  • Three Asian-born Pitchers Carry Dodgers to Victory

    2008-05-18 10:24AM / 標準BLOG

I have no official confirmation of this, but what happened today has got to be a Major League Baseball first. The Los Angeles Dodgers sent three pitchers to the mound today in a 6-3 victory over the Angels of Anaheim. All three were Asian-born.

The game, played in 98 degree heat, began with my favorite player Chan Ho Park starting his first game after several outstanding appearances out of the bull pen. Park pitched three scoreless innings while the Dodgers built a 4-0 lead. But two errant throws in the fourth inning forced him to pitch with runners on base for nearly a half an hour. He escaped the inning with only two runs scored, but was removed prior to the 5th inning because he’d reached his pitch limit (imposed by the coaching staff to ensure he isn’t injured pitching longer than his body is accustomed to of late).

Park, who was born in Korea, was replaced by Taiwanese born southpaw Hong-Chih Quo. Quo earned the victory with four shut-out innings, and he earned it too, turning back the Angels just when it seemed they’d grabbed the momentum.

The final inning was pitched by Japanese-born closer Takashi Saito. Saito did not earn a save because he came in with a lead of greater than four runs, but he has established himself as one of the premiere closers in baseball over the past two-plus seasons.

I listened to the game on the web (paid 18 dollars for it, too!) and I did not hear the announcers say this was some kind of Major League record, but it has got to be. I can’t think of any teams that have had three Asian-born pitchers on their roster at one time, let alone pitched all three in one game.

  • Chan Ho Park Starts for Dodgers Saturday

    2008-05-17 1:37PM / 標準BLOG

Chan Ho Park (1-0, 2.16 ERA) has been effective out of the bullpen thus far this season, so much so that he is getting his first start of the year today in Anaheim against the Los Angeles Angels. The games starts at 12:55 PST. I’ll be watching from DC.

    Scouting Report:
Dodgers: Chan Ho Park gets the nod in his continuing comeback over Hong-Chih Kuo. Park has been exclusively a long reliever this year and on four occasions has pitched three innings. Once a power pitcher, he now possesses a varied repertoire. This will be his first start for the Dodgers since 2001 and his first Major League start since April 30, 2007.

  • "Hybrid Identity Crisis" -- "Tre" DVD Release

    2008-05-12 5:21AM / 標準BLOG

A journalist named Ben Hamamoto is writing a piece about my latest film "Tre" being a first with its hapa romantic leads (Kim and Daniel), and hapa writers/director (Kim and me). This clip from the DVD bonus features is the best I have ever done explaining how mixed-race identity folds into the layers of meaning in this film and in others like "Charlotte Sometimes" and "Americanese" that deal with sex, race, and relationships. It was actually said in response to a post-screening question about the "raw" sex scenes in "Tre." I talked about "hybrid identity" and then worked my way back to answering the question.

This is one of seven chapters in the Director Q&A bonus feature on the recently released DVD, available here.

Other bonus features include a behind-the-scenes documentary by acclaimed filmmaker Reuben Aaronson, and my student film, "Kenji's Faith."

Also this is another clip from the Director Q&A feature on the DVD:

  • HUGE, Possibly Good News on Immigration Battle in Virginia

    2008-04-25 12:15AM / 標準BLOG

    Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2oiwJ-_BipU

Below is my latest 9500 Liberty video, followed by the comment I just posted on this morning's surprising Washington Post article saying one of the Supervisors is seeking to have the Immigration Resolution overturned. I'm sure deranged and inarticulate threats and insults will soon follow, but I'll be too busy editing a follow-up video featuring renowned economist Dr. Stephen Fuller, PhD.

Please watch the first of a series of YouTube videos featuring Dr. Stephen Fuller. With Dr. Fuller's impeccable credentials, I think this one will finally wake people up.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2oiwJ-_BipU

Below are the points I made this morning to the Board of Supervisors through email:

I feel very strongly that we cannot afford to pay for the expensive Probable Cause aspect of the Immigration Resolution, even if we wanted to. While it provides limited benefits, and are NO LIMITS to the legal fees our county will incur due to charges of racial profiling (especially without cameras in patrol cars), and the economic impact, while difficult to estimate in terms of dollars, Fuller said, is that we will be the handicapped county compared to our neighbors for years to come, mostly due to negative perception in the marketplace.

I support funding 287G. But my not-so-old parents and everyone else in Prince William County will be less safe if our Police Officers are burdened with the legal conundrum of Probable Cause. During a time when budget constraints bar us from attaining an officer-to-citizen ratio that compares favorably with other Virginia counties, I feel very uneasy about a policy that could potentially take an Officer off the streets each time he or she detains or questions someone not carrying an I.D.

I do sympathize with concerns about neighborhood issues. But the
Immigration Resolution has already proven to provide only temporary benefits to a small minority of residents who would prefer to have empty houses rather than neighbors who appear to be undocumented and/or indigent. I've now come to realize that even this will not be worth the cost. The vacancies and foreclosures this policy is causing will push these neighborhoods into further deterioration, devalue both residential and commercial property, reduce our tax base, and thus require more reductions in county services in coming years.

  • Did "Hate Group" Write Immigration Law in Virginia?

    2008-04-20 3:40AM / 標準BLOG

The latest 9500 Liberty video examines an important question facing the residents of Prince William County, VA -- and, really, facing all Americans: How susceptible are our local governments to infiltration by Washington DC lobbying firms like Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR)? FAIR is considered by many experts to be a hate group, so when it began to surface last year that lawyers from FAIR may have written the Immigration Resolution that created social unrest and now economic hardship in a once proud and prosperous county, many residents felt intruded upon.

    Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBbjrk0QWqw

The video was shot primarily on Dec. 14th at the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights hearing where I testified to a link between FAIR and Help Save Manassas -- an assertion that was denied by Help Save Manassas President and Black Velvet Bruce Li operator Greg Leteicq. He was so angry and insistent that I had wronged him that I notified the Civil Rights Commission that my assertion was strongly disputed and I could not corroborate it at this time.

The next day we released our first Washington Post Outlook video, which we had been working on that week. We intended our second Washington Post video to look into the question of FAIR's link to Help Save Manassas. We did not release the video, "Anchor Baby" = Hate Speech, until Jan. 4, in part because we had been waiting for an interview with Dan Stein, the President of FAIR. As you can guess from the video above, we waited all afternoon into the evening on December 19th. We tried over the next few weeks to reschedule, but Mr. Stein was fully into Republican Primary mode (supporting Tancredo first and then Romney). When we did release the "Anchor Baby" = Hate Speech, video, we avoided showing or mentioning Mr. Stein and FAIR because we were still hoping to get an interview and didn't want to anger him as we had Mr. Letiecq. Although we have yet to interview Mr. Stein, we decided to release the video today because arguments over whether FAIR was indeed the author of the Resolution have been boiling over in the town square and on the internet with the rapid success of the new PWC-based blog AntiBVBL.net.

Looking back at my testimony, I must admit it was inaccurate to say that Help Save Manassas is a "local franchise" of FAIR. I take Mr. Hethmon's word that he only became involved after the group was started and the word "franchise" does not convey as much. I apologize for my mistake.

Finally, 9500 Liberty's YouTube channel has a Playlist with more from the Civil Rights Commission hearing from which this video derives.
