    Description:

Since its original creation in 1870 for the Paris Opera, the wonderfully witty Coppélia has deservedly earned its reputation as one of the most popular comic ballets. Set in a village in central Europe and based on E.T.A Hoffmann's perky and light-hearted story Der Sandmann, it tells the tale of Dr Coppélius - an eccentric old inventor who fools the villagers with his creation of a beautiful mechanical doll - Coppélia.

So life-like in appearance, she attracts the amorous attention of the flirtatious Franz who breaks into her creator's house to get a closer look. In an attempt to save her lover and dupe the conniving doctor, Swanilda slips into the house pretending to be the doll in life form. The result is a frivolous scene of mistaken identity which happily ends in a joyful marriage.

Ronald Hynd's delightful choreography gives the dancers the opportunity to showcase their comic and character acting skills whilst displaying their technical aptitude in a range of complex dance styles. Léo Delibes' original blend of classical and folk music styles, with live accompaniment by Hong Kong Sinfonietta under the baton of Yip Wing-sie, further enhance this endearing and tender tale. The ballet's bright and jovial feel with Roberta Guidi di Bagno's gorgeous set and costume makes this a perfect family entertainment for all ages.
