  • Weddings and uni

    Monday, Feb 18, 2008 11:07PM / Members only

Called this wedding and uni because at the minute its all whats happening in my life.

My sisters wedding was on the 8th Feb and it was a fantastic day.  Everything went so well, and have loads of great photographs

While I was at the wedding, I got another invite to a friends wedding in September.  Then the next day, my older sister announced she is getting married in December.  I think she must have been planning this for a while now, but hasn't announced it because she didn't want to take any of Mary's thunder.  So I have another 2 weddings to go to.  And what is it when you go to a wedding when everyone says "oh, you'll be next!" I'll be hearing that a lot more with this next weddings and I think Oli is getting terrified

After the wedding Oli stayed up for the weekend and we had a very relaxing almost perfect weekend before I got thrown straight back into uni.  This is my final ever semester and it is now officially 94 days until the last possible day for an exam.  Don't know if I should be looking forward to it, or scared that I have so much work to do before then!!

Applying for jobs for when I leave uni, looking for jobs specifically in Dublin to get back down there again.  Got a few interviews lined up, and an offer from google!  But the catch with google is that they want me to temporarly re-locate to zurich!  Now I am so confused and don't know what to do.  She expected to hear back from me within a few days and I don't know if I will have my decision made by then.

Anyway, trying to get on with work and not pressure myself too much about that yet. Attached a few photographs from the wedding

  • My Great Weekend

Well, I have posted up an entry to the MB about my week but thought I would write it down here as well.

On Friday I was working on my final year project, I am planning to make a YouTube jukebox which is voice activated and controlled.  I started this in October/November, but most of my work was research related because I needed to hand in a report.  I did a bit of work on the coding but it was disastrous!! Couldn't get anything to work, I tried again after my exams in January and was getting nowhere; errors were appearing everywhere so I decided to do a system restore, which just made everything worse.  After a lot of freaking out, tears and tantrums on Friday I decided to undo the restores, delete everything project related from my machine and work from scratch.  Success!!!! It worked, perfectly!! The sample classes provided by Google worked a treat.  And because it is all open source code, I am allowed to copy it and use it and the university cannot say anything
I was so delighted with it, I couldn't keep my smile off my face, I went to see my lecturer today about it and he was in a great mood over it all.  He was very impressed and liked to see the progress.

Saturday was a good day too; I went into the Chinese for work and found out that Mei Mei - my ex-bosses wife - was leaving.  I was over the moon!! It may sound harsh, but working with that woman was a real chore, she was the only person ever at work to reduce me to tears and I specifically said to Tommy, my new boss, that I just couldn't work with her anymore and if I didn't get my nights changed then I would quit.  However, after getting all that sorted she has decided to quit, but for completely unrelated reasons to me.

I went into university today for my first gym session, I am trying to tone up a little and basically improve my fitness.  But on top of that, I am trying to get more balance in my life where I am not just sitting in front of a computer all day in the IT lab.  That happened to me last semester, I was doing 12 hour days in uni and became really upset and easily weepy, want to try and make my life more than just school work.  The session went well; the trainer took me through all the machines. I was great at the cardio (except cross trainer) and the lower body weights.  But I do not have any upper body strength at all.  I could barely get the weights lifted at all, but I tried my best and worked away.

I feel great for going there, apart from the fact that my arms are sore when I lift them to the keyboard!   Anyway, plan to keep up the work and have yoga classes on Thursdays so feeling great about that too.

And last but not least, I am really looking forward to my sisters wedding on Friday.  I have a gorgeous dress and shoes and cannot wait!

  • catch up

    Monday, Jan 28, 2008 10:36PM / Members only

Well, I haven't been here in four years so I guess my first blog entry should be a little catch up.

When I was last here I was 18, studying my A levels and taking driving lessons.  Well now I'm 22, finishing my degree and have passed that driving test!!! woo hoo!!! One thing that has stayed the same is that I am still working in the chinese restaurant. That's 6 years in that place now!!

I believe I have grown up soooooo much in this time.  Especially in the last year or so.  I started university when I was 18 and made so many great friends, some I want to keep in touch with forever, others I know that I won't see after we have graduated. But I have grown up and healthily accepted that.

During my first 2 years at uni it was a lot of drinking, partying and studying (in the last weeks of pressure!!) Nothing much to say there, except that I came out of my shell a little.

My third year of my course was spent in Dublin, working as an intern.  I spent a year working for AOL (please don't tell me what is wrong with your internet connection!!!), I helped develop and test the crappest social network website I have seen in a long time "AimPages".  And I don't want to be blamed!!! I tested the hell out of that thing and made sure all the developers got every little bug emailed to them, with testers like me, I am dreading becoming a developer myself

But the year down in Dublin was so much more than gaining work experience.  It was my first time living away from home and I enjoyed it soooo much.  I met new people, really started to enjoy myself and became more confident to talk out loud and voice my opinion.

It was down here when I met my boyfriend, Oliver.  We hit it off from the word go, and have been seeing eachother for almost a year now.

In June, I had to move back up home to Derry (which is 150miles away from Dublin) to complete my final year in uni.  Its been hard being back, sometimes I feel like its taking a step backwards.  I was working and living away from home, now I am back being a student and living back with my parents.   But I am trying to see it as a positive step, towards a new job and a new life again.  The work has been unbelievably hard, so many coursework assignments and deadlines!! Cannot believe it.  I have had no real social life since September and cannot see one until May, but by god will I make up for time.

I get to see Oli every few weeks for a long weekend or so, my timetable is giving my mondays and tuesdays off so when the workload is light, I can get to spend some time down in Dublin again

Well, that's brought me up to date for now, can't think of anything else I may have missed.

Very nice entry! Your Dublin experience sounds wonderful, as does Oli. :)

All these rough patches will pay off in the future. What's your dream job gonna be?
