NO my hand is stuck!! As we talked, I tried yanking out the knot to get my hand out. The more I yanked, the more I got tangled. The embarrassment could not have been more intense. By this point I didn't care, and I just untangled my hair in front of Thomas. Totally unattractive, but I had to get my hand out of there. So now, Thomas probably saw me as a girl with a bruise on her head and funky looking hair from an untangled knot. HAWT haha. After exchanging a few more words, Thomas said "I'm going to refill on coffee, want to come with me?"
Not being one to turn down a walk with a cute boy, I agreed and we headed to the Tim Horton's across the street. As he was paying for our drinks, I went to grab our drinks at the other counter. I guess my fingers are really strong or something, because when I picked up my hot chocolate the lid popped off the cup and the hot beverage then proceeded to spill on me. On my bare, flip flop wearing feet where I definitely felt the burn. Like "AHHH !@$#@%@!!!!!" hot.
"SHIT are you okay??!" Thomas asked.
"Yeah, I'm fine. Can you grab me some napkins?"
After drying off my scorched phalanges we left Tim Horton's and went our separate ways for the day. After I went back to the library, I realized that I was a huge embarassing mess and Thomas was there to see every minute of it. Luckily, Thomas is still a good buddy of mine and he forgives all my awkward ways =).

My Favourite B-Girl: Bgirl Sofia
Tuesday, Aug 19, 2008 4:06AM / Standard Entry
Check out the video below of my favourite bgirl: Sofia Boutella. She's one of the most talented bgirls I've ever seen because she can break like no other but still retain that element of femininity and grace...hard to do in a style of dance dominated my males.
Hip hop culture is a big part of my life; although I may not look the part with my fobby interests and nerdy habits, in reality I eat, sleep, and breathe hip hop culture, music and dance. I hope one day I may be able to become even half as good as Bgirl Sofia, but we'll see how things go.
Until then, check the real thing:

BETCHA'LL didn't know I play piano?!?!?! haha =). Truth is, I'm a huge music dork. Like serious music dork...as in Classical training since age 5, summer music programs in France, study with world class professors, performance with orchestras DORK. That's right. I'm a geek =).
Anyways, this is a song I've been working on for the last couple weeks, called Saved. My apologies for the bad quality and crappy video...I only made it a video so I could upload it onto AnD easier. Funny story to go with the making of this song though....I recorded the singing in the shower!! Hahaha...I literally "sang in the shower" -- in every sense of the phrase. Why, you may ask? I couldn't find a closet and the acoustics were better in the shower than anywhere else in the house =)!
Click on the video above for the song. Check it out, leave comments, do whatever. Just don't steal it. I will be very sad if I hear this song one day and am not given credit for it =(! Please refrain from laughing at my singing...I am not a vocalist, as much as I would like to be... I am a pianist =)!------------------------------------------------------------------
LYRICS
SAVED
There was dark before light,
There was night before day,
There was sadness before joy,
Let me see Your face,
I want to hear Your voice.
I'm here to feel Your love,
Be witness to Your grace.
You see now that I've changed,
I am strong, I am brave,
You brought me from my harm and my shame.
Let me see Your face,
I want to hear Your voice.
I'm here to feel Your love,
Be witness to Your grace.
You found me lost and so unarmed,
The tears I cried were all in vain.
Without your guidance I know no way,
You set me free,
You are what it means to love.
Let me see Your face,
I want to hear Your voice.
I'm here to feel Your love,
I've finally seen Your grace.

Alright so as much as I would like to try grilled pho, it is not my real name. I'm Virginia, and welcome to my very lame Alivenotdead.com page!
I'm a second year Life Sciences major at Queen's University in Kingston, ON. I'm pretty much your average white-washed Asian girl...however I do speak the language (Canto...holla!!), listen to the occasional Asian hit single, and watch a sappy Taiwanese drama here and there. The only reason I am at all educated in the realm of Asian pop culture is due to my friends and somewhat fobby-but-not-fobby cousins. I owe them (and my parents!!) my Asian-ness!!
Even though I am Cantonese, I prefer the Taiwanese stars and dramas because let's face it...Wang Lee Hom is pretty much the cutest man on the planet!! He represents the Taiwanese well so if you're from Taiwan, be proud to have such a pretty man as one of your own...well sort of.
Umm...outside my Asian interests (what little there is), I'm very into hip hop culture. I'm a Bgirl (for those of you not up with the "lingo", that means break dancer of the female gender haha) and I love listening to anything with a hot beat. I'm trained as a jazz dancer so my style is a fusion of ballet and old school hip hop. I love to break it down wherever I am, but I'm too shy to ever do it in a club haha.
Hmm alright, that's me in a big-ass nut shell. If you're really curious...look me up on Facebook, but I won't guarantee you'll have access to my profile! Hahaa peace y'all!
Anyways, I'm kind of lonely on here with only one friend. I guess that's what I get for being the loner out West in Canada....all by my lonesome in my fobby adventures. Drop a line if you want =)! - Age: 20
