Journalists Held in North Korea

North Korea's always in the shadows of my mind, but I am especially concerned about the two female American journalists being held hostage since March.

Here on AnD, Teddy Zee is organizing a candlelight vigil for these two. Check out his page and/or the Facebook page that's keeping people updated.

Here in the U.S., journalist Lisa Ling appeared on ABC News Nightline to talk about how hard it is to be without her sister. "She's very scared," Lisa says.

What's really heartbreaking is that the journalists were reporting on trafficking of North Korean women to China--the latest grisly consequence of China's one-child policy and North Korea's brutal treatment of its people. For more on trafficking, you should check out Pastor Eugene Cho's bold statement on his blog. It's so hard to talk about, but we all need to be aware.

The courage of these two women, speaking out on behalf of other women, is just incredible. It's really got me thinking about the risks writers take to do what they're called to do. "Who knows, but that you were born for such a time as this."

They've been sentenced to 12 years in jail. Let's pray for and work toward their release.

I really hope they'll be safely returned home soon. They deserve so much better for the work they were trying to do there.

As Roger Fan pointed out, I'm the first person from Cincinnati repping on AnD. Word! I'm a writer, connected to the Asian-American community through my Korean-born husband, our two hapa sons, and my lifelong interest in Asian cultures.

My work has appeared in periodicals, advertising, and children's curriculum, and I do a lot of writing for the web, but my dream is a career in film. I'm working on getting my first screenplay into production, and I have more ideas in the works as well. Creating good roles for Asian-American actors is something that's really important to me. I feel fortunate to give exposure to talented Asians in film by writing movie reviews for their films.

I blog for NINGIN, the Asian Media Exchange website. There you'll find the latest news and views on a variety of Asian and Asian-American artists. My interviews with Sung Kang, Roger Fan, and other fabulous people are posted at http://elena.ningin.com. When my work appears online, I might post a link to it on my AnD blog so you can check it out. But this is to add to your AnD experience, not direct traffic away from here. There's no place like AnD!
