  • The day of my birth - a painful day...for my mother, that is

    Friday, Aug 17, 2007 1:33PM / Standard Entry

August 17th.  The day of my birth.  This is the day, many years ago, that I emerged from my mother's womb kicking and screaming and covered with birthy gunk.  Everyone reacts differently on their birthdays.  For me, I tend to get really quiet and contemplative, almost going into a monk-like trance for the week leading up to 8/17.  It's a yearly ritual that I go through, taking mental notes of my life progress and reflecting upon various definitions of purpose and meaning.  Have I been more happy than not happy this past year?  Did I smile more than I frowned?  Was I a helpful and giving person more than I was a selfish butthole?  Am I doing what I am supposed to be doing?  Ahhh, so is the human condition.  Since the beginning of cognitive time, humans have gone through an infinite variation of "this".  And though we can read every book under the sun theorizing life's purpose and meaning, the reality is, we all go through our own version of it, making all sorts of mistakes and continually reinventing the wheel one life after another.  OK, enough of that monk-like jibber jabber.

I share this day in good company.  If there was no August 17th, Donnie Wahlberg would not have been born and there would not have been the "New Kids On The Block".  If there was no August 17th, Davey Crockett would not have walked the earth...and the wild animals would have reigned supreme.  If there was no August 17th, Jiang Zemin would not have existed and the big, thick, black glasses trend would never have swept the People's Republic of China or the world for that matter.

These were great people.  However, behind every great person, there was an even greater mother.  So today, I do something different.  Today, I dedicate my birthday to my mother, the one who endured a 9 hour labor due to my larger than average head and, most impressively, a 20+ year cancer survivor.  Thank you mama for squirting me out into this world.  Happy "giving birth day" to you!!!

  • Turkish Rap de Kabob

    Tuesday, Aug 14, 2007 6:20AM / Standard Entry

I have now seen it all.  Never in my wildest nightmares could I have possibly imagined the combination of hip hop, kebob, a Parisian fast food joint, and a Turkish Eminem.  But it happened and it's pretty darn hilarious.

Lest there be no culture sacred to the ghettoizing forces of the Hip Hop Nation.  I just never thought it would come in the form of a French-Turkish kebab.  Word To Your Mother...

  • How to mount an elephant

    Saturday, Aug 11, 2007 4:07AM / Standard Entry

I've always wanted to ride an elephant in the wild.  As a child I fantasized about riding atop a giant pachyderm thundering my way through the jungle chasing after rhinos, dingos, and cobras.  Had my parents not immigrated to the United States, perhaps such a dream would be my daily routine.  But then again, I do not think elephants live in Taiwan.

On a recent trip to Thailand, my dream came true...I got to mount my first elephant.  Her name was Sambun.  The following is a pictorial documentation of a boyhood dream come true.

  • I Cry...

    Saturday, Aug 11, 2007 3:25AM / Standard Entry

I am not ashamed to admit that I cry.  Much like Richard Gere, I try and cry at least once a day.  And if I have no reason to cry, I'll pluck one of my nose hairs just to get my tear ducts flowing.

Now, if you're having a bad day or just need a quick pick me up, this video will inject you with inspiration, hope, joy, and perhaps even put a smile on your face.  Oh yeah, it'll probably make you cry too, which is the most important thing to ensure a full and pure cathartic experience and healing.  But do not worry.  This video is not about furry little animals getting impaled by 6 inch stiletto heels or anything of that groody variety.

So grab some tissues first.  The last thing I want to happen is to have your computer short circuit from the massive amount of tears squirting from your eye balls.

    Cry hard.

  • An Ode to New York City

    Saturday, Aug 11, 2007 2:50AM / Standard Entry

The following poem and video is an Ode to New York City.  Inspiration from our recent trip with the FINISHING THE GAME family this past July.

    An Ode to NYC

Oh New York, New York, city of apples
You greeted us with a smile, foot mushing into dog crapples

The weather was was humid and the skies were a dark
But nothing would stop us, from running Central Park

We lived in Soho, at the Holiday Inn
The W we prefer, but the lottery we didn't win

Though people are strange, and a manhole cover blew
We've come to realize New York City, that we love you

So goodbye for now, our city debonair
We'll back in October, to continue our affair
