I had to share this comic, Secret Asian Man, which I am totally addicted to. I just read this and realized that I have written a new musical genre, hip-hop with violins and piano, lol.

Here's an mp3 of a hip hop score that I wrote for an award-winning short film called Hit Me, which aired on Showtime's Black Filmmaker Showcase last year. You'll hear several tracks of viola (with light distortion), processed clarinet, and some low piano, in addition to the synths and hip hop beats. What do you think, am I on the cusp of a new genre here?

  • Saturday Screening at Newport Beach Film Festival

    Wednesday, Apr 23, 2008 6:11PM / Standard Entry

    Sea of Tranquility screening
    Dir. by: JP Bolles

I just found out I have a short film screening this Saturday, April 26th at the Newport Beach Film Festival. It's screening at 4pm as part of the LMU Showcase. I'm hoping to have time to get away from my work to go check out the screening, cause it's one of the best written and executed short films I've worked on, and some of the other shorts on the program look pretty cool too.

He struggles between his opportune loss and soon after the betrayal of a nation when he discovers that the trip to the moon never left the studio. Collins is confronted by NASA and is bribed to keep his knowledge of the conspiracy quiet. He backs down and signs away his rights to the mission, a decision that breaks his spirit and marks the beginning of an everlasting lie.

  • New Track

    Monday, Apr 21, 2008 5:27AM / Standard Entry

I've posted a new track, entitled WORLD OF MUSIC. It's a cool mish mash of different musical styles. I originally wrote it as a demo for a TV gig, which I didn't get, but I had a ton of fun writing it, and got to collaborate with some awesome musicians.

    Featuring:
on Turntables - DJ Hawk (aka Adam Hawk)
on Guitars - Eugene Huang (myspace.com/eugenehuang)
on Vocals - Sue Jin (myspace.com/suejinmusic)

  • Scenes

    Friday, Apr 18, 2008 8:56AM / Video

I recently uploaded on youtube, some scenes that I scored while studying film scoring at USC and another that I scored during the ASCAP film scoring workshop. I'm surprised it's already been four years since I did these. Hope you enjoy seeing my take on these scenes.

Here's a scene from JIMMY NEUTRON, that I did during the ASCAP Film Scoring Workshop. Star Wars was a big influence, and I figured it'll be a long time before I ever get another opportunity to write a big Star Wars-ish type of sci-fi score and decided to go all out with the Star Wars feel.

From the recording session at FOX.

This is the trailer from the film, MAN ON FIRE. When I originally scored this in school, my drum programming was really bad. So I remixed it with much cooler drum sounds.

The one time we got to pick a scene, instead having one assigned, I decided to do a scene from Final Fantasy. In the original movie, the score here is very ambient and creepy. I thought it would make a good scene to do a very primal action cue, when done outside of the movie's context. I had a lot of fun with this, and got to record with my biggest size orchestra yet, a 60 piece USC Symphony, at Paramount.

This was taken before I owned a digital camera. The orchestra was so big it didn't fit in the whole picture.

Here's a scene from Mystery Alaska. It's about a small town hockey team that gets to play against the NY Rangers. Of course they lose, but in the eyes of the townspeople, they're heroes for trying. It gave me an opportunity to write a very exciting Disney-esque theme.
