  • MIA....Sort of...

    Monday, Jul 13, 2009 3:37AM / Standard Entry / Random

    Hellooooooo!!

I've been MIA on AnD, it's been almost two months!! I feel so guilty.... Sorry guys!!!

How is everyone? As for me, it was the season finale for the sitcom I was in, "Mr Siao's Mandarin Class" on Wednesday (Oooh you can watch it on YouTube you know! ), hosted a press conference for Acuvue last Thursday, but what really got me nutty was the week before, coz I went through some pretty interesting moments when I was shooting a short film here in Malaysia for a local director....

I had to run and twirl and play "come and catch me hee ha hee hee" with the camera  - but as silly as I felt while I was doing it, when I watched the playback I was completely blown away! It was 1000 x better than what I had in mind... It looked like something out of a really high end expensive perfume ad/sports campaign thingy (coz of the running)... Plus it was all in slow motion and my "long" hair was all windswept and flowing like a shampoo commercial....      *Ahhhhhhhhh....*
Oh, and heeehehehehehehehahaheeeeehaaaaaaa I had to slap this guy 16 times!!!!!! Heehohohohohahahahehehehehehahahahaahahahahahhahalololololololol !! Not one single slap was fake, and GEEZ, my palm and shoulder actually felt sore the next day. And the reason we had to do it 16 times was because the whole scene had to be done in one take, and one little problem meant we had to do it again. And again. And again. Till it got to take number 16. WAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!   You all must think I'm reallllllly mean for laughing like some maniacal hyena, but omg it was such a fun and amazing experience! Come on - you gotta admit that it can be quite funny. And I like to think of it like this: "The more you slap, the better you get at it" ..... WAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Seriously though, I was supposed to cry each time I slapped the dude, and then walk away sobbing, and well, I did. 16  times!   So guy get's slapped, I cry, and the next day he has a face that's half sore and a slightly sprained neck, whereas I had a sore shoulder and slightly puffy eyes. SEE? We're even. *giggle giggle*

Other than that, I've been hosting press conferences and events, and also shooting another TV drama for Malaysia. If all goes as plan, then I'll be filming a movie and another TV series from August till October... *fingers crossed*
(AND I might be coming to HK sooooooon too )

I'll be posting up some pics from our  "Mr Siao's Mandarin Class - Meet The Fans" session soon, and also some pics from the night when all of us (cast & crew) gathered together to watch the season finale.....

    I'll be back soon!

    "The Star"

    - Gags aplenty -

    ON THE AIR
    By Seto Kit Yan

Join Mr Siao’s Mandarin Class to pick up not only the language, but also a barrelful of laughter.

NTV7’S latest Chinese series Mr Siao’s Mandarin Class sure has a lot going for it, including the eye candy provided by former beauty queens, which is always welcome. And after only a few episodes, the laugh-o-meter is already hitting a high as everybody who has watched it has given it a thumbs-up.

It’s a bit like the hit Brit sitcom Mind Your Language, only our Made-in-Malaysia version tickles the funny bone with locally-flavoured punchlines and a muhibbah ensemble cast that plays a hilarious bunch with amusing names and even funnier personalities.

Having colourful characters speaking Chinese dialects like Mandarin, Cantonese, Hakka and Hokkien as well as English, Malay and Tamil, provides the multi-lingual sitcom a rich source for hilarious word play.

Kudos to director Berg Lee and producer Tan Boon Huat for a fine sitcom and the experienced actors for very well-developed and colourful personalities.

First-time director, theatre and indie enthusiast Lee definitely has a way of getting the best from his motley crew of performers.

The story goes that the owner of a multi-level marketing setup Dream Big International, buoyed by the success of his company in local markets, makes plans to expand his business to China.

Mr Siao’s Mandarin Class stars (from left) Ling Tang, Ramasundran, Zahamin Baki, Steve Yap, Auguste Kwan and Loo Aye Keng.

To prepare his agents, Robert Toh (Kee Thuan Chye) hires a Mandarin teacher to put them through an intensive Mandarin class.

He divides the eight agents into two opposing teams and appoints his two most competitive and successful agents as team leaders: tough-talking Chung Kok Keong (Loo Aye Keng) nicknamed Firey Phoenix and Hakka-speaking “Queen of Pasar” Dai Bai Sha (Ling Tang) nicknamed Great White Shark (which is actually what her name sounds like in Cantonese).

Kee’s Mr Robert has amusing lines that would have you practically falling off your seat. An example is the erroneously spouted “luo yau ren bu zhi, chu fei bu yao zuo” (which should be “ruo yau ren bu zhi, chu fei ji mo wei” – meaning “if you don’t want others to find out then you had better not do it”).

Introduced by Mr Robert as “the handsomest Mandarin teacher in Malaysia”, Auguste Kwan is as as cute as a button playing the teacher, whose Mandarin name Siao Lang sends his students into fits of laughter because it sounds like “orang gila” (mad person) in Hokkien. Mandarin class is made more fun as the teacher resorts to creative play-acting like dressing up as a circus ringmaster complete with tophat and whip in hand and as a chef.

Each episode begins with Mr Siao in a lift. It turns out that the cute guy has a phobia of being stuck in a lift due to a traumatic childhood experience.

Viewers get an idea of the extent of his phobia when he is trapped in a lift with the curt Miss Q (Miss World Malaysia 2008 first runner-up Cindy Chen), who is amusingly economical with words and declares she cannot tolerate chatty types.

Alvin Wong’s portrayal of the finicky British English-speaking Tan Tai Shan will have you rolling on the floor with laughter. Wearing the same green shirt with a variety of colourful bows, his is among the most animated of characters.

Elvanna Raine is as adorable as Cherrie Chung Chor Hung (also the name of a sexy Hong Kong actress). Her breathless speech and the coy way she peers through her luscious lashes has Hanson totally smitten and eating out of her hands.

I must say that Steve Yap has outdone himself playing Tey Eng Jun or Hanson, a Hokkien-speaking lanky baba from Bukit Mertajam. Nicknamed Handsome, the lad attends Mandarin class just to be with his dream girl.

Ever heard of Ma-Can-Lish? It’s a term coined by the Cantonese-speaking Dang Huan (Tony Ong), nicknamed Don Juan, for the tongue he speaks – a mixed-up Malaysian Cantonese English. The spiffy dresser is always seen with a scarlet ribbon tie and keeps trying to woo Cherrie.

In a case of the blind leading the blind, we have the Malay man and the Indian man correcting each other to obvious hilarious outcomes.

Shah Rukh Khan (Ramasundran) from Batu Caves loves Jacky Cheung so much he even has the singer’s hit song Wen Bie (Kiss Goodbye) on his phone. He is eager to learn but cannot differentiate between Cantonese and Mandarin.

He’ll have you in stitches with his over-enthusiastic rolling of his “Rs” as he tries to teach Amir how to count “yirr, errr, sanrr... (one, two, three ...).

Meanwhile, Amir (Baki Zainal) arms himself with an electronic dictionary which seems to help him progress faster than the rest.

Miss World Malaysia 2008 Soo Wincci plays Sophia, Toh’s wife who pretends to be the counsellor for the class to help her husband spy on the progress of the training. Of all the performers, Soo seems the least at ease, perhaps overwhelmed by so many far more experienced and talented performers. Yet, one cannot deny that she is nice to look at all the same.

The Indonesian cleaning lady named Siti (Chai Jen) is another colourful character who seems to have an agenda which we have yet to find out.

Mr Siao’s Mandarin Class airs on NTV7 at 9pm every Wednesday. If you've missed previous episodes, you can view them online -  just log on to www.ntv7.com.my

  • NIKE - Summer 2009 "Summerdelic" Collection Fashion Show!

    Sunday, Apr 26, 2009 3:05AM / Event / Work

A warm welcome to Nike's new Summer 2009 collection!

This is by far one of the most fun and craziest shows I've ever done! Everyone was so much fun to work with, it actually didn't feel like "work" at all   And here are some pics that prove my point, hehehe....

Ok, let's start from the "behind the scenes" stuff ......

Ooooooh.... An All Access Pass!!! Wheeeee ~~~ !

    AHA! We see RAISINS

I had NO IDEA how I was gonna look.....

Not that it really mattered, since I didn't have a choice anyway

    But...Wow. Pink Bubblegum? Me like...

    Viva la Retro-Pop!

Faking the innocent "deer in headlights" look...

    Now it's the "attitude" look...

Loved the pole. And...Oops! Naughty naughty me...

    Caught red handed!! Heehee....

Our improvised pole dancing stunt went quite well I think!

And my arms and legs are still sore from all that twirling too...

    We HEART NIKE!

You can totally tell that we were REALLY enjoying ourselves!

My dear friend Jin, from Hitz FM

Jin is just wayyy too lovable

Another day, another job done, and another fun experience gained! Gotta go get some rest now and loosen up my sore muscles, coz I've got a massive hair show to do tomorrow, and I'll need all the energy I can get...
(to hold up my "fashionably/designed/ornamented/wigged/exaggerated" hairstyle)

    Till then......

    <A big thank you to
Eeping for taking all these great photos, and for letting me steal them, hahaha! What would I do without you?? >

  • Ni Hao Mr Siao! & Ni Hao to the Cast!

    Monday, Apr 20, 2009 2:47AM / Press Release / TV

Ling Tang aka Shark, (whom I've nickanamed "Tang Yuan" ) is actually super super sweet, she's always laughing, making her the most adorable and usually the silliest one on set. AyeKeng plays my "che che", Phoenix. She just comes up with the funniest things at the most random moments and cracks us up big time, you won't even know what hit you!

The "Handsome" Steve Yap, your typical boy next door character, down to earth and naive. And of course, there's me! I play someone's who's sweet, dreamy, ditzy, constantly happy for no reason, and pretty much gets confused by everything. SO not like me....

    Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ygllHm_meg

Well it's obvious that I always get bullied by these two old boys.....

Literally our "class clown", Alvin Wong has the energy of a turbo-charged bunny and sometimes he's just so funny that you actually wanna strangle him... Ah Liang plays "Don Juan", a character that's so cute and annoying all at the same time...

Cindy Chen is hilarious! She plays the slightly "uptight" secretary Ms. Q, Chye is our Boss, a man who believes in his values and his dreams, never forgetting his roots, and Soo Wincci plays the mysterious Sophia...

Last but not least, my childhood idol (^.^) Auguste Kwan, is our endearing Mr Siao - passionate, sincere, loves his job and is determined to be the best Mandarin teacher ever! Auguste is without a doubt a very interesting person, his jokes can be SO lame that you end up laughing at him out of pity... Tsk tsk tsk.... Some teacher huh?
I'm just kidding - he's actually very funny & friendly, albeit in a very quirky way. Very health-conscious too, and OMG - This man CAN reallllly EAT!!! He almost broke MY record. Hmm. Not bad.....

    Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_cGCwITyqM

  • Mr Siao's Mandarin Class - Now Showing!!!

    Sunday, Apr 19, 2009 12:51PM / News / Work

So. We're finally wrapping up after almost 3 weeks of shooting

    NTV7's "Mr Siao's Mandarin Class"!

After almost 3 weeks of non-stop shooting, on an average of roughly 13 hours per day, we have finally "graduated"!

Who cares that myself and everyone else had some stupid flu the whole time? (Somehow I think I might have been the one that passed the flu to everyone else on set....Oopsie! )

      "Fooooooooood!"

Who cares that we had a bizarre food poisoning episode that pretty much incapacitated most of the cast and over half the crew for a day?

    >> No Pain, No Gain <<

As tired (and ill) as we were at times, it was all worth it in the end. Everyone on set worked so hard, day and night without complaint, even cracking silly jokes just to keep our spirits high and energy levels up. Now that's what I call true team work and real professionalism.
    You guys seriously ROCK!!!

I actually can't remember the last time I had so much fun working and laughing so hard till I cried like a moron and had stomach cramps. It's so heartwarming to see everyone bond so quickly and get along so well, totally morphing into some huge & crazy family, heehee....

It was a real honour to have the chance to work with so many talented and experienced actors. Opportunities like this don't come by everyday, and I feel tremendously blessed to be able to be a part of this production.

Thanks to all my fellow actors, I feel the utmost respect for you all & your many helpful tips and endless support, the same goes to our die-hard crew for putting up with all our nonsense, and erm.....my ditzy performance, & "wannabe" comedy stints - it was so kind of you guys to "fake-laugh" at my jokes!!    Geeeeez, the pressure !!!

Okie dokie - Time to enjoy some of the pics!

Watch "Mr Siao's Mandarin Class" on NTV7, every Wednesday at 9pm, starting from the 15th of April 2009, don't forget to tune in!
