  • US Movie Review: "District 9"

I went to see this monday night with a friend.  I had heard a bit of good feedback about it but I didn't really know what it was about going into it.   In my book I give a lot of credit to movies that are original and creative. this movie definitely counts in that respect.  Think Alien Nation meets the Fly crossed with the Blair Witch project...

I'm not a big fan of gross-out films, so I warn squeamish viewers to be prepared.  Visual effects are cool but from a story telling point of view, there's a few holes that you have to overlook (how did the robo suit thing and all the guns get down to the camp?)  Either way it was unique an interesting, although I can't say I really loved it.

    I'll give it a 6/10.

I've been seeing this poster all over the place, didn't really know much about the movie, the poster kept reminding me of V the mini series ad campaign.

I just figured that the commander buried the ship and some weapons too for the common defense.  Once distributed the aliens were corrupted by cat food and sold out to the Nigerians.  A better theory though is that a few shipments `fell off the truck` like Rob said.  You have to wonder how such a strong people - a massive population - became so subjugated but it has happened before.

My theory on the weapons/ robo suit thing:

When they were doing the mass exodus of the aliens down to the surface, I'm sure the government were also moving the weapons down as well. With the pull of the black market and gangsters, I'm sure they were able to get a few shipments in...

    Okay..

I've always been a fan of cyberpunkish, distopic future movies, which I always think there aren't that many of, so I try to enjoy what I can of the films released. This film is definitely creative and I'm looking forward to the sequel.

I liked it  more than you did.  It was kind of a Twilight Zone/Outer Limits type parable with way better special effects.  Obvious in its intent but modern in its execution.  The moral of the story coincides with my moral view - greed is the worst and prejudice/envy makes us do evil things.   I would give it an 8/10.
