  • US Movie Review: "District 9"

    2009-10-31 8:00PM / 標準BLOG / USA

I went to see this monday night with a friend.  I had heard a bit of good feedback about it but I didn't really know what it was about going into it.   In my book I give a lot of credit to movies that are original and creative. this movie definitely counts in that respect.  Think Alien Nation meets the Fly crossed with the Blair Witch project...

I'm not a big fan of gross-out films, so I warn squeamish viewers to be prepared.  Visual effects are cool but from a story telling point of view, there's a few holes that you have to overlook (how did the robo suit thing and all the guns get down to the camp?)  Either way it was unique an interesting, although I can't say I really loved it.

    I'll give it a 6/10.

Can't get enough of stuff like this:

I'm afraid scorn is all these people deserve....

  • Sarah Palin, you've been Shat on!

I've been busy all last night and this afternoon preparing the voting page for the 22 bands that entered our Linkin Park Band Search Contest! (plus there's a few more stragglers I'm waiting to get info from who may make it 23 or 24!)  We're happy with the results considering the state of non-Cantopop in HK! ;-)

Voting will go up later today,  (I'll post a blog about it here too),  but in the meanwhile here's something I found online.

It sounds so much better when it comes out of Shatner's mouth.  Maybe I've been watching too much Star Trek... but it actually makes sense finally.  :-P

  • Where were you when Man landed on the Moon?

    2009-07-21 1:16AM / 標準BLOG / USA

Hopefully everyone is aware that today (July 20th, 2009) is the 40th Anniversary of the first moon landing by Apollo 11 astronauts.  Its probably well before many of us were born (myself included),  so we can't remember where we were on this momentus day....

BUT I can remember exactly where I was 20 years ago today, on the 20th anniversary of the landing.  I was in the audience here:
President George Bush speaks at the National Air and Space Museum's 20th anniversary celebration of the Apollo 11 Moon landing. Here, on July 20, 1989, Bush announced his new Space Exploration Initiative, which was to complete the space station, return man to the moon, and bring man to Mars for the first time. The plan fell apart when NASA offered an estimated budget of 500 billion over the next 20 to 30 years to achieve the President's goal. Congress balked, and NASA returned to its earlier program of primarily robotic space exploration. From left to right are NASA Administrator Admr. Richard Truly, First Lady Mrs. Barbara Bush, Neil Armstrong, President George Bush, Vice President Dan Quayle, Michael Collins, Mrs. Marilyn Quayle, and Buzz Aldrin. Much much larger version here.

I was at the Air and Space Museum in DC watching a commemoration ceremony featuring President George HW Bush and the Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Mike Collins.   (and yes, Dan Quayle!)

One of the bonuses of growing up in Washington DC is the ability to go to things like this.  I was in high school at the time, I remember clearly I took the day off from my summer internship and went downtown with my mom to see the ceremony.  We were able to get in to the public seating section and watch (from pretty close actually).

Its cool that you can find pics like this online.  Bush's speech is also available on his Presidential library website now.

ps - if this blog still exists on January 20th, 2013, I'll tell you all about my trip to watch Clinton's Inaguration celebration too.  :-P

pps - I strongly encourage you to click here for some REALLY cool pics related to Apollo 11 if you're interested History at all. :-P

  • Final USA blog - Inca Kola, OG skateboards, etc

    2009-06-06 6:00PM / 標準BLOG / USA

A few odds and ends left over from my trip back to the USA last week...

I spent quite a while looking for a new bag while I was back in the US. I left no stone unturned,  I went to REI where I bought my old bag I wanted to replace but they didn't have anything similar on sale anymore.

I tried this ridiculously large sports/outdoor goods chain store...

It turns out that Target of all places had the best selection...

Ultimately I DID find a pretty nice Eddie Bauer laptop bag that converts from a shoulder bag to backpack... as seen here a few days back.

One thing I find the most mind blowing culture shock wise is walking into a super market when I return to the US...  not just because of the types of food on sale, but the cheap prices and just hugeness open spaces of the store...  can't get this in Japan or Hong Kong easily. :-P

Aside from visiting Japanese Castles and going bicycling,   another one of my favorite pastimes is taking photos of Generic soda brands...

Its no 'Mountain Breeze' or 'America Cola'... but 'Inca Kola - the Golden Kola'  gets bonus points for going with the ethno-historical theme and changing the spelling of cola to kola.

I didn't buy it to see how it tasted. But I'm guessing its cream soda?  :-P

Speaking of Soda and Soda related products:

This particular super market also had a FULL LINE of sarcastic can coolers....    when you can't be bothered to be an annoying prick yourself,  let your Can Cooler Be Surly for You.

While I was back home visiting my parents, I went upstairs looking for some papers I left there last time.   I happened upon my brother's collection of now 'OG' skate boards...  I couldn't resist taking a pic or two:

A Steve Steadham Powell-Peralta deck and Rob Roskopp Santa Cruz...

    and in relatively mint condition:

A Mike McGill (plus a few classic stickers)  btw -   what ever happened to Gorilla Ribs?!?

    Speaking of historic pieces:

I'm guessing this 1989 vintage? Possible older. I'm afraid to actually know the answer. :-P
