Sadly, it's been way too long since I last logged on to AnD.  Life in a new country will do that to you, though.
It's been three months now since I moved to Hong Kong and life has sure been flashing by.  There's so much to do, see and eat, and so many new people to meet that there just doesn't seem to be enough time in the day.

    ~ ** ~

I've spent some time checking out the new nooks and crannies around Hong Kong.  Well, not so new per se, but new to me.
Here are some of my favourite things so far...
    vintage bike

    Around the corner...

    Village dwelling

    Bonsai!

  • The hardest thing I did this week

    Friday, Jun 12, 2009 8:46PM / Members only

I'm moving overseas.  To Hong Kong, actually.  Until today I was really, really excited about the move - the new opportunities ahead, the new friends I would make, the new personal challenges I would face.
And then I had to do the hardest thing I have ever done.  I had to say goodbye to my best friend.  She was teary; I was teary.  The move wasn't meant to have shit moments, but I was all of a sudden right in the midst of one.
My best friend has always stood by me.  And even today as she fought back the tears she wished me well and promised to stay in close touch.  I know she will.  I know I will.  But I still feel shit.
Goodbye my friend.  Thank you for making me the man I am today.  I love you.

  • Absence

    Wednesday, May 20, 2009 9:29PM / Members only

I've been away from AnD for a while.  Work, travel and life's little distractions have kept me at bay, and have meant I haven't had the chance to properly collect my thoughts.
While I catch up on the thoughts and musings of other members, let me post three of my recent works:
    1. Brisbane's skyline in all its majesty.  Such a relaxed town, but its skyline makes you wonder whether there's a whole heap of activity that you just can't seem to find!  I love black & whites of cityscapes.

    2. Fuzzy lights - I've seen this sort of shot done many times over, but never actually tried it.  Then I found the most perfect collection of colours.  And the slightest hint of the reflection of the lights in the water remains...  This one might make a good CD cover.  Now all I need to do is learn how to sing ;-)

    3.  And finally, what's a typical Australian night out without alcohol?!?!  The 1-degree bar is right on the Brisbane river and a great place for a quiet martini!

I'm reading a book called "The Road Less Travelled" by M. Scott Peck.  It's a classic on life, love and self-discipline.  Am loving it so far.  My only question is, given it was written over 20 years ago, howcome I only recently stumbled upon it?!?!
Quoted in the book, from The Prophet:
    ~ ++ ~

Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.
You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far.
    Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness;
For even as He loves the arrow that flies, so He loves also the bow that is stable.

    ~ ++ ~

Words originally meant to discourage parents from overly controlling their children.  But as it happens, words appropriate for most human relationships.
Why do we try to influence our friends, family and loved ones to be just like us?

  • Old things

    Saturday, Apr 25, 2009 2:15PM / Members only

A few houses along my street there's a ghost house.  Well, ok, perhaps it's not a ghost house per se, but it's old and unkempt, and frankly, scary to walk past.  The garden's overgrown and it wouldn't at all surprise me if a snake happily slithered out from behind the fence.  Nobody has lived there for years - maybe decades!
There's an old ute in the driveway of this place.  Probably dates back to the glorious '60s, when people in Australia drove cars way too big for them, that consumed too much fuel and were just down right ugly.  This particular ute is a Ford Falcon - an Australian icon.  And something about it made we want to try find a way to restore its dignity and make it look great.
I hope I've managed to accomplish that.  The ghost house still scares me.  But I'm glad it's part of my street.

Howdy - great words 'The Prophet'. your photography is good, for more powerful cityscapes, get more people in them, humanity rocks the frames you create. peace. Noel

    No, I haven't =(
But yes, everyone who comes back from HK tells me about the infectious buzz! I don't think anyone dislikes it there as of yet...
How long are you gonna be there?
  • posted on Monday, Jun 15, 2009 6:14PM  [Report]
Ah yes =) That's when 'absence makes the heart grow fonder' kicks in....and we shouldn't deny change when we can't especially if we can't pinpoint its outcome as of yet...

Day one and already enjoying heaps? That's great really...what's particularly likeable about day one in Hong Kong?

Thanks for you kind comments on my photos. I've heard the gang thing about the shoes too but I'm starting to think it may just be drunk people tossing their shoes. Way less morbid :P

Sounds like things are moving along for you. I look forward to hearing more after you've had a chance to get onto Beyond Blue. I've been quite busy but well. I finally framed your photo and it has a nice spot on my bookshelf.

u really did your homework ah on vespa vs driving a car ...if only the weather in KL is like Melbourne, i don't mind riding a vespa to work.

I'm so glad you received the photo and you're pleased with it. I just got the one from you today. The shot looks even better in person :)

I hope you will be able to secure that meeting with Beyond Blue. That will be so great!

I've been kind of busy lately and haven't had a chance to talk to my proposed "model" about the project. I will get to it soon. I did locate the model release but only have a hard copy so I need to type it in before I can send it to you.

yeah, i agree with u too that our consumerism is destroying the environment ...
but somehow my passion for old mini is so great...though i've decided to get a mini cooper but if my friend can help me find a real good condition old mini, i would still love to have it (want it in metallic red) though i'm not so much a red person and the cooper i want it in pepper white....there goes my daydreaming again ....
i like the old volkswagan van too...
currently, i'm looking for an old vespa for decor....oops , enough talking abt old stuff.

What abt u ? any plans for holiday ?
